Can't wait for Thanksgiving! Such a wonderful, family-oriented holiday, filled with tradition. Turkey, stuffing, the Macy parade... I can't wait! Less than a week now!
My family celebrates in the traditional way: an early supper of turkey, mash potatoes, jellied cranberry sauce, corn, stuffing, and afterward all sorts of lovely pies: chocolate, banana cream, Key Lime, and of course Pumpkin Pie with a dollop of whipped cream. Mmm! Then many, many lunches on the days following of Turkey sandwiches and "Thanksgiving Mash" (basically turkey, gravy, stuffing and mash potatoes all mixed up together. Sounds weird, but it's good.) Also, at the dinner table, we each list things we're thankful for, and thank the Lord for all that's happened in the past year.
I'm thankful for so much, I don't think I can post it all. But I'll do a summary (first few may seem like stock answers, but they're important!)
* God's Creation
* God's Redemption through His Son Jesus Christ
* God's power in my life
* God's love
* God's Word
* Family and friends
* My health
* My home
* My Nation, and our liberty
* Good books (like Narnia)
* Good movies (also like Narnia )
* Narniaweb
* Turkey!
* Mash Potatoes!
* Fun times
and much more.

We don't celebrate thanks giving her in Australia. Well 90% to 95% of us don't. I am part of that 90% to 95%. Semms simlair to christmas execot you say thanks you to stuff and don't give out presents.(usually).
Haha that's pretty much it! Christmas but with no presents . It's just another excuse to stuff our faces with pie and turkey .
In addition to our "Thankful-for" jar, my favorite Thanksgiving traditions are baking pies and taking walks as family after we enjoy our "feast".
Wow...usually I have just enough energy to walk to the couch for a nice 2 hour nap.
Well, we have a bit of an ulterior motive - the walk leaves more room for pie. We do lunch at noon-ish and have dessert later in the afternoon so we can consume, I mean, enjoy more sweets.
Continuing my sister's and my lists:

Ilovefauns: you all in Australia are probably smarter than the rest of us because you have cut out at least one holiday where one gets stuffed from eating too much !
as much as I like Thanksgiving, I ahave to agree with TheGeneral: it's really just another excuse to eat! lol!

Aww, come on, guys! It's not just about the turkey - it's about our heritage. Why, Thanksgiving is more American than apple pie. True, the food plays a large role, as it does it the majority of our holiday celebrations, but it's also a day for worshiping and praising our Lord for His many blessings in our lives and a time to remember the struggles and trials that our ancestors (the Puritans in particular) overcame. *steps daintly off soapbox*
Here's the next piece of my list. My theme today is people, but since I can't post the names of my friends and family, this one is mostly authors.
I'm thankful for...

What a great thread. I am thankful for the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family again this year. I am thankful that everyone is in good health and that everyone is having good fortune this year. Although, I do think there is one silly event that does take place with thanksgiving. Here is the link...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 03809.html
What do you think?
Yeah, that's pretty lame . What a waste of money. We raised turkeys one year and let me tell you, they are not worth that fuss!
I am thankful that we did not get the swine flu. But the trick would be being thankful if we did.
The Bible says to "give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (I Thes. 5:18). We've all been listing good things that we are thankful for, and that's great. It's wonderful to be conscious of all the ways we have been blessed. But what about giving thanks for the car breaking down last week and costing us way more money than we had to budget for it? What about thanking God for being ill, or being persecuted, or locking your keys in the car?
All of these adverse circumstances are opportunities for us to love God more than we love ourselves. So I'm going to put this into practice...
Thank You, Lord, that our old home has not sold yet. Thank You for providing the jobs we have that pay enough that we can handle two mortgages for the time being. Thank You that we have had a whole year of this to learn about Your amazing provision. Thank You for being faithful, for having a plan, and for allowing us to grow in this area by stretching us. Thank You for always comforting us with Your Word.
Thank You, Lord, for my unsaved family members who continually reject You. Thank You that their rejection of You is not my fault, that You are sovereign and when I pray for their salvation, I know that You are powerful enough to enact it, and wise beyond my imagination. Thank You for allowing me to be a witness to them. Thank You for your sovereign plan.
Thank You, Lord, for the opposition that Christians must deal with in this world. It seems that the Bible is laughed at and despised everywhere, and people don't hesitate to put down those who follow it. God, I thank You for the distress this has caused me. Thank You for how Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Thank You that You always receive the glory, even if I fail.
...
What difficult things are you thankful for?
"It is God who gives happiness; for he is the true wealth of men's souls." — Augustine
One more day till Thanksgiving! Woot!
wisewoman, that was really inspiring. It's hard to remember to thank God for all things, even in situations which seem bad, but God promises that all things work together for good for those who love Him.
Speaking of bad situations (although this is just a little inconvenience), has anyone else found themselves at a loss for pumpkin pie filling this year? Apparently there's a nationwide shortage (too much rain in the northwest, or something). I spent hours today with my sister, running from store to store trying to find some pumpkin pie filling. All of them had little notices about the shortage... I guess that's what we get for waiting so late . Anyway, we did eventually find some, so I'm thankful for that! It's amazing how many things we take for granted every day; when something you expect to have ends up unattainable, you realize how important it is to be thankful for the things you do have.

Interesting perspective, ww. Thanks.
Lord, I'm thankful for the family members who've rejected You. I'm also thankful for the opportunities to witness to and pray for them.
Lord, I'm thankful for the times my car wouldn't start and for the car crash a few months ago, and that in the midst of that pain You took care of me and provided a solution.
Lord, I'm thankful for the current computer problem. I'm also thankful for the knowledge that You'll provide a solution.
Lord, I'm thankful for allowing me to wake up every morning, to see a new day, whether it turns out good or bad, because I know no matter what happens You're in control.
Lord, I'm thankful for Your wisdom and knowledge, for Your Holy Spirit and Your Word, for being disciplined by it, and for giving me the grace and maturity to say "I'm sorry" when I hurt people.
Check out my blog post "Thank You, Lord!"
Just tonight and then it's Thanksgiving. I made cool pumpkin pie tonight, so it's ready for tomorrow. Still have to make a berry pie and a pecan pie.

KJane, you gave me my laugh for the evening! That turkey article reads like a poor piece of fan fiction. I don't know why that has to be one of our nation's traditions...it's a little embarrassing!
Good thought, WW. I like your list. Unfortunately, I can't post that kind of information on the web - mine would reveal a lot of details - so I'll stick to the good stuff. We're working on cultivating an "attitude of gratitude" around here, as my parents like to say. And as the preacher said last Sunday, a key trait of the truly humble is their gratefulness for all things. If that's true, our house is pretty humble tonight.
Thanks, Sis.
Hmm, do I dare post that we are NOT having turkey tomorrow? In addition to the pies SA listed, we are forgoing the turkey for brisket (simpler cleanup, which we dearly need this year!). However, we're still having rolls and mashed potatoes, as well as green beans, homemade applesauce, and maybe a fruit salad. Yum, yummy! Can't wait for our lovely lunch, and not just for the food. We get to use Mom's good china and cloth napkins and decorate the table and dress up for pictures. Why, it's almost as good as tea party!
My theme for the moment is girly stuff.
I'm thankful for...
~Aprons
~Dresses
~Skirts
~Makeup
~Cute shoes
~Handbags
~Hair things (headbands, scrunchies, sparkly clips...the whole nine yards)
~Narnia Style Day (because I need excuses to play dress up!)
~Tea parties
~Shopping with Mom (I'd add my sisters, but they hate to shop )
And the very ordinary things which I am blessed to have.
I'm thankful for...
~Braces (and even more thankful to have them off!)
~Retainers (to keep the braces' work in place)
~Batteries
~Soap (all the different types...for hands, dishes, etc)
~Eyeglasses
~Label maker
~Comfortable furniture
~Lamps
~Dishwasher
~Hot water heater

Phew! Good thing, it CAN'T be thanksgiving without pumpkin pie. I never heard there was a shortage, but this afternoon I saw a pumpkin pie in our fridge, so my mom got some. I swear I won't ever move out cause I like my mom's food too much.
A tradition I forgot to mention, I always watch the movie 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' this time of year.
