On April 14, The Legend of Korra, a companion series to Avatar: The Last Airbender will begin airing. Set about 70 years after the conclusion of AtLA, The Legend of Korra considers a new generation and new Avatar. The Avatar, Korra, is sixteen year old head-strong Waterbender with a polar-bear-dog as her best friend, who has to face a number of challenges from learning airbending to dealing with an uprising faction who wish to outlaw all bending.
Although the series will air on April 14, the first two episodes were officially released this past Saturday for a short preview over the weekend.
NB Remember to use spoiler boxes for all spoilers and discussion of episodes, especially if you're able to preview them! Failure to do so may result in modly pms and being turned over to the anti-bending revolutionaries.
To get discussion started, here are a few questions.
1. How excited are you for the show to start?
2. Are you disappointed that it's set so far in the future?
3. What do you think of the characters and plot based upon the information that's been released so far?
Have fun discussing!
Some days you battle yourself and other monsters. Some days you just make soup.
For those of you who don't already know, the season premiere was released online over the weekend and Avatar fans went crazy. (Sadly it looks like as of this morning the video is no longer available. )
I haven't watched them myself because I don't have cable and I don't really want to watch any episodes until I can watch all of them. If Hulu or some other site posts them legally, then I'll keep up with the series. Otherwise I'll wait til they're available for rent/purchase and watch them that way.
Here's the website that the video was on, hopefully they'll put it back up. http://www.korranation.com/
I missed it? Argh! I'd hoped to watch it today. I'll have to wait a few weeks and watch it on TV. (Fortunately, most of the comments I've heard have been fairly positive).
1 and 2. I'm eager to watch this and see what the creators of the original show have in mind. I've heard some concerns about it being set in the future, but I think shows like Star Trek: TNG did that aspect well. (I've heard some some questions about how much steampunk there will be, and how much the world will have changed since Aang's time.)
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
I've watched both episodes
As someone who thinks the first Avatar is one of the best TV series ever made, of course I'm looking forward to the second show as well. If the first two episodes are any indicator (and they probably are, given the creators this time wrote the scripts for ALL the episodes), it will be great
1. How excited are you for the show to start? You have to ask? Over half my posts on Facebook have been about it...
2. Are you disappointed that it's set so far in the future? Actually, I'm very pleased. It provides the opportunity for a story that is familiar, yet fresh and new.
3. What do you think of the characters and plot based upon the information that's been released so far? Um, I don't have the time to answer this question right now. It'll take a lot more time to tell you what I think....

Unfortunately, it looks like it was only intended to be put up for the weekend. Makes sense, though, because it was only as a treat and reward for 100,000 shares on facebook and twitter.
Check out this review of the first episode, "Welcome to Republic City."

Hahaha, sweet! I don't have iTunes on my computer, but my sister does.
*runs off to hijack her sister's computer*
I don't know that I'll watch it any time soon, but at least now I have the option if I decide I want to.
Really?? Why didn't I hear about this?? Yes!! Thank you, shastastwin!!
*Ahem*. Okay, I've got a hold of myself now. I just can't wait to watch them...for the third time. I also want my younger sisters to see it when I go home for the summer.
Since I have a bit of time, I'll answer question #3 a bit more extensively.
Okay, that's enough of my little spiel...

I now have the first two episodes of "The Legend of Korra" on my computer courtesy of my sister. I saw them the first weekend they were put online. While I wasn't ecstatically in love with them, I'm very impressed at how good Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are at writing. They've created a very different story in the same world. Most of the time authors get stuck using the same elements over and over, but everything's different this time, but still good. I can tell already the overall plot is going to be more gritty and slightly less good verses evil.
And now spoiler time...
Korra is a strong but interesting character. I also like that she is out of touch with the spiritual, however, I'm hoping we'll still get to see the Spirit Realm at some point. It's too interesting. Mako and Bolin are both interesting, although Mako isn't particularly likable as of yet. I'll be interested to see how they develop. And if the season trailer is anything to go by, it looks like Mako might become a love interest. Tenzin isn't quite a likable as Iroh, but he's his own person and a father, which I like. On a side note I hope Aang got to see at least one grandchild. I don't know if any character can ever replace Zuko for me. He was my favorite character as I'm a sucker for redemption. I'm grateful the writers didn't TRY to replace him.
I really liked the twenties feel the show has going, especially the bro-bending commentary. It's perfect for a post-world-war world. And I think the advance in technology makes sense. I also enjoyed the score. I'm not much of a music critic, but the slightly jazzier theme worked well for the energetic and technologically advanced Republic City. And for the most part the animation was beautiful and interesting. It was very much like ATLA but slightly higher budget. I had a few gripes with still frames were people held perfectly still unnaturally, but I'm sure these guys aren't made of money and can't move every character every moment of the show.
Anyways, overall I'd probably give it 4.5 of 5 stars. I'm very intrigued by the anti-bender movement, and the metal bending police and where Korra's mastery of air will take her.

I completely agree! Zuko was my favorite character as well, probably for the same reason.

I caught today's premiere of the first 2 episodes the old fashioned way.
I agree with many of the comments above:
On the whole, the animation looks very good. Most of the time, the music reminded me of the old ATLA style, but it might take me a little while to get used to those occasional unexpected jazz or upbeat elements. That's a minor nitpick though.
The rapid advances in tech are pretty amazing for 70 years - electricity, radio, internal combustion - but it does give it a sort of Roaring Twenties meets ancient China feel. I enjoyed the bending tournament - just as the one in "The Blind Bandit" did, the narration reminded me of friends' viewing of the old All-Star Wrestling programs back in the 1970s.
Very nice to see a cameo from Katara as well as a few descendants from the original series. Lin Beifong fits right in as the chief of police given her insistence on enforcing the law on everyone - rather unlike her mother's more free-wheeling attitude toward rules as being made to be broken.
Naming a character Mako after Iroh's voice actor was a welcome nod. Now to see if he becomes more likable...
Final verdict after 2 episodes...I'll keep watching.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
I completely forgot that those episodes were airing on TV today. That's what comes of always watching everything on line. I'm glad you liked it 'gazer!
So I assume that a new episode goes up every week this season? I don't have cable so unless someone puts it online, I have no way to watch it.
On the off-chance, there's anyone else who hasn't seen the first two episodes early, they're currently on the nickelodeon website. I'd originally thought they were just put up today, but to be honest, I'm not sure how long they've been up and whether or not this means they'll put up the next episodes after they air. I hope so, because I'm hooked.
I liked all of the characters we met, which I wasn't really expecting to. Tenzin and his entire family are hilarious. I'm sure I'll have other comments to discuss later, though you all seem to have hit on some of the most obvious ones already.
I'm assuming that they'll be a new episode every week too, Ara. And, like you, online will be my only way to watch it so I'm really, really hoping it goes on Hulu or Nick puts them up or something. Otherwise we might have to resort to desperate measures, such as sneaking on campus and commandeering one of their tvs every Saturday morning, which'd be really embarrassing.
Some days you battle yourself and other monsters. Some days you just make soup.
Must say that I was never a fan of the original series. I guess it was the spiritual aspect of it. I did not notice that in the episode I saw this morning, which I assume was the first. It looked interesting, and the characters, while obviosly we see possble romance, and conflict, there is plenty of room for character development.
I will have to try to catch the next few, and just see how it develops.
So I assume that a new episode goes up every week this season?
I believe that's correct; it should air at 10 am each week in our timezone.
Aravanna,
I'm sure I'm overthinking it.
