Oh huzzah! An RK thread! Relient K is my very favourite band! I've listened to them since I was 11 or 12, I think. They're the only band that survived my growing up. I lost interest in all the other stuff I listened to when I was that young.

It is my plan to use 'My Girl's Ex-Boyfriend' at my wedding. :D My mom keeps telling me I'll outgrow it. (She is wrong. :p ) When Five Score came out, I added 'The Best Thing' and 'Must Have Done Something Right' to the list.

My favourite album/EP of theirs is probably The Bird and the Bee Sides. I love the mix of their old-school goofiness and their new, more serious stuff. I have to say I was a little disappointed with Forget and Not Slow Down when I first heard it. It doesn't feel quite like the Relient K that I grew up. Dave's absence is really obvious. That said, I still love it, and it has grown on me a lot.

They've had more than three EP's though... more like a bazillion, most of which aren't available anymore. :((

Hooray, I was wondering when a thread for these guys would show up. :P Although we've pretty much discussed them tons already in the Fav Music thread ;))

Yeah, there are 3 other EPs that you didn't list - after 2000 A.D.D., they released The Creepy EP (2001), Employee of the Month EP (2002), and The Vinyl Countdown EP (2003). Pretty much all of the songs on these EPs, except for a few, appear on later albums or ended up on TBATBS. Some of the songs that are re-released on later studio albums sound only slightly different--maybe the vocals come out of different sides of the stereo in a few parts. :P But they're pretty much the same. Another EP I guess you could say is the Must Have Done Something Right EP - it includes a different version of MHDSR (the end doesn't fade, but cuts off immediately) as well as Fallen Man, which is the non-acoustic version of the song "Hope For Every Fallen Man" (on TBATBS).

GtG and I were discussing playing RK at our weddings too ;)) I'd love to play The Best Thing or MHDSR. The sad thing is basically any of the songs he wrote for Shannon would be perfect for a wedding :| I don't want to get into this topic though.
Oh, and just as I'm saying that, I will contradict myself to ask this question-- does it look like Shannon to you in the music video for The Best Thing? She doesn't look quite the same, but, I've always wondered if that's her.

Recently I bought their cover of DC Talk's Between You And Me. I prefer RK's version by a lot ;)) I also got Manic Monday from a random compilation of songs on the "punk goes 80's" CD (from iTunes).

Also, if you guys haven't already, you should buy some of the RK members' side projects! Some aren't available for purchase anywhere, but there are 3 Agnes (Dave Douglas) songs and 4 Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes songs on this album: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-oth ... d326742302 Poison Ivy by Matt T is probably my favorite. It's very beautiful, but sad ...
Also check out the Gypsy Parade EP that Dave and his wife Rachel released last summer.

I'll write more later once somebody else chimes in ;))

For those interested, the entire "Mmhmm" album is available from Amazon MP3 for only $5. (Considering there are 14 songs on the album, I would think that's a pretty good deal...) I'm downloading the album right now, so I'll give my opinion of it after I give the songs a listen.

I already bought one song from the album off iTunes a long time ago, "High of 75", which I really like.

"A Series of Miracles", a blog about faith and anime.

^ Wow, that is a good deal. Although if anyone is interested in paying twice that much, :P I suggest buying it on Gotee's website since right now 100% of the profit goes to help Haiti (mentioned this in the other thread already).
MMHMM was the first RK album I bought. The first song I bought was Be My Escape (in June 2009), and that was a couple weeks before I got mmhmm... then it suddenly occurred to me that "wait, maybe Relient K has some other good songs too.." haha, I know, I'm such a genius. After I downloaded the rest of, I couldn't help by facepalm myself for not getting into the band sooner. I still don't know if mmhmm or 5 Score is my favorite, but it sort of goes back and forth between those two.
In a recent interview Matt T referenced mmhmm as a "cheesy pop punk album", and said that now he was going through different things so he was writing about different things. I guess Matt doesn't really like mmhmm anymore ;))

Relient K has really quickly become one of my favourites.
Let's see.. I first heard of them ages ago, listened to a couple of songs and liked them. A while later I listened a lot more (Youtube :p ) and bought WIAHWIB, The Best Thing, MHDSR and Getting Into You. But I didn't get any more until I bought Five Score on iTunes at the end of December (I think), got MMHMM at my birthday, bought Apathetic about a week ago and soon after TLDMAR..BTD, then FANSD yesterday. :p
Wow. I think I went a bit overboard..

I want to get the first two as soon as possible (probably not for a while), maybe TBATBS once I've had time to breathe.. lol.

Aww.. Matt doesn't like MMHMM anymore? But.. I just got it.. :(( :((
Hehe.. ahh well, FANSD wasn't so bad. :p

Oh, I meant to comment on this before-

I've listened to them since I was 11 or 12, I think. They're the only band that survived my growing up. I lost interest in all the other stuff I listened to when I was that young.

That's really cool. I wish I could say that I've been listening to my favorite band for that long, but sadly it's been less than a year ;))

Aww.. Matt doesn't like MMHMM anymore? But.. I just got it.

Who cares what he thinks? If we still like it that's what matters :P I dunno that he dislikes it really, it's probably more that he just prefers what he's doing now.

Haha! There's one thing I can say, getting obsessed with bands that have been around for a while is certainly more expensive than with bands that have only released a couple albums :P

If anyone is so inclined, take this quiz I made and see how much you know about Matt T ;)

Haha! There's one thing I can say, getting obsessed with bands that have been around for a while is certainly more expensive than with bands that have only released a couple albums :p

no kidding! I've spent so much money on RK stuff lately :| :p ...

It is my plan to use 'My Girl's Ex-Boyfriend' at my wedding. :D My mom keeps telling me I'll outgrow it. (She is wrong. :p ) When Five Score came out, I added 'The Best Thing' and 'Must Have Done Something Right' to the list.

lol yeah I have alot of their songs on my song list for my wedding. Yeah I already have one :p .

My favourite album/EP of theirs is probably The Bird and the Bee Sides. I love the mix of their old-school goofiness and their new, more serious stuff. I just got TB&TBS and I love it. It does have a great mix of songs and I like the slight country sound it has. I was also dissapointed in FANSD when I first heard it but now I really like it. RK does sound different, but they've also improved in a lot of ways. I miss Dave but Ethan is a pretty awesome dude. So I'm ok with the change :) .

That I ever got into Relient K is pretty much a miracle. :p Back around 2000, I only listened to:
1. classical music
2. a country artist named Adele Morgan (she's from Alaska and my dad grew up with her)
3. anything I had to listen to for school
One of my friends quickly realized I needed to hear a little more variety in music. She attempted to get me hooked on her favorite groups at the time (namely Skillet, Pink, and Nickleback). As you can imagine, the transition from Beethoven to Skillet is a little... extreme. :p I wasn't very co-operative. So she tried some milder stuff (Jump5 and BarlowGirl), and I was hooked. I became a little more adventureous with music, got WOW Hit's 2007, and thought that RK's song "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" was pretty good. I found Five Score in a Christian music store, and the rest is history.

I'd like to play some RK at my wedding, but I also want my parents to come. ;)) Let's just say RK isn't their favorite.

When I first saw this thread I was a bit puzzled, thinking it odd that a group of youths would show such fervent interest in a 25 year old mid-line Chrysler coupe/sedan from the mid-1980's. Still, the Reliant-K (also known as the "K-Car") was a real innovation for its time, stuffing all the luxuries (like roomier seating) you'd expect out of a larger car into a smaller chassis, and all powered by a 4-cylinder engine and topped off with front wheel drive, which was unheard of back then. This made it relatively cheap to manufacture. Lee Iacoca, CEO of Chrysler at the time (who had helped in designing the classic Ford Mustang 20 years earlier) used the Reliant-K to dig Chrysler out of bankruptcy during the 80's. The K-Car proved popular with consumers and fairly reliable and literally saved Chrysler.

The band Reliant-K's name is an homage to this car, it turns out. They just changed the name Reliant to Relient to avoid lawsuit issues. Just FYI! :D

Yeah my parents aren't big fans either but it would be my wedding :p

Shadowlander: hehe yeah they named it that after Matt Hoopes' car. They thought it sounded cool. Matty T (Thiessen) later got one as well but he sold it...my dad almost got one of those cars recently- I would have been so excited if he did but he got a Ford Focus instead :( :p .

oh and Aslans Country: it doesn't matter whether he still likes MMHMM or not :p . It's a great album- almost every single song on there I've rated 5 stars :D ...

I actually have freaked out over seeing one of these cars recently just because I'm such a nerdy fan of the band.

Winterlife, yeah, Relient K was a BIG departure from what I normally liked when I got into them last year. My tastes have changed dramatically over the past several months ;)) But yeah, Be My Escape is pretty standard, so I didn't think much of that, but when I bought mmhmm and listened to it for the first time I couldn't believe there was an extremely tiny bit of screaming in I So Hate Consequences, Which to Bury, Life and Death after Taxes... I was like Oh no! I'm not liking these guys as much as I thought I would. But I started liking them pretty fast :P

That's really cool. I wish I could say that I've been listening to my favorite band for that long, but sadly it's been less than a year ;))

But in a few years you can say you've been listening to them since you were sixteen! ;)

Aww.. Matt doesn't like MMHMM anymore? But.. I just got it.

Who cares what he thinks?

:)) The way I see it is that he's probably just outgrown it. Sometimes as you get better at something, your old stuff gets sillier, at least to you. I still love Mmhmm too. (After all, it has Who I Am Hates Who I've Been, which is one of my most-favourites.)

I miss Dave but Ethan is a pretty awesome dude.

I miss Dave's backing vocals. I always thought he had a cool voice. I think Ethan's every bit as good a drummer as Dave. I'll have to ask my drummer brother what he thinks. Speaking of Dave, I thought I'd mention that Gypsy Parade has gone the way of the dinosaur. He and his wife have a band called Attack Cat now, but I think the songs are the same, it seems like it was just a name change.

My parents had a K Car back in the 80's. (They like to point this out to me whenever I'm on an RK rampage.) Apparently it was very reliable until they took it on their honeymoon and it broke down in some little podunk town halfway to California. ;)) My dad's still got the trunk laying around somewhere with his other car parts and junk. Don't ask me what happened to the rest of the car, or why we only kept the trunk, because I have no clue. 8-} :-

They aren't her favourite or anything, but my mom doesn't actually mind RK. My dad however... once he walked into my room while I had their Christmas CD playing. He said something in Dutch which I couldn't translate into English but I know what it means (something like noise and/or sacrilege. ;) ) He likes their Beach Boys covers though. *hums Sloop John B*

Oh and as for side projects, Ethan Luck's project (My Red Hot Nightmare) also has three songs on the 'My Other Band' album that MissAravis mentioned. Ah! And Poison Ivy! I forgot about that song! It's my favourite too. *runs off to listen to it* And for you Owl City fans, I think Matty T and Adam Young are planning to make a side project too. I forget the exact name though... something to do with Dubai.

Hello Dubai...I think :p . Can't wait for it!

Hehe yeah my dad hates their Christmas album. Especially Handel's Messiah. He says they shouldn't ruin classics :| /:) :p . But my parents don't usually like any of the music I listen to so I don't take offense anymore when they say their ears are bleeding and what not :p ...

Just bought Poison Ivy since everyone seems to like it so much. Imagine my shock at searching it up on iTunes and finding a Jonas Brothers song of the same name :-o *vomits* :| :p ...I stil haven't listened to it yet though... :)

Dave does have a better voice but I still like Ethan's. But I also like Ethan b/c he's an awesome photographer. I liked his photography before he joined the band so I was kinda a fan before so maybe I'm a b it biased :p .

Hmm no kidding (about Matty T outgrowing MMHMM)...I look at some of the stuff I've written (songs, stories, and poems, etc) even just a year ago and am shocked by how horrible I think they are now :p .

Adam & Matt's side project is actually called Goodbye Dubai. Although so far we have no news that they are going to be doing it for sure. Matt just mentioned in an interview that they were likely going to start one, and then absolutepunk.net made it sound like it was official...

Speaking of Dave, I thought I'd mention that Gypsy Parade has gone the way of the dinosaur. He and his wife have a band called Attack Cat now, but I think the songs are the same, it seems like it was just a name change.

Yeah, pretty soon after they released the Gypsy Parade EP they called it quits and then formed Attack Cat which consists of them plus 3 other members. I liked their sound as Gypsy Parade better, but Attack Cat is growing on me. I just started listening to them really recently though. Their dance remix of "sexy song" gets stuck in my head way too often... ;)) (

)

Yeah, about their Christmas songs, some of them my mom likes and others she hates. She likes I celebrate the Day, at least I think she can tolerate it... haha. But on the radio one day "Santa Claus Is Thumbing to Town" came on (I was in the car w/ her and my grandmother), and she kept saying how awful it was... but she wanted to wait and see if the next song was good so we listened through the whole thing. My grandmother said something about it being heavy metal =)) And my mom just kept talking about how bad it was. And I... was sitting there trying to not say who it was because then she'd hate RK even more :P

My parents had a K Car back in the 80's. (They like to point this out to me whenever I'm on an RK rampage.) Apparently it was very reliable until they took it on their honeymoon and it broke down in some little podunk town halfway to California.

DUDE! That is pretty awesome. ;)) Not the breaking down part of course. :P

I still haven't listened to My Red Hot Nightmare. I need to listen to some Audio A and Ace Troubleshooter just 'cause Schnecky and Warne were in them..... though I think Jon is only in a couple live recordings/dvds for Audio A.

By the way, if anyone's interested in obtaining the old EPs that you can't buy anymore, send me a PM!
