stwin, have you clicked on the link for the Book of Living Recipes on the right side of your header? It has a lot of the beginner crafting recipes in there.
I'm planning to farm 200 Dewthief Petals so that I can spend about 100 Dewthief Camemebert in each of the other two areas. That should put me in a good position to gather the other cheeses I will need.
Good strategy. I'm just poking my way through to see what there is to be seen.
My personal progress ...
I've also crafted up through the Dol Essence.
I have. I'm not planning on crafting any essences until I have a much bigger stockpile of the basic ones. Aleth essence is used to buy charms in all three areas (and I think in the Twisted versions as well), so I don't want to waste them crafting if I don't have to.

Something cool/interesting I just found out about the LG/new traps:
Well I've found one most definite bit of strategy regarding the essences. Apologies if this has already been posted, I'm not reading the spoilers...
Even so, you still need 729 Cynd essences to craft one Icari Essence, so it looks like we're in for the long haul if we need many of those.
And my own personal progress as of this morning....
I do have to say, I'm rather amused by all the Dune (the book) references in the Sand Dune area.
I've made it halfway to my goal of 200 Dewthief Petals. I have 104 now. I also have 24 Aleth Essences and 2 Ber Essences. I spent 20 Aleth on Sponge Charms, but so far I've only had one catch with them (thank goodness they're only consumed on catches). I figured I might as well work up to catching Thirsty mice while I'm farming.
I'm tempted to go ahead and use the 100, but I think my chances will be much better in the long run if I can make it to 200 Dewthief.
Some recipes for those who like spoilers:
1 Dol essence + 1000 charmbits + 1 divine orb = Growth charm, which seems to be used in conjunction with the Soiled Base
1 Est Essence + 1 Plant Pot = 1 Unstable Gourd, which can be poked to produce cheeses and essences (I've seen LG area cheese and some others like Limelight and OG)
Edit: More recipes have been discovered. Charm recipes:

*reads the recipes* *cries*
Holy crap those are expensive. Guess the Clockapult as a lower level trap will be coming back in vogue since you need it eventually.
Im thinking RP will be more effective since Clockapult is considerably weaker then the terrifying spider and such, me, I'm doing nothing since I'm not so active these days and will have to go to a MUN conference in Singapore which would take the whole next week
I'm in the lost dunes I guess testing out my RP, I really shouldn't have spent all that essence on the sponge charm, i could have bought a few of these grumbling charm or whatever it was called, the new traps looks nice, way are the stats?
Well, of course the RP is better than the Clock, but the point is
Anyway, I'm not pre-buying anything for the LG until after Ronza comes AND I get my 3 Warpath traps. If I still have a ton of gold by then, then I'll buy all the stuff I need.
No one knows the stats for the new traps yet because they've not been crafted; only the new base has been crafted so far.
3x Phantasmic Essence (LG GS)
Where are these sold? They are not in the LGGS[/spoiler]
At any rate, I won't be dropping any serious moolah until Ronza comes.

DiGs,
ETA: I'm now at 153 Dewthief Petals. Yesterday was a bit slower farming them because I decided to buy a round of Sponge Charms and do the "minigame" for the Living Garden. It hasn't been overwhelmingly great, but the three Thirsty Mice I've caught have made up for the Aleth Essences spent on the charms.

Somehow all the information about the Living Gardens (and I read all the spoilers ) has made me relax and calm down and not mind at all that I'm not there yet.
At my level there's still so much else to explore. As the MHWiki Commonly Asked Questions page says, "Do you consider MouseHunt a race to be won - or a place to explore?"
I raced to become a Master, because a Master is able to give back proper gifts to all his generous friends. And when I became a Master, we had just started the Halloween Event, and there were Treasure Hunts to race through, and tournaments to race through, and hardly any time at all to explore the tasks of a Master. I'm now Legendary (3 %), and I still haven't finished those tasks.
So I'm back at the Great Gnarled Tree - I quite like it, and the Mice of the Forest Guild. Perhaps I can catch enough Goldleaf mice to earn me a Bronze Crown - or yet another Curious Chemist?
When I've done all that - and perhaps gone back to Gnawnia to catch some of the mice that I missed there on the first run-through - then I can go back to Furoma and the Training Grounds, where I raced round to get what I needed to catch a Black Widow during a Treasure Hunt. Waiting for the right loot to drop will take time, and so will farming the gold that I'll need - but I find that this game is made to have you succeed, if you're not too impatient.
And in the middle of all that there will be a new event, and more racing again ...

... or a place to explore?"
This has been my experience with the game. Explains some of willingness to stay put in one area for a long time like the King's Gauntlet. Nice to go back to some areas and not get beaten to death by the moose due to having stronger traps.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
I guess in a way mouse hunt is a place to explore but has like competitiveness in exploring, like me and my real life friends who play mh we race to see who can finish an area first, however exploring back to previous places is still fun, although the most explored places for me r probably furoma where u farm in lots of gold
Ummm...i figured u get more of that petal from the shadow place then from the water place, I'm getting a lot more of it there at least, which ones do we need for the changing place cheese? I realy don't know
I suppose some of the great success of MouseHunt comes from the fact that it's providing both - basically it might be about patience and exploring, but it also gives great opportunities for competition, if that is what a hunter wants.
The tournaments are definitely competitions - and you can make your own competition with your friends, as you say - and you can just try to climb on the points scoreboards (I'm now 185 643rd on the list ).
My long-term ambition is to catch every mouse at least once, and to get Silver Crowns for the pretty ones (my favorite catch so far has been the Goldleaf, and I hope at least to get a Bronze Crown for it). There will be lots to explore.
I just caught the Magic mouse, after having hunted for it for a while, and I'm now hunting for the Abominable Snow Mouse. When I can craft some more Limelight cheese, I'll go for more of the Digby Dirt Dwellers - another Mouse Group that I really like.
Then eventually I'll go to Furoma - and if it's good for farming gold, I should be able to buy stronger traps!
I guess I could even go to the King's Gauntlet - the first tiers are open to my rank ...

The Mousoleum and Catacombs are MUCH better. . . you might look into those before too long.
