I just recently picked up an H.P. Lovecraft book and have no previous experience with the author. Are there any movies with his work in it? He is supposed to be one of the greatest horror writers to ever live and I'm curious if anything of his has ever been adapted to the screen.

Nobody's mentioned Troll 2? That one's a classic!

Re-Animator, a 1985 film is based on a Lovecraft story (Herbert West - Re-animator) but plays it differently, it's a bit slapstick. There's a bit of mature content but if you're ok with that I really recommend it, it's one of my favourite films. This being said, it tends to be a love it or hate it film The basic plot is this guy (West) finds a way of re-animating corpses, but as always happens, things don't work out too well.
There's not actually many direct adaptions of Lovecraft's work, but there's tons that are inspired by it and borrow some elements. Off the top of my head, Evil Dead is somewhat Lovecraft inspired, and The Thing is very similar to At the Mountains of Madness.
There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in.
I think the scariest movie I have ever seen would be "Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" (Chris Massoglia, Josh Hutcherson). it's pretty epic and creepy.
I'm not into vampires, but this movie weaves a clever story and is well casted, well acted, and well made!

I watched Jurassic Park the other day. It was scary in places. All those dinosaurs creeping around chasing those people. *shudders*
