Let's be very clear here: "Y'all" is a shortening of the phrase "you all". This is plural. No southern I have ever met would even dream of randomly replace the singular "you" with y'all. It is to be used when speaking to more than one person, i.e., the plural form of "you". I don't like it when any word is misused, but for some reason I find this one particularly grating.
