Oh, I love this movie. Definitely my favorite Disney princess movie. I love Pascal. He's so cute!
Also, some of Flynn's lines are hilarious:
You broke my smolder
The glory of God is man fully alive--St. Iraneus
Salvation is a fire in the midnight of the soul-Switchfoot
Disney's focus in Tangled, I've read, was meant to tell the story from the viewpoint of the "prince" more than the princess-- or at least, not to leave the "prince" unknown in the background while the princess's story is told.
I think it makes for a better story, which is why I enjoyed the film so much. The songs weren't very memorable, but I liked them while they were going. The way that Rapunzel changed from being so happy to be free to really guilty and back again was done very well. I liked that part a lot.
The art was beautiful as well. I read that it was meant to look like oil paintings, and I think that's believable.
"Let the music cast its spell,
give the atmosphere a chance.
Simply follow where I lead;
let me teach you how to dance."
I wasn't sure, back when the very first trailers came out, how much I'd like this movie. But I was pleasantly surprised!
I think my favorite scene is the one with Rapunzel and Flynn out in the boat, watching all the Chinese lanterns launched. Very nice!
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
I just watched Tangled for the first time tonight.
I both loved and hated it. I loved all the parts involving Flynn and Repunzel. Other parts were a bit cheesy to me. I wasn't really a fan of the random burts into song back when they were used in classic Disney movies, and I'm even less of a fan of them today. Especially when they go over the top. Like when someone is alone, and they start singing a big musical number, and randomly, out of nowhere, appears an orchestra and grand staircase, and a spotlight. Just a little too much.
But the whole Flynn/Rapunzel story was very sweet. The whole "Scalliwag guy who thinks he's all that meets girl who doesn't fall for his charm, but they end up falling in love anyway" scenario has been way over done. I always hate when people go for that in stories. But I think the humor of Flynn Rider saved it this time. Plus the fact that Rapunzel was very sweet and small. (Usually, in most movies I see with that cliche scenrio, the girl ends up being this tough girl who wants as much respect as guys, etc., and so she's some kind of match for his ego.) So that made it a bit more fresh.
I liked the song she sings to light up her hair. The rest of the songs were pretty forgettable.
Enjoyable movie. I'd buy it; something I don't say about very many stories.
I wonder how close it is to the original Rapunzel story... I've seen so many different versions of the fairy tale, I don't even know what the original one is like.

The original Rapunzel tale goes something like this (although since there are so many variations it can be hard to figure out which came first):
Once upon a time there was a man (who is either a carpenter or a baker, I forget which. Anyway, he's poor) and his wife became pregnant. Now, they lived next door to a witch with a garden surrounded by a high wall. The wife would look out her window into the garden and see the plants growing there--one of which was rapunzel. The wife craved the rapunzel to the point where she became ill and told her husband to get her some or she would die. So the husband climbed the wall and picked a bunch of rapunzel for his wife. But the witch caught him. To pay for his thievery, the man had to promise to give the child to the witch after she was born. When he returns to his wife, she doesn't care about the witch, she just eats the rapunzel.
Months later a little girl is born. The witch comes to take her away and though the man and his wife beg and plead with her she holds them to the bargain. The witch names the girl Rapunzel after the plant and takes the little girl far away.
On Rapunzel's twelfth birthday, the witch takes her to a tower with no doors and only one window, but the tower is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside so Rapunzel lives quite well. And then we have the whole "let down your hair" blah, blah, blah...she sings so beautifully that a prince climbs up to see her...here's the part I like: the prince likes Rapunzel so much that the next day he brings a priest with him to the tower and has the priest marry them.
Months go by again and Rapunzel (being the naive girl she is) asks the witch to loosen her dress since it's too tight around the middle. From that one comment, the witch somehow figures out that a man had been in the tower and that Rapunzel was pregnant. In a rage she cuts off the hair, Rapunzel is sent away...the prince comes that night, the witch uses Rapunzel's hair to let him up and then she pushes him out. He falls and injures his eyes (I think he falls on a briar patch or something like that).
Rapunzel is living in the desert and gives birth to twins. The prince wanders around and hears her singing. They find each other and two of Rapunzel's tears fall into his eyes and cure them. And then they go away to some kingdom or other and live happily ever after.
As you can see, Tangled isn't much like the original tale, but I really liked how they interwove some elements into the story (like her tears and singing). I love that movie. After seeing the trailers I wanted to skip it, but my sister convinced me to go see it. I was pleasantly surprised. The dialogue was funny, the characters were cool, and I liked the soundtrack.
this movie is hilarious
when I first saw the trailer in front of "Toy Story 3" I honestly thought it would be lame. I seriously still think the trailer is lame but I was totally surprised and delighted at how funny and well done this movie is
sweeet: I thought it made it even more exciting because they did have more of the prince's side of the story I love Flynn's story and the fact that he narrates the movie I agree with you about all of that

Which does everyone prefer: Pascal or Maximus?
Also I had a question, what does Flynn Rider say after Rapunzel corrects him that Pascal is a chameleon, not a frog? He says something, and I couldn't quite make it out.
Thank you, Dot, for the original Rapunzel tale.

ithy: that's a hard one I love Maximus and Pascal almost equally
and about what Flynn said - I couldn't quite make it out either
I love this conversation:
Rapunzel: "So, Flynn Rider, whatever brought you here, call it fate, destiny-"
Flynn: "A horse."

He says, "Nuance."
I first saw the concept art for the tower back before the film was called Tangled. It was gorgeous and reminded me of art from Beauty and the Beast so I was interested to see how Rapunzel would turn out. And then all the changes happened and I was less enchanted with the idea.
I didn't see the film up until a few months ago and any doubts I originally had were erased. It was cute, funny, beautifully animated and had great music.
"Mother Knows Best" would be my least favorite song (it's somewhat grating) but "I See the Light" is beautiful and "I've Got a Dream" is really catchy and amusing. "Kingdom Dance" is my favorite score track. Alan Menken did an amazing job.
Flynn wasn't your typical Disney prince and Rapunzel wasn't your typical Disney princess, which was a twist I appreciated. Most of the Disney princes get away with all kind of things (trespassing, stalking, etc. ) but not Flynn. Rapunzel's frying pan has got to be my favorite weapon ever.
I first watched Tangled on my birthday. As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I wanted to see this movie. My only regret is that I didn't see it in the theaters.
My friends all saw it, and they all told me that I would love it. So I started watching it with high expectations - and I was not disappointed.
The music was perfect, although like Kate, my least favorite song was Mother Knows Best. My favorites would have to be I See The Light - that's such a gorgeous song. I also am in love with the Kingdom Dance scene.
Maximus reminded me so much of a dog and Pascal was perfect. A lot of times, I get annoyed with talking animals in princess movies, but I didn't in this one. I actually liked it that they didn't talk, because the filmmakers did a great job making us endeared to the characters without adding dialogue.
The plot was so fascinating and I didn't get bored. At all. Every time I thought I knew where it was going, another plot twist would present itself. I really appreciated that.
My favorite scenes were the closet scene and the "BEST DAY EVER!" scene. They make me laugh every single time. Also, I loved the Kingdom Dance scene and the ending. So beautiful!
And lastly, my favorite part:
Flynn wasn't your typical Disney prince and Rapunzel wasn't your typical Disney princess, which was a twist I appreciated. Most of the Disney princes get away with all kind of things (trespassing, stalking, etc. ) but not Flynn. Rapunzel's frying pan has got to be my favorite weapon ever.
Ditto. What else can you say? Flynn is my favorite prince, and same with Rapunzel. Honestly, the only problem I have with Disney princess movies is that they tend to be the same. The characters seem to lack depth, especially the princes. Not Flynn. He wasn't flat. He was vivid, alive, and interesting, and I liked him a LOT. Rapunzel was also amazing and she reminds me a lot of myself... but that's another story.
And you all know how I feel about frying pans.
(Fun fact: After watching Tangled, I killed a centipede with a frying pan. More on that here. )

This has to be, after long consideration, my favorite animated movie. I think it passes by far all the other disney movies I've seen, and even the pixar one's. First of all, it makes me cry a lot, and I love all movies that make me do that. Secondly, it's unbelievably sweet. Nothing corny or overdone about it, full of good humor, but not too much. I love all the music, and I'm still singing the songs. And now my sister owns it . . . so I can watch it WHENEVER I WANT!!!! JOY!
As for your story, Mountie - inspirational!!!!!

My friend and I were talking about the death of Mother Gothel. I thought it was the fall from the tower that killed her. My friend thought it was the spell from the hair wearing off, causing her to age and turn into dust; and that the fall from the tower just caused the dust to separate.
What do you guys think? Does the movie really make it clear which one it is?
~Riella
Wow - I never thought of the spell wearing off, but that makes perfect sense. She just kept getting older and older, till she turned into dust. I always just assumed it was the fall. I'm not very smart.
