Welcome to the newest Stargate thread on NarniaWeb! This is a place to discuss all things Stargate. From the original movie down to the canceled Universe, Stargate has been on air for quite sometime.
Stargate (the first movie)
Stargate SG-1 (series and DvD movies)
Stargate Atlantis
Stargate Universe
and of course games and books (Did you know they actually have Stargate books!?)
I really loved the movie Stargate and went to see it at the dollar theater about 5 times (this is not an exaggeration! I have the ticket stubs somewhere to prove it!). Egyptology mixed with Sci-Fi is just a win-win and c'mon, it's got Kurt Russell in it.
Now, as for the TV shows I've seen a little bit of SG-1 and liked what I saw. I've been meaning to pick this up but they don't have it at the library (that I know of). When I had cable and was up at an early hour I used to watch Atlantis on occasion. The problem with a series like this is that it's not one a person can simply tune in and watch like they've always watched, you need to start at the beginning and work through (like with Lost). Even so what I've seen of the shows I've always rather enjoyed.

Now where is Shawna off to these days?
Favorite episode of SG1: Spirits
Glad we would never, ever name pets in our house after characters from the tv show.
“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
Have to admit I got into the Atlantis series for awhile, but after so many episodes I just wanted to reach throught he screen and slap McKay across the head a few times, and yell at him to grow up. It was also a bit noxious when Shepherd seemed to have a new woman friend every other episode.
As for the original movie, I bought it, and while I enjoyed it, I found the special features rather dull. They spent far to much time trying to sell the whole "aliens built the pyramids", myth.
I guess that, in a nutshell, I enjoyed the SG-1 series, with the characters, but cannot buy the "religions originate from aliens" plotline. The episode where they have a planet in the dark ages of christianity was poorly concieved, and written
You should have seen McKay in his first couple of episodes in Stargate SG-1. He was MUCH more obnoxious!
Atlantis got MUCH better after the first couple of Wraith centric seasons. I even really like the 5th season with Woolsey running Atlantis.
My first episode of SG-1 (only a few years ago even) was one in which the main characters find themselves in a sort of "repeating" day. They get to a certain point in the day and then when they reach this limit they get zapped back to a set point earlier in the day. I thought it was hilarious that Christopher Judge's character (whose name escapes me at the moment) kept rewinding to the exact point that someone opens a door in his face really hard. Great show...I've been meaning to see if the library has this in stock. I'm guessing one needs to watch all of this before they really decide to branch into Atlantis...is there truth to that?

His name is Teal'c.

Hmm, I'm not sure!
I could be wrong about how I came to know Stargate... but I think it happened like this:
1) Saw Atlantis (and maybe an episode or two of SG-1), liked Atlantis better. Saw quite a bit of it. I want to say that this was around the time Atlantis was new??
2) Started watching more SG-1 (forget why)/loved them equally.
3) Have probably seen most episodes of each by now.
4) Started Universe, but quit after awhile (forget why). But remain sorta curious about what happened to the characters after I stopped watching.
I wish I could say more in terms of help! And that I remembered my thoughts on all three enough to have a long post. But it's been awhile since I've watched any of them.
Oh! I remember finding it interesting in SG-1 when they brought Merlin in as one of the Ancients. (other familiar characters too) Neat twist, that.
EDIT:
McKay is obnoxious, I'll admit... but he grows on you.
After awhile, I found myself just rolling my eyes at him. I guess he just takes getting used to? He's got good points too, honest!

(and that's all I'll say about that)

I must admit, he did pull off an act of brilliance at the last moment, a few times.
I guess I would just like to see some characters actually develope in shows once in awhile. As I said before, Shepherd's character would be far more interesting without the womanizing
Please note that this Special Feature will be closing on Sunday, March 27, after which you may discuss Stargate in the Movies or Television threads.
If you have a suggestion for a Special Feature, hop on over and PM one of the Spare Oom mods, and we will add it to the list. If you need more info on SFs, please see #1 of the SO bylaws.

SG-1 is my favorite Sci-fi show (and Daniel's my favorite character if you couldn't tell), but I saw a fraction of an Atlantis episode, and I didn't like it at all. I thought it was too much action, not enough thought. Do you think it was just that episode, or is that a characteristic of the series? I'll grant you, in the later seasons of SG-1 we saw more and more "Let's go kick alien butt" - themed episodes.
My two favorite episodes of SG-1 were the ones about the Yeshen. It was so mind-bendingly creepy, like something out of the twilight zone.
