[Closed] Special Feature: Super Bowl XLVI

Once again, it's time for the big game. They've been preparing for it all year. Now, the best of the best will meet to settle once and for all the age-old question: who has the best commercial?!?!

And oh yeah, there's a football game too. ;)

The New York Giants will play the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl tomorrow for the NFL championship, a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, when the Giants stunned the then-unbeaten Patriots 17-14. Some questions to get us started on this year's game:
Is anyone besides me more excited about the game than the commercials? :p
Who are you rooting for, Giants or Patriots? Any predictions?
Since commercials and the Super Bowl have become inseparable, what's your favorite SB commercial of all time? What about favorite halftime shows?

Mark my words, someday I will think of something brilliant to put in my sig.

I'm looking forward to this rematch. It should be a good game.

Time was when the Super Bowl had trouble living up to all its hype (I'm still not sure it needs 6 hours of pregame coverage ;)) ) - the game seemed to end in a blowout so much of the time. But the past few years have seen some pretty good games.

We've been having Super Bowl parties for years now, off and on, and even people who don't care about football come along to enjoy the food and time with friends.

Halftime shows seem often overrated, in my opinion (still, looking back on this list, there have been some pretty good performances in recent years). Some years we don't watch them depending on our audience (sometimes we pop in a kids video for the little ones, if they're bored). I recall watching The Who a couple years ago; when their signature song came on ("Who Are You") we had to explain to the youngster people in our group that they weren't covering the CSI theme, but that the show was in fact using an already existing song. ;))

Favorite commercials? There have been some good ones. Two favorites come to mind.

The first, for Tabasco sauce, only aired a few times (as far as I can tell). Love the ending:

Another is the Darth Vader/VW ad from last year. This one's just plain cute:

It will have a sequel tomorrow. Be sure to watch past the car commercial (the fun part begins around 0:43). Not on my favorites list, but still fun:

With kickoff just a few hours away, I'll go ahead and make my predictions. I think the key to the game is going to be how much pressure the Giants can get on Tom Brady. To counter that, the Patriots are going to try to establish the running game and have Brady throw quick passes. On offense, the Giants are going to have to run the ball, use up some clock, and keep Brady and the Pats offense on the sidelines as much as possible. From some of the pregame interviews, I think the Giants are a little overconfident, and I think New England will be motivated to avenge the Super Bowl XLII loss. Patriots 28, Giants 24.

Mark my words, someday I will think of something brilliant to put in my sig.

I think it was one of the best Super Bowl games I've seen (it probably helped that while I was rooting for the Giants - they're from the NFC - my preference was for a good, close game no matter who won).

And it went down to the wire, with an incredible sidelines catch setting up that last "accidental" Giants TD with too much time left.

Commercials? Some of them got laughs from our group, but right now none of them really stand out as ones everyone will be talking about around the water cooler tomorrow.

Halftime show? Madonna and a marching band. ;))

My predictions were off, but I was hoping the Giants would win, so I really don't care. The Giants really dominated that game. Except for a couple of drives, they shut down the Patriots offense, and got enough pressure on Brady to get a safety and make sure he didn't get comfortable. The Giants were moving the ball well too, but kept having to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns, which kept the Patriots in the game. The Giants caught a few lucky breaks, such as fumbling the ball three times but never losing it, and the Patriots dropping some key passes, and came up with a huge drive late in the fourth. Mario Manningham's catch wasn't quite as good as David Tyree's from a few years ago, but impressive nonetheless. Congrats to New York! When does next season start?

Oh, and the commercials were pretty underwhelming.

When does next season start?

The preseason begins in about 6 months, in early August. (Let's hope the Vikings do better than 3-13!)

But it's less than 2 months to Opening Day in MLB. :)

I didn't have much preference regarding which team would win the game until I heard that New England cut a player the day before the Super Bowl. They should have made their changes mid-season, not the day your family is kissing you good luck for tomorrow. Not the day you get your haircut to the Lucky Win-the-Super-Bowl Team Haircut.

The Super Bowl is the ultimate goal for a football player. The odds are that, like most players, this Tiquan Underwood fellow will never be this close to a Super Bowl again. Underwood tried to stay classy about it, though.

After I heard about that, I was pulling for the Giants in a big way. Hey, New England: not cool.

EDIT: It gets better. They hired him back after they lost the big game. Double not cool. Double coolness points for the actual man, though, signing on with the team that treated him rather shabbily. This guy must really want to play football.

It's back! My humongous [technical term] study of What's behind "Left Behind" and random other stuff.

you know what's funny? I kept saying that I wasn't going to watch the game, but I ended up watching almost all of it :P
the ads this year were, IMO, lame :P
and I was slightly disappointed that the Pats didn't win, but I don't care much for football so... :P
