I really liked the recent movie. I can't wait to see the sequel, especially with Anton Yelchin! Love that actor! :D

The Original Series first aired when I was a kid,

WOW!! That is so amazing!!! :)

I've only seen the most recent Star Trek movie, but I am familiar with the series. (more so now, after reading Shadowlander's explanation...ha) My friend saw one of the series, although I don't know which one. The movies was interesting, typical sci-fi running around and shooting and bang bang, but it was fun. I didn't know a sequel was coming out...sunds pretty cool. Does anyone know when it will be out?

Tentatively the summer of 2012. (*Makes mental note to add that to her 2012 to see list...)

I watched almost every episode of the original Star Trek when I was 10. it was my favorite show back in 2000. I loved the tribble episode, and I named my parakeet after Miri from the episode called "Miri". My favorite character back then was Scottie, because he was Scottish like me. But now I like Dr. McCoy the best, and Spock second. Those two made such a great frienemy type duo. ;))

I have seen only two of the Star Trek older movies. The Spock one and the one about whales. I liked them, but they were too dark. It made it seem almost like a different show.

I've seen a lot of episodes of TNG, but I never liked it as much as the original series. I never saw Voyager. My parents always watched Enterprise, and so I saw episodes of that when they did. I never cared for it that much, but I did like the guy on there with the ... Texas accent, was it? :D

And I love the new movie. I think they did a great job with the casting, making them seem like the characters from the original series. McCoy especially reminds me of the original McCoy. And I think I like Simon Pegg's Scotty even more than the original. ;))

Good idea Shadowlander in starting this out. I must take issue though with your saying Star Trek being considered the mother of all sci-fi series. I am afraid that must fall to Doctor Who. Unless you only meant American series that is /:)
Favorit episodes? Too many I'm afraid. But I always liked "The Trouble with Tribbles". There was the episode, and you will please forgive my forgetting the title, where they had "hippies" on board, and spock joined them in a jam session.
TNG episodes provided some of the most memorable scenes. Data as Friar Tuck. Ryker, (I honestly despised the character), getting hauled over the bar by Data's "daughter" and getting a kiss laid on him, only to be questioned by Data about his intentions toward his daughter.
Wrath of Kahn was by far the best of all the movies. That includes the reboot, which had it's moments, but went way too far with Kirk in the woman's dorm with Uhura's green roomate. Though I did enjoy Scotty's character.

True, Dr. Who has been around longer, and I think it's statistically run far longer than Trek has. I guess there may be some regional differences here to consider...still, 11 movies (with another one in the works), 5 separate series, massive (and rabid) fan base, licensing (toys, model kits, uniforms, etc.) and such definitely give a bit more heft to Star Trek.

Uhura's green roommate was from Orion. That was most definitely a nod to the first episode in the series ;)).

Let's talk about Federation Starships, baby! B-)

Here's the old Constitution class Heavy Cruiser you'll recognize from TOS and the first 6 movies:

And the Refit version...

Excelsior Class Battleship

Ambassador Class Battleship

Miranda Class Destroyer (always had a soft spot for this one)

Centaur Class Destroyer - Medium Cruiser

Oberth Class Scout

Steamrunner Class Destroyer

Akira Class Heavy Cruiser (my personal favorite...beautiful lines!)

Galaxy Class Battleship

Nebula Class Heavy Cruiser

Intrepid Class Cruiser

I only wish they had more Frigates and Corvettes...the little ships are my favorites. ;))

Lady A: I obviously need to watch Wrath of Khan again; I don't remember what you put in the spoiler boxes. :p I do remember liking the movie a lot though.

The same applies to the Captains: Picard tells everyone to sit down, and then shoots them. Kirke shoots, and tells them to sit down. And then Scotty cleans up the mess. :P (And the last one is too a captain! Check the credits!)

:)) Yep, that's them.

I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but I view ST:TMO as a kind of 2001: A Space Odyssey: great special effects and score with a too cerebral plot that is more goofy than engaging.

Actually, I agree with this. Although TMO is at least somewhat more interesting than 2001. But, then again, I haven't seen the whole thing so I can't really compare the two.

As I understand it most fans don't consider the 22 episodes of the Animated Series (airing in 1973-74) to be canon

Oh! I forgot about those. I've seen every episode. Most of them were rather dull and relied too heavily on alternate universes and/or transporter accidents, although a few actually managed to be interesting.

Speaking about TOS, has anyone experienced the episodes they digitally remastered and updated (a la George Lucas) a few years back?

Yes! I saw most of them when they were airing on.....whichever channel that was. Very nice. I'm at school so I can't watch the links but I'll be sure to do that when I get home.

They're making a new movie? I didn't know that.

Wow. I had no idea there were so many different Starships. I guess I'm not as much of a Trekkie as I thought I was. ;))

Shadowlander. I must say you did an admirable job in listing the Starships, but you neglected to mention two.
The original Enterprise, from the series of the same name ;)
And I almost forgot the Defiant from Deep Space Nine #:-s
I will not count the funny looking sub-model that was used in the original series as both Kahn's sleeper ship in one episode, and an automated cargo vessel in another 8-|
Edit: And here I am wide awake after sleeping on it, only to realize I had forgotten one myself. The Kelvin, (destroyer I think), in which James Kirk's father is First Mate in the beginning of the reboot

I just saw the newest Star Trek movie a few days ago, and I noticed something. Did anyone else notice that Spok's eyebrows were at different angles during different scenes? Sometimes they were higher, sometimes they were lower. (and I don't mean when he was moving them, I mean when they were relaxed.) I'm just interested, is that my imagination, or is it a make-up designer's mistake?

I dunno, I didn't notice that.

I did notice that, throughout the entire series, Spock's ears change significantly. ;)) Anyone else notice that? Sometimes they're nearly elven looking, sometimes they have a more erect, german shepherd-ish point.

I haven't watched enough of TOS to notice that, but I did notice that Spock's ears are far larger than the Vulcan ears on later shows. For instance, T'Pol on ST:E basically just has a mild point to her ears instead of the massive pointy things Spock had.

Fun motivational posters, SL. I especially like that first one.

Other random Trek comments:

Earlier I mentioned that many fans don't consider The Animated Series to be canon. One of the criticisms I've read is that it's because it has pink tribbles. (Seems trivial, but Trek fans can be passionate!). It turns out that last month, Ryadian's older sister (who literally grew up to weekly viewings of TNG during its first run) received a pink tribble from her husband for Valentine's Day. Fun for all. ;))

And in the mid-90s, there was an animated TV series called Gargoyles - you may have heard me comment on it before - that featured numerous voice actors from all the Trek incarnations (except Enterprise, which didn't exist yet). I understand it became kind of a running joke in the studio making the series.

Trek actors who appeared in the animated show include Nichelle Nichols (TOS), Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis from TNG (who were 2 of the leads in the later show); LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Brent Spiner (all from TNG), as well as Avery Brooks (DS9) and Kate Mulgrew (Voyager). Adding guest stars that appeared on both series would make the list quite a bit longer. [/random]

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

Additional listings of starships that I have found are
The Defiant from DS9,

And the Bozeman, a Luna Class Captained by non other than Kelsey Grammer, in the episode, "Cause and Effect" of TNG.

All I have, so far.

While I normally do not believe in violence, the Diplomacy panel is quite good.
