1995 - The DVD is invented, marking the end-times for VHS tapes everywhere. And we haven't looked back once. "Look ma, no rewinding."

we used videos to like 2002, when we finally got a dvd player because for most movies they were makign them on video anymore.

I grew up largely in the 90’s. I started my second year of kindergarten in 1990.
The most important thing that happened in the 90’s was that the BBC’s Silver Chair aired in 1990. (Okay so maybe I exaggerate a little but it was very important ;)) ).

As for cartoons, remember Animaniacs, Dark Wing Duck, Tail Spin, or even Boonkers?

I remembering hearing about those shows. Tail Spin was the only one of them I actually watched. I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was big too, but I didn’t watch that either. One of our favorite shows to watch was Ghostwriter (a kid's show but not a cartoon).

Who rememebers dial-up internet being the standard? I do. I never really got onto a lot of sites back then, but a lot of it has to do with slow internet.

I remember that. My sister and used to try to go to the Beanie Baby site, but it had trouble loading. I didn’t spend much time on the internet then either.

The two events I remember best from the 90s are the Oklahoma City bombing and Princess Diana's death. I was only 6 and 8 years old, respectively, but images from those news reports still stick in my mind.

I vaguely remember Princess Diana’s death, but I too still remember an image from the Oklahoma City bombing.

I was CRAZY about Beanie Babies. I collected them, but I didn't "collect" them. That is to say, I always took the tags off (saved them tho) and actually played with them instead of sticking them on a shelf.

I wasn’t crazy about them, but I collected them in the same way you did. ;)) I saved most of the tags, but I might have gotten rid of a few. When I first got them I didn’t realize the importance of the tag. I remember my cousin looking at me like I was crazy because I said I had to take the tag off to free its ear (I think my first one was Bones the dog but I’m not sure). My cousin is a few months younger than I am but has always acted older / superior. 8-| Speaking of tags, I should probably remove the one from Aslan’s ear. I bet it isn’t very comfortable. (Yes, I know I’m weird. :p ). Beanie Babies were really popular among my classmates when I was in 6th grade. They brought them to school to play with during indoor recess. The boys and the girls played together and at one point were arranging a wedding and wanted our teacher to take pictures to send to Ty.

I also remember the y2k scare, but I thought people were being a bit silly about it.

As for books, the Baby-sitters Club was popular. The series started in the late 80s but most of the books were written in the 90s. The TV series and the movie came out in the 1990s too. The movie was one of the first PG movies I watched. Goosebumps were popular, but I did not read any of those. I strongly dislike horror. x_x The Saddle Club books were also from this time frame. It started in the late 80’s but most of the books were published in the 90s. (Actually both The Baby-sitters Club and The Saddle Club started in 1986, but The Saddle Club lasted one year longer (2001)).

During the time we lived in Pennsylvania (Aug 1992- June 1996), there were two huge blizzards. That was unusual weather for that area (near Gettysburg) and since two other places my parents had lived had more snow than normal, we joke that they bring it with them wherever they go. (They both grew up in Minnesota).

I was a teenager during nearly the entire 90s.

Nowadays when watching TV shows from the 90s- especially those spanning several years- it is amazing how I recognize the fashions and hairstyles as being very 90s!

Some people see the 90s as an age of innocence- even though it would never compare to the 80s innocence and prosperity-wise. Why? Because of something that happened in the early part of the new millennium.

I don't remember alot about the 90's, because I was only seven when they ended, but I remember being very impressed when my sister and brother played Pogs. I always took them and my sister got really mad at me.

I didn't like the cardboard pogs. Those were boring. But the metal pogs! Those were cool! Pogs had cool pictures on them, which is why I liked them so much. And probably because they were forbidden, too. We still have them in an orange canister in our basement, and, I'm not ashamed to admit, use the metal ones as paperweights from time to time.

I went to see The Phantom Menace in theatres when it came out. I remember being terrified of Darth Maul. (My mom almost wouldn't let me go; I was only six or so.) For years afterwards I had horrible visions of Darth Maul peeking in my bedroom window as I got ready for bed. It was basically my worst nightmare.

I thought that Qui Gon Jinn was great, though, and I

Spoiler
cried when he died.
I'm pretty sure I was in my dad's lap for the whole time at the movie theatre.

Anything else? Not that I remember...

There was plenty of ugliness in the 90's, trust me. There was the 93 WTC bombing...the terrorists planted explosives in the parking deck at the base of the World Trade Center. It did some damage as I recall but didn't bring it down. There's also the aforementioned Oklahoma City bombing, domestic terrorism at its worst. But we (the US) still didn't really take terrorism that seriously until early on in the next decade, that's for sure.

There's also 90210...true evil =)) . Remember how many guys started growing their sideburns out like Jason Priestly and Luke Perry back then? Whatever happened to those guys anyways?

...and since two other places my parents had lived had more snow than normal, we joke that they bring it with them wherever they go. (They both grew up in Minnesota).

That reminds me...February 1996 brought a memorable cold spell: over a week with low temperatures below -25F/-32C, and one night where the Twin Cities tied its modern-day low record of -32F/-36C (not to mention wind chills a lot lower! ;)) ). We have an old home video of us celebrating a return to daytime highs of -10F/-23C with a bonfire in the driveway.

That week also saw a new state low temperature record, -60F/-51C, in the small town of Tower in northeast Minnesota (another nearby town, Embarrass, which competes with them for low-temp bragging rights, lost their shot at the record when the thermometer broke at -45F/-43C the same night. The local weather guy was disappointed).

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

I'm glad I don't remember that. :p

Haha, I remember those! I didn't read them, but not because I didn't want to...the Parents wouldn't let me. :P All my friends had them though, and I thought they must be Exremely Scary books, I half wanted to read them, but also half didn't want to.

Anyone remember the Land Before Time movie? (I think that's what it was called). Not sure if that came out in the 90's, but I remember watching it when I was about 4. SCARIEST MOVIE EVER. =)) I can't remember any of the film, but I can still remember the nightmares I had constantly about it!

I remember Goosebumps. The covers were so freaky looking, but the stories never quite lived up to them. I read about ten or fifteen before getting bored with them because they all had the exact same plot structure. ;))

I have a ton of Beanie Babies. I got all of the ones McDonalds released and a few of the big ones.

One of the most memorable events weather-wise for me was our ice storm in January of 1997. The trees were coated with ice and we lost power for days. I managed to get a cold from staying outside too long the first day and spent the whole thing miserable. We had some of the weirdest dinners during the aftermath. The first time I ever had jelly on toast. ;))

Not that I live there, but I remember my relatives telling us all about it.

Oh yeah, Goosebumps. Never read them, but was always intrigued/creeped out at the covers. x_x It was only recently that I watched some of the Goosebumps TV show (I think CartoonNetwork was showing it around Halloween or something) and found them pathetically goofy instead of scary. The book covers are worse than the stories! =))

@ Val. Land Before Time came out in 1988. :) I too watched that movie when I was little during my dinosaur phase. Everything I talked about/watched/read (or had Mom read to me) was about dinosaurs. ;)) don't remember much about my impressions about the film, except that I cried during

Spoiler
the scene of Littlefoots mom dying. :((

On a similar note, does anyone remember An American Tail: Fieval Goes West or Jumanji? Those were two of my favorite films to watch whenever they came on TV. I still think they're good, fun movies. :)

I liked Fievel Goes West - maybe even better than the original. After all, it had Jimmy Stewart and the Blue Brothers' version of the Rawhide theme. ;)

I remember the night in 1994 when my car appeared on the local TV news - but I didn't. ;))

I'd finally saved up enough money to buy a newer, more-reliable car than the 'beaters' I'd been driving up until that point, so in the spring of 1994 I got a 2-year old Accord.

That summer - less than 2 months later - I was visiting friends in Minneapolis when a huge oak tree in the neighbor's yard collapsed from old age, crushing my car and blocking the residential street where I'd parked. (It also hit a city bus, which is probably why it was newsworthy. Fortunately it was a Saturday night and the bus was nearly empty; no one was seriously injured).

City crews came to remove the tree - it was on a major, 4-lane road - but I didn't get my car towed right away. When I talked to my insurance company to arrange a tow and claim, she said, "Oh, that's the one I saw on the news!" I didn't actually see that news broadcast, as I was a little shook up by my near-encounter with death. I couldn't help realizing that had the timing been just a little different, I could have been in the car when it was hit. It was quite an eye-opener!

The irony is that people sometimes ask if I'm worried about trees falling on me or my tent or car when I'm out camping. Now I just reply, "No, I go to Minneapolis for that." ;))

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

My, that is a story right there! I'm assuming insurance paid your car off and you were able to purchase another relatively new one, yes? ;))

I remember Goosebumps. The covers were so freaky looking, but the stories never quite lived up to them. I read about ten or fifteen before getting bored with them because they all had the exact same plot structure.

My niece had a stack of those books that was taller than her. It seemed like there were a million of them or something, and she was always reading them. The covers tended to be on the grotesque and/or eerie side but I'm told the books' innards didn't live up to the image on the front most of the time (sort of like Hardy Boys books). I think they even had a TV show based on them, but I honestly can't remember.
