Hi guys - so, did we enjoy?
This was never gonna be a favourite episode of mine, I have an aversion to focusing for too long on anything Kate-related. It wasn't half bad though.
How about Claire going all crazy at the end though? I don't know what I thought had happened to her - but I never thought about the craziness taking over and her going all Roussou on us, pretty terrific though. Can't wait for the Jack/Claire brother/sister reveal.
Bring on next week (and some answers? Pretty please? )
I won't read your posts just yet, as I don't want to be influenced by other peoples' observations for now.
Wow! What an amazing Season 6 premiere. It was such a long wait but we made it. I was blown away by these two episodes. They were character-heavy and mythology-heavy. They gave us some answers to our questions without making it seem like they were ticking off a check-list. In true LOST fashion we were left with more questions.

Excellent summary, Warrior!
A few additional observations on "What Kate Does," courtesy of a real-life friend who provides what she likes to call "Lost gossip" culled from blogs and various internet sites:
The date on Claire's ultrasound is October 22, 2004, one month after the date of the original crash. She doesn't have the option of giving up Aaron to the intended adoptive parents. Kate helps her with the baby, though in a different way than in the original history. Ethan shows up, seeming to care about her and the baby. Maybe it's an act for his own purposes, yet while he had no problem poking her with all sorts of needles when the Others abducted her, this time he doesn't want to do so.
And Kate's history means she's running away all the time. But in this episode she helps Claire rather than running from her. Some have speculated that alternate-Kate might even be innocent of the murder seen in flashback in "What Kate Did" - as she says she's "wanted for murder" and asking Claire, "Would you believe me if I said I was innocent?” [This seems like a bit of a stretch to me].
Trivia: The stuffed orca that Claire was carrying for Aaron was the same stuffed animal Aaron had when he was living with Jack and Kate off the Island.
On the island, it seems Claire is setting those Rousseau-like traps (both women lost their babies). She shot those 2 Others to help our heroes. But Dogen hinted that she, along with Sayid, have been claimed by a darkness.
Perhaps that darkness is somehow related to the "infection" Danielle Rousseau talked about early in the series? Maybe that crazy French woman was right after all.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

I'm really annoyed that I can't discuss the episode with you guys (it's all said and done by the time I've seen it). Not your fault of course.
Paul Scheer, the comedian from Comic-Con (of Damon, Carlton and a Polar Bear fame) has this to share with us:
According to Damon and Carlton:
Take the word “Johnny”
add 2 vowels
and
three consonants
= an an anagram that works out to be a very big clue as to the Man In Black’s identity. Here’s the catch: it’s in a foreign language.
I'm not any good at these sort of things. Anyone wish to have a go and working out the MIB's identity?
Here are some more thoughts in regards to LA X.

That anagram clip is pretty amusing (thanks for linking it!) but I'm not up to trying to solve it.
On "LA X" -
"What Kate Does" -
To tell the truth, when Dogen was playing with that baseball it reminded me of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in which Commander Sisko always had a baseball on his desk and sometimes played with it in similar fashion.
Lostpedia notes that a baseball has 108 double-stitches, thus tying it into the Numbers.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
I think you might be right about Locke being the only one who saw it as a beautiful white light.
Ooh - this theory develops my theory further, going on to deduct where it/they came from.
I'm liking this one a lot!

That's a very well-thought-out theory! Now to see how it all plays out.
(Note that the clip linked above has season 5 spoilers).
All this speculation - both here and with real-life friends - is a lot of fun. So what will we talk about after the series ends? I'm reminded of the days when the original Star Wars movies came out. It may be hard to relate to now, with the whole story being known, but when Empire first came out, people discussed it like we are here (though there was no Internet, and there were no DVDs or even VHS copies of the movies available; we had to go on what we remembered while in the cinema).
Things that are obvious now weren't so clear then, and everyone was asking, Is Vader really Luke's father? Who's the other Skywalker? and so on. And we had to wait years for those answers, for Return of the Jedi to hit theaters.
Strange as it may sound, it was a sort of magical time that in hindsight was pretty short-lived - as this one will be too, as the time is quickly coming when we'll (hopefully!) have the answers to these questions, and all the pieces will fit together.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Yeah, LOST really is this generations Star Wars, at least the equivalent on TV.
SPOILERS AHEAD for those who haven't seen to the end of Season 5.
Does Season 3 foreshadow elements of Season 5 and beyond?
I was reading parts of The Brig (Season 3, episode 19) transcript on LostPedia: http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Brig_transcript and I'm finding the situation with Sawyer, Locke and Anthony Cooper to be remarkably similar to the situation with Jacob, Ben and Locke in the foot of the statue in The Incident Part 2 (Season 5, episode 17). http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Inc ... transcript
In The Brig, Locke can't kill Cooper (who has been captured by The Others to deal with) because the horrible man is still his father (or is it more? - a rule he has to live by?) Richard tells to get Sawyer to kill Cooper for him. This is very similar and yet very different to the scene with Jacob, Ben and Locke. Cooper is in Jacob's role but Cooper is restrained and Jacob came willingly. Cooper manipulates Sawyer, while Jacob seems to feel sorry for Ben. Locke manipulates Sawyer for his own ends but discovers something that will drive him to choose to kill him by his own choosing. The MIB as Locke manipulates Ben to kill Jacob. Either way Locke and MIB can't kill their adversary directly, they must do it through another. Sawyer is the loophole in The Brig, Ben is the loophole in The Incident. I don't know if it means anything but the two scenes mirror each other quite well. Maybe it's as simple or as complex as Locke being so weak as to not being able to kill his personal demons (Cooper etc.) and so he pays for it by being consumed and overcome by said demon? - the MIB?
What say you? Am I maybe onto something or a complete nutter?
Season 6 - LA X: More than one Smokey?
Currently watching:
Doctor Who - Season 11
When I was watching the latest episode of Lost, “What Kate Does”
1. He blows Ash over Sayid
2. He Electrocutes Sayid
3. He Burns Sayid
The Three things that Smoky hate are:
1. Ash: Smoky obviously hates ash and ash is used as a defense against him.
2. Electricity: In season three when Juliet pretends to be handcuffed to Kate, she runs behind the Others’ sonic fence and turns it on, blocking Smoky and making him go away. (Side Note: I find it interesting that Richard and the Others aren’t harmed by the Sonic fence but Smoky is.)
3. Fire: I think the one time I’ve seen Smoky dislike fire is when Kate through down a stick of dynamite at him trying to save Locke from his grip in the last episode of season one. Though I think anything would have been mad having a stick of dynamite thrown at them.
Just a few thoughts.

I wish you were able to see the episodes the same week as us too, Warrior Great recap though! Very detailed.
Thoughts on tonight's episode:
b) but I don't think Flocke is "Good" either.
c)Sawyer usually makes good descisions, and seems to be good at reading people (aka, he picked up on the fact that Locke wasn't Locke right away)
d)the only reason he chose option "3" was because Flocke manipulated him into doing so, so I don't think it's the correct option.
Other thoughts:
1)Was Kate's name not amongst the rest? Or did they just not show it? Jacob did meet her and touch her.
2)Could it be Jin&Sun, not one or the other? Jacob touched both of them, and the last name could stand for both...
I really really am annoyed by the "temple/Jack" group. Richard freaked out and refused to have anything to do with Jacob, but although Sawyer had reservations about the whole thing, he certainly is a lot more enlightened about the whole situation now.
Even though it wasn't a Sawyer centric episode, he made the episode for me.

Great Episode! I absolutely can't stand when I look at the clock and there is only five minutes left of the episode! The worst part is after next week's episode we have to wait until March 30th for the next one!
I found it funny, how Richard and Ben are totally out of control of things now. Richard went from calm to panic. Ben went from master manipulator to being manipulated.
I hope Sawyer isn't on the wrong side, I definitely think Flocke is just using him for his own benefits.
I was looking forward to seeing Ben as a teacher, I had read a spoiler a few months ago and I was looking forward to seeing Ben if he had never been to the Island.
I can't wait for next week, I feel we are getting closer to the point when we learn a ton of stuff each episode!

Why do you think LOST will stop for the Winter Olympics? I thought Darlton confirmed that there weren't be a hiatus because of it?
Awaiting episode 3...

I read I think it was on DarkUFO that their going to stop until March 30th and then start up again with V airing after it. I hope I'm wrong!

Aaarrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!! That was so amazing! I love Lost.
Answers, well - kinda . . . and then some more questions.
First off, I'm loving the alternate reality (or whatever it is) story.
The Island bit of this episode was really enthralling!
The only negative thing I could think to say would be
To summarise - Yeay! Bummer about the wait after next week though I'm sure I'll survive! x
