"Lucy, I'm home!"

Ricky Ricardo's classic line is familiar to many of us old enough to remember the old TV shows that aired in the early or mid-1960s - or perhaps you recognize it from your parents, or seeing I Love Lucy in reruns.

In addition to Lucy, the early 60s featured a lot of shows (often in black-and-white, at least at first) that are now considered "classic TV," from doctor shows (Dr. Kildaire, Ben Casey), military shows (Rat Patrol), Westerns (The Guns of Will Sonnett, The Rifleman, The Virginian), and legal shows (Ironside, Judd for the Defense, just to name a few.

We can't forget comedy (Car 54 Where Are You, The Munsters, The Addams Family) as well as other classics like Andy Griffith, The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone).

Feel free to discuss any of these oldie-but-goodies: favorite shows, episodes, characters, comedy sketches, and so on. (For a little refresher on these shows, or for more show titles, check out CrazyAboutTV's 1960s page).

Thanks to starkat for the topic suggestion!

I didn't grow up with I Love Lucy (I was born in the early 80's) and I missed reruns, but I've watched 6 or so episodes on YouTube and enjoyed some of them - they ranged from being hilarious to rather lame and sometimes they were even confusing (maybe you have to be American to get some of the jokes?) Lucy's a crazy lady though, that's for sure.

I didn't grow up with The Twilight Zone either but I've heard that it's been a huge influence on most fiction in the last 50 or so years, so I had to see it. I'd heard about the series during my childhood but only started watching it several years ago. I've only seen Season 1 so far. There were some great episodes, lots of imagination and issues to think about while enjoying the twists and turns of the stories.

Recently I've been watching, for the first time, The Dick Van Dyke Show. It's pretty good, even if the boy's lines seem overly scripted. I've always been a fan of Get Smart (even if it's terribly lame at times). Doctor Who was huge in Australia, but the series came into it's own more with the advent of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker in the late 60's and early 70's. The Avengers had it's moments of greatness, as did the Thunderbirds and Joe 90. My absolute favourite 60's series is Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner. It was very thought-provoking, creative and even rather unsettling towards the end.

Also, Gumby, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Mission Impossible, Mr Squiggle, The Sooty Show, Warner Bros cartoons etc.

I think that's about it from me.

Hogan's Heroes is a favorite of mine. I have the full series on DVD. Lucy is great for a laugh, but it does get a bit over the top and tiring after a bit.

I loved I Love Lucy growing up! and I can still sit to it now, I caught it on reruns having been born in the 80s.

I loved I Dream Of Jeanie, Bewitched, Gilligan's Island, Leave it to Beaver as well- among some of the shows mentioned in earlier posts.

Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges! They'd crack me up as well :))

In my opinion I Love Lucy is one of the best shows ever. They are hilarious! I own all 9 seasons and watch them all the time. I also own 2 seasons of Here's Lucy.

The name certainly doesn't lie, I absolutely love "I love Lucy". It's probably one of my favorite tv shows, if not my most favorite. You know that you truly have something wonderful and special when you can watch an episode over and over again and not tire of it. Ths is a quality that is missing in many of the tv shows that we have now (a bit disappointing).

Favorite epsiodes, however hard it is to narrow down a list: 'Job Switching', 'Lucy Does a TV Commercial', 'The Ricardos Go to Japan', 'The Operetta', and 'Lucy Raises Tulips'.

Yes, these are hilarious, especially the first - 'Lucy Does a TV Commercial', 'The Ricardos Go to Japan'.

They're not from the 60's but the Marx Bros. were amazing.

I need to watch these again! I love I Love Lucy! We used to watch a couple episodes every day on the Hallmark channel ;)) . I don't think I've seen any other classics tv shows though...

My favourite "classics" include The Roy Rogers Show and Get Smart. I do somewhat like The Beverly Hillbillies, however I have found that sometimes the things they joke about (or perhaps are made fun of in the show) are things that I don't like. It would go over the heads of most younger audiences, but now that I'm older I'm catching some of it...and I don't like it. I also like The Andy Griffith show although I've only seen a handful of episodes from that series.

I haven't seen any I Love Lucy episodes, but I have seen about ten episodes or so from The Lucy Show, those ones could be pretty funny too. :)

Ugh. I borrowed Season 1 of The Lucy Show from my local library thinking it was I Love Lucy repackaged and renamed for the Australian market. No. I didn't like it. The colours were garish and the humour was very flat. It was just horrible.

I know some others but they're not from the 60's, more like the 70's (hope that's okay?) but they're still classics.
Ripping Yarns (1976), Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em (1973), Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969 onwards) - at times it got a bit too crude though. Fawlty Towers (1975) is the best of the lot though. And for something so cheesy it's good, you can't go past the Japanese martial-arts/drama take on the Buddhist myth, 'Journey to the East' - Monkey (1978).

Fawlty Towers - don't mention the War!

So many Special Features, so little time.......Anyhow, I've haven't seen very many episodes of I Love Lucy, but I have seen enough to form an opinion. Some of the episodes are very funny, and some of them are just plain silly. I have seen reruns of lots of the other shows though!

Addams Family--the best part is the opening credits.

Andy Griffith Show--not one of my favorites, but still alright.

The Avengers--it's been awhile, but I do remember liking them.

Beverly Hillbilles--same jokes over and over like most comedies, but good in small doses.

Car 54 Where Are You--saw 2 episodes, was not impressed.

The Dick Van Dyke Show--one of the better ones. Dick Van Dyke's falls and facial expressions are always good for a laugh even if the plot isn't.

The Flying Nun--I'm not sure what to say about this one. It's about a nun who can fly. :p

Get Smart--take in small doses. If you watch too many episodes at once your brain might explode from an overdose of silliness. 8-}

Gilligan's Island--where do Ginger and Marianne get all of their clothes from???

Hogan's Heroes--I really like this show. Funny, but not too silly and usually just enough serious moments to balance it out nicely.

I Spy--it's been awhile, so I don't remember a whole lot, but I remember liking most of the episodes I saw.

Mission Impossible--also one I like. My siblings complain about it because the missions almost always go perfectly and they never get caught. I tell them that's partly why it's fascinating but they don't listen.

Petticoat Junction--I've seen a grand total of four episodes. That's two hours I could have spent doing something else.

The Prisoner--it was very weird, but I liked it.

The Rifleman--good, although often predictable.

Star Trek--Scotty, beam me up. B-)

And (of course) The Twilight Zone--there is absolutely nothing like a New Year's Eve marathon of this show.
