I'm a huuuge Pixar fan (just going to put that out there), but of all their movies, Toy Story 3 might be my favorite. I saw it opening night with a group of friends, and I loved it! The emotions really gripped me, more so than any other Pixar movie.
I remember watching the first Toy Story when I was little, but the toy-killing neighbor kid always freaked me out. It had been a while since I last saw Toy Story 2, so I was glad it was on TV a couple of times leading up to the release of Toy Story 3.
I'm going to go see TS3 a second time.

Don't forget the Monkey.
My Dad's friend took his younger daughter to see the movie and she had nightmares from that Monkey.
nightmares? oh, that's no good, though if I was younger I would have too
yeah, the monkey was freaky too!

Day & Night (the opening short) was fun and quite different than previous Pixar shorts, though I wasn't too excited about the voice section: a radio broadcast about not fearing the unknown. I guess I prefer a little more sublety when my entertainment contains lessons.
It was different. Kind of cute and funny, but I didn't like it all that much.
(but then I'm a terrible person and didn't enjoy either Wall-E or UP as well as most people seem to)
Hey! You're not the only one. I didn't like those two near as much as all the other Pixar films.
If I was a parent, I would have taken my super young kids to that movie because of Pixar's reputation as well as the G-rating. So I can TOTALLY understand why some parents are upset right now. I'd be up in arms with them.
I completely agree. I thought that UP and TS3 were both wayyyy too intense for small kids. My little brother is 9, a diehard Pixar fan, and he was scared in both UP and TS3. In TS and TS2, the drama was somewhat melodramatic, in the sense that you almost knew it would turn out right, but weren't quite sure how. In TS3, it was like a death sentence, and even the most optimistic of fans wouldn't be sure whether it would turn out okay.
Maybe that's just me, but it seemed a bit much.
I also thought the scene where they are about to be melted to bits was over done. It was great for the first few seconds while they slid slowly towards the flames and the music got really dramatic, but after they all grabbed hands, it just kind of kept going, and got a little old.
Haha...all of those points made it sound like I hate the movie, but I really did love it. I loved the humor (it was so...Pixar) It kept me on the edge of my seat, and I think it's a great movie. I don't think it quite sums up to a lot of the other Pixar movies though...UP and TS3 just seemed too...dark for Pixar. I have a feeling it's the influence of Disney creeping in, but I could be wrong.
I didn't mind Andy giving all the toys to Bonnie. I thought they built her character well enough, and I think she was a good person to have Andy give them all too. The only doubt in my mind was - "this is where the series started! What happens when Bonnie grows up?!" But the ending was great anyhow.

I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet or not, but did anyone else catch Sid's cameo? This isn't a spoiler, so I won't bother with spoiler tags. If pay attention to the trash man who appears early in the film, you'll notice that he's wearing a black T-Shirt with a white skull on it. That's Sid! They even brought back the same guy, Erik Von Detten, who provided his voice in the first film to voice the character.
I didn't notice it at first, but my brother pointed it out after the movie was over, and I could look back and sort of see it. I find it really funny that Sid ended up as a garbage man...

I just saw Toy Story 3 last night and it was awesome! I didn't expect it to be good at all b/c if 2's are bad 3's usually are horrible. But Toy Story 2 was good so I thought they might be able to pull this off and they totally did. It was a great movie. Barbie and Ken were actually funny and I thought they would be pretty bad . I even cried bawled at the end .
Sid was the garbage man? Was he the one that was always banging on everything?

I'm 99% sure it's NOT Disney creeping in. I completely disagree with you here, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Pixar isn't making children's films. I don't know why everyone make the assumption that animated=children's. That is exactly the sort of thinking Pixar is trying to get rid of. They're making art, and good, quality films that everyone can enjoy. Sure, a few parts in some of their films might scare younger children, but so did parts in Disney classics, and no one ever complains about that. No one complains about live actions movies that are too scary for children either. I feel confident Pixar made Toy Story 3 for the children who grew up with the original 2 and not necessarily for young children.
You're completely entitled to your opinion, of course, and if you simply thought it didn't fit or was too intense for anyone (not just young children) than that's fine, but I don't see why it has to be "bad" just because it scared some of the younger children.
Just for the record, I'm known for being terribly passionate on this particular subject, but I assure you I mean no harm. I realize in the end it's really not a big deal.

Well said narnialover101. I couldn't have put it better myself. Anyone who knows animation is understanding that its not just for children (in fact, in the early days, most of it wasn't meant for children at all). No one should place a label on animation as '"childrens films" beacuse it simply isn't true. Animation is its own genre, both for adults and children.
But, I digress. I believe that, yes Toy Story 3 does have moments of childlike appeal, but it's more for older kids and adults (well, really it's for those who worked on the film). The themes of aging and what it's like to be a kid and to grow up are more for those of us who are older and have experienced it. This makes the end of the film a bit more heartfelt than for what a younger child may see in the film. For those of us that grew up on the first two films, we have more of a connection to the characters and feel more of what they feel.
As I was watching the film in theaters, I would occasionally look at the younger audience members. They were enjoying the film, but there just wasn't the deeper connection. True, kids aren't necessarily going to see the deeper meaning (nor do I expect them to, it comes with age as is supposed to be), but it was quite interesting to see the adults crying at the end of the film while the kids were packing up to leave the theater.
Long summary short, this film is to be enjoyed by all. It's not a children's movie, but a movie for all of us. That's the appeal to Pixar films. Those at Pixar don't sit down and say "what type of film can we make that will entertain small children", it's more of "what sort of film are we going to make that we will enjoy. Sorry, Disney doesn't hold the reins here, Pixar decides on the stories they want to make.

Yes! I one-hundred-million-bazillion times agree! That's exactly why I love Pixar so much. They don't make films to entertain little children. They don't throw in "humor" that the little children don't get in order to entertain the accompanying adults. No, they make films that everyone can enjoy, no matter their age.
I just saw TS3 again this evening, this time in 3D. I thought the 3D was very well done, by the way. And it's one of those movies I just want to see again, and again, and again! (Just like WALL-E, another of my Pixar favorites. I remember when that DVD first came out, I watched it four times in three days )
