My thoughts on + recap of episode 6.17-18 - The End (Part 3 of 3)
Jack touches his dad’s coffin and memories from the Island flood back. Christian Shephard appears and talks to Jack. Okay, something’s not right here, Christian is dead. He confirms that he is in-fact dead and Jack realises he’s dead too! Wow. That means that the epiphany of remembering times on the Island wasn’t to return there and save it but that it was an awakening to the realisation that they were dead. Trippy. So the side-ways reality isn’t really an alternate reality but their afterlife? Very much like The Matrix and yet different. Father and son finally reconcile – awesome! I’ve been waiting for that so long. This has been Jack’s journey and the having them redeem their relationship brings closure to his story. Christian tells Jack that they’re all real, that everything that ever happened to him is also real and that the people in the church, waiting for him, are real too. He explains that everyone dies eventually, but that some died before him and some died long after he did. The place they are in is void of time. Timeless. A place they all made together, so they could find each other. The most important time in his life was on the Island, spend with these people. Christian tells Jack he needed them, as much as they needed him. To remember to ‘let go’. Letting go has been a huge theme throughout the series. Letting go of guilt, of doubt, of fear, of always having control and just trusting. Beautiful. Christian tells Jack that they’re not leaving for somewhere, they’re moving on. They don’t know where they’re headed but they’re eager to find out. Jack exits the room with his dad. He greets all the Losties in the room. It’s like a huge cast party, everyone’s there – well, almost everyone. No Michael, Ben, Daniel, Ana Lucia, Charlotte or Walt. Maybe some others too. It’s a very emotional moment. It seems to me this place is not purgatory but acts similarly, as an intermediate place, before heading to the final destination. Christian opens the massive doors to the church and an intense but beautiful light envelops the room.
I don’t think them being dead and having an afterlife means their lives are made meaningless. If the Island wasn't saved, the world would've ceased to exist. In that sense they probably wouldn't have died and gone onto the afterlife but instead, they would be gone in every understanding of the word. Non-existent. That is the definition of meaningless. Nor does them having an afterlife render their deaths on the Island meaningless. They all still died, they just had a happy ending.
Island – Jack stumbles through the bamboo jungle. He passes one of his dad’s tennis shoes (from the Pilot) and lies down amongst the bamboo, in the very same spot he awoke when the series first began. Vincent runs to join Jack and lies down beside him as he slowly dies. Jack watches the Ajira plane fly overhead. He smiles and closes his eyes. And dies. But not alone.
Jack was set up as a Christ-like character from the very beginning. His surname was Shephard and he was a healer (doctor), he was a leader, he was a saviour. His seat number was 23, as was his candidate number – a not so subtle nod to Psalm 23, which talks about Christ being the great shepherd, protecting his flock from danger and guiding them to rest and renewal. Maybe the incorrect spelling of shepherd as 'Shephard' suggests he and his dad are flawed humans? At least I hope it's not a huge spelling mistake!
Notice, Jack and Locke were the only on-screen deaths on the Island? I believe that was purposeful. To show two great leaders, one who fell and one who sacrificed his life for the others. One who became a Man of Faith and one who died, broken. One who died alone (the MIB) and one who didn’t (Jack). Live together or die alone.
That's all folks!

I can definitely see some
Spoilersimilarities between Rose's 'afterlife' in Titanic and the resolution of the sideways timeline in "The End."
One other similarity I noticed between LOST and Titanic was

I find the facts you found out about the
I’ve been wanting to ask you, since I think you are the only one on here who has watched LOST from the beginning: How do you feel now that it’s all over? Are you disappointed that we didn’t get every single answer, do you feel satisfied after six years of watching the show? And would you recommend someone else to watch LOST?
I’m just curious if you get the time to answer.
I re-watched the last episode again yesterday, I just felt I needed a whole week to really take everything in before I watched it again.
Now after seeing it again yesterday I felt more happy , the whole story was ended so well and beautifully.
Everyone was saying that the ending of LOST was going to be bitter-sweet and I think that was very true, I think I got the bitter part, from my first viewing and the Sweet part from the second. I’m really happy with how it all ended.
We are going to start watching LOST once a week starting next week from beginning to end. So at least we will always be able to go back and watch this awesome show again and again, just as if I’m re-reading a favorite book.

Thanks mate!
How do I feel now that LOST is all over? It's a bitter-sweet feeling. The series has been a huge part of my life since it began and I've loved to theorise and analyse the episodes, so that required lots of time and thought. Without LOST I seem to have a bit more time in the day to do other things. I'm not sure I've let go. There's not really much more theorising to do but a lot of analysing can still do be done. There were some things about the finale I would've changed, not much though. Yes, the series is about the characters but I think the mythology should've been addressed a little too (how some mysteries tie into the series, not necessarily ones like 'What is the Hurley Bird?').
I'm emotionally satisfied with the ending. Yes, I've spent nearly six years invested in the show and I've noticed the series isn't perfect but it can't be faulted as passive entertainment. It's made me really think. I've explored complex themes and ideas. I've learnt so much in many areas of study. Discussing the show is something of a community effort. Yes, the writers etc. birthed the show but we made it our own and loved it for it, flaws and all. There's a lot going for it.
As for the many answers (big and small) that haven't been answered, I think most of them are embedded within the show, we just have to connect the dots to understand it properly.
Yes, I would absolutely recommend LOST to other people. Sadly, the only people who take my advice are online. I have one or two friends in real life I can discuss it with but others just churn out the same old 'joke' - "I watched an episode or two but I just got LOST." Yes. *groan*

Thanks for answering my questions Warrior 4 Jesus!
By the way do you plan on re-watching all of LOST?
Oh, and did you hear that on the complete LOST collection will have 12 to 14 minutes more on
I don’t know if you have to buy the complete collection or if it’s also included in the Season Six set? If anyone knows for sure please tell me.
Here’s the Link:

And here is the cover for the Season Six Collection:

Will I be re-watching the whole series? Absolutely. I've held off buying the series on DVD (it was difficult) because I wanted to see if there would be a better package at the end and it seems there will be. Yes, I'm getting the Complete Collection. I've been saving up for it.
Yes, I've heard there will be an stand-alone epilogue about Hurley and Ben on the Island. I love the idea. That's one part of the finale I felt needed a bit more Island time but it would've slowed down the pace of the episode far too much. I think it would be on both the Season 6 set and the Complete Collection but don't quote me on that. I guess we'll find out come August 24th.

/me wanders in.
I'm putting this all in spoilers, because I don't know what's kosher and what's not.
I watched the finale the other week; my first episode I've ever seen of the show. I see that seasons 1-5 are reportably on Hulu till the end of the year, so if I get my work done I may watch that soon. Now that I know how it's all gone, I am interested to watch the show for myself. I'm an impatient creature by nature, so I don't think I could have stood just going from week to week, season to season not knowing how it went. At least reading up the episodes online and looking up spoilers was a mite easier.
It is kind of sad to see Jack die at the end of the series, but if you think about it, EVERYONE dies. Kate, Hurley, Ben, Claire, everyone. We just don't see their deaths, but we know it happened. Everyone dies eventually, just like in life. For all we know, the rest of the Losties may have lived out a full and fulfilling life, but then again they may not have. So I can't be too sad for Jack's death, and it is nice to know that they all meet up and are, for all intensive purposes, going to their happily ever after.

Ditto Gymfan15!
I was really, really
I know they all died, I think what made Jack’s death sadder to me was that we actually saw it happen.
And the fact that Kate lived the rest of her life missing him (I’m guessing), so her loss and living without seeing him for a long time also made me sad.
But I agree, the best part is no matter who died before or after Jack, they all were together at the end and they all got their Happily Ever After! [/spoiler]
BTW, are you saying you haven't seen every episode? But know the end.
Or did you watch every episode online?

Neither. I read up spoilers online, plus read episode analysis's once the newer episodes had aired. Plus an occasional clip on Youtube. The finale was the first time I sat down (on Hulu) and watched an actual episode in any way, shape or form.
Yeah, I realize that I don't really qualify as a LOST fan, but that doesn't keep me from having my opinions and theories.
@GymFan15: WOW! You saw the ending without seeing a single episode!
You'll have loads of fun watching the whole show and how all the characters got to where they where in the final episode!
Out of curiosity why is it you never watched any episodes before? And what made you want to see the end before any of the other episodes?

My friend watched the ending of Lost with me the other night and was completely zoned out. But yes after rewatching it so many times the more I like the episode and it begins to make more sense.
Long Live King Caspian & Queen Liliandil Forever!

While there's no doubt that the finale makes you think, it's generally more linear than LOST normally is. I enjoyed it very much the first time but perhaps even more the second time around.

Just a friendly reminder that this thread will be closing tomorrow, so get your closing thoughts in now! (Though they are always welcome in the television thread).
A few thoughts of my own:
- The finale is growing on me, especially after rewatching it and discussing it with others.
- I'm already considering a series rewatch, from beginning to end. Season 1 got ignored when I began my last rewatch, due to time constraints. This time I'd watch them all.
- I'm fortunate to know LOST fans in real life as well as online. In fact, one of the major incentives for getting into the show was the frequent, "So, did you watch LOST last night?" conversations at work. And even though I don't work with those people anymore, we still get together for lunch on occasion, and this was one of the things we discussed. I also had an extended discussion on "The End" with friends while camping last weekend.
Nevertheless, like Warrior, I've had other friends tell me, "I watched an episode or two but I just got LOST."
- I'm impressed, Gymfan, that the finale was the first episode you watched in its entirety. Though I imagine your other exposure to the show helped reduce the confusion a bit. Enjoy watching all the past episodes!
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Yes the finale is growing on me a lot. I was really thinking about it yesterday after heading back from a Funeral I attended. Some of the words that was spoken reminded me so much of the finale and something just clicked and I was like that's it.

Yes, I can see that. Also, it's very much reminiscent of Lewis' book, The Great Divorce.
