[Closed] The Race for the Crown... and other horse topics...

Triple Crown that is.

For those who may not know, the Triple Crown is three of the most challenging races in horse racing history. Only 3 year olds are allowed to run. The Triple Crown series consists of:

The Kentucky Derby: 1st Saturday in May
The Preakness: 2 Saturdays after the Derby
The Belmont: 3 Saturdays after the Preakness

This is among the greatest challenge that these young horses will face in their lifetimes. To win anyone of these races ensures their place in history books, but to win all three just about gives them legendary status. Only 11 horses have won all three races since the start of the Triple Crown. None since 1978.

The first Saturday in May is this weekend! Is anyone planning on watching? I usually only follow horse racing on the days of the Triple Crown and catch the Breeder's Cup when I remember its on in October.

Also, feel free to discuss any other type of horse related topics. :)

ooo thanks for reminding me about the triple crown! I always try to watch it every year. Were you watching that poor filly last time? I was cheering for her to win, but tis sad she got injured. :(

I'll be tuning in if I can remember this time around. *puts note on calendar*

So does anyone watch all the pre/post race stuff? Or does everyone tune in just for the race (like I do most of the time)? Just curious.

I usually end up watching it although I don't know much at all about horse racing. Although I busy this Saturday so I'll miss it... All the pre/post race stuff is kinda boring imho

I used to watch these events and went to one myself. I miss watching it on TV ever since I got rid of cable.

Hmmm...you could only get it through cable? Cause we don't have cable at home and we get it. NBC maybe? You should check your tv listings more closely. And if all fails it'll be online (I've found the races at msn.com).

So which event did you go to and how was it? I've always wanted to go the Queen's Cup Steeplechase (since it's close to where I am) but it's always been at the same time as another event.

@Edmund I find the pre/post race stuff boring too (unless they're covering something interesting that happened in the race).

I watch the stuff about the horses and the trainers, but the celebrity stuff... bleh. Skip that and bring on the race! ;)) Seeing that hats that the people are wearing is always fun though.

I always get the race on NBC. I've been watching the Derby when we didn't have cable and when we do.

Edit:

Just stumbled across this... Hope it ends up being as good as the trailer appears.

I'll often turn on the race just to watch too. All the celebrity build-up isn't really for me.

What is the policy on rain-outs? Right now the forecast for Saturday looks pretty wet.

Interesting trailer, kat. I remember Secretariat winning the Triple Crown but don't know enough of the background to tell how accurate this movie might be.

"Any other questions?"
"How much did you spend on that hat?" ;))

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

I remember seeing clips of Secretariat on TV...it seemed like he was a mile ahead of the others. What a magnificent animal! As to how it would do in theaters...eh...I don't know :( . Horse race movies, no matter how good they are, are awfully "niche" in their appeal. Other than Seabiscuit and The Black Stallion I don't know that I've ever seen any other famous/popular ones...

Based on the Wiki entry on Penny Chenery, it looks like they'll be condensing a few storylines to bring up the hype a bit in the movie, but I don't think any more so than normal for an adaptation like this.

But with the main storyline appearing to be a determined woman trying to save her family's farm, it's probably got a lot of punch when it comes to a "feel good" type story. It also appears to have similar cinematography as Seabiscuit.

As for rain outs... it takes a LOT to get a race actually rained out. I've seen races run when it is raining and when the track is nothing but absolute slop. As big of a tradition as the Derby is, I highly doubt they'll do much more then postpone the race if it pours too badly.

As for rain outs... it takes a LOT to get a race actually rained out.

The TV announcers just mentioned that the Kentucky Derby has never been rained out. But the storms currently moving through Tennessee into Kentucky - with up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain, flash flooding, tornadoes - may make for a very messy race later today.

True, but they just installed lights at the track. If they delay it for a couple of hours, they can always run it tonight. It'll make it the first Derby ever run at night, but it'll still be on Derby Day! ;))

All in all, a race to tune in for to see what's up. As I will be doing in an hour or so. :)

Aw, poor horses...that track is a sea of deep mud! Hope none slip and fall on such a sloppy track.

Edit: and none did. Yay! And it's Super Saver for the win! :) *misses riding horses*
