What do all of these things have in common?
MacGyver!
A television series that ran in the U.S. from 1985 - 1992 with two follow up movies. MacGyver (played by Richard Dean Anderson) focused on a man who worked for the Phoenix Organization doing various jobs around the world. One of the things MacGyver is best known for is his ability to turn common, everyday items into things he needed to solve the problem or save the day. The series became well known enough that references to the show still show up today such as in series like Stargate SG-1.
On Tuesday, June 15, the movies came out on DVD for the second time. The first time was with the complete series. This was as a stand alone DVD. There are rumors of a big screen MacGyver movie to come.
Do you have any memories of this series? MacGyver was the first television series I can remember my parents letting me watch with them when I was little. We always watched it as a family. When Lost Treasure of Atlantis came out, we were at a family get together and someone found it on tv. We all sat down and watched it before heading home.
So is this topic on MacGyver or Duct Tape? I do remember MacGyver growing up. He alone can keep the MythBusters going for a full season+. One of the last episodes I remember watching was when he got knocked unconcious and fell into a dream medieval world. I remember he had frequent contests with Merlin, finally took a blast that knocked him out in the medieval world, and woke him back up in the real world.
As for Duct Tape, I have a simple answer for that. It has a Light Side and a Dark Side and it holds the Galaxy together.
Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.
MacGyver. Guess I should have come up with a better title for the SF. lol.
I remember that episode. There was another one where he was in the old west.
MacGyver! The theme music is running through my head now. I didn't watch it when it was originally on the air, but we have all seven seasons on DVD and I've seen almost every single episode. It was a great show. Some of the most memorable episodes involved recurring characters such as Murdoc, Penny Parker, Jack Dalton, the Colton Brothers, and Harry. And of course we can't forget MacGyver's boss Pete.

Really? That could be cool.

Oh yes, Good Knight MacGyver is one of my favorites.

Actually, there were two. The first one was much more memorable, though.
I love MacGyver too! I was always so curious to know what his first name was. When I found out I was like so that's his name! My family owns six of the seven seasons.

Ah, MacGyver! That brings back memories!
I don't own any of the seasons on DVD but some friends do. It's like old times watching some of the episodes. One of their kids likes to 'MacGyver' things around the house, using duct tape, string, and the like.
The series became well known enough that references to the show still show up today such as in series like Stargate SG-1.
The 'blooper reel' showing Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson, who was MacGyver) stuck on a glacier is a great example:
"...we have a shoelace, a belt buckle, and some chewing gum! Build a nuclear reactor...I'm stuck on a glacier with MacGyver!"
Incidentally, Richard Dean Anderson was born in Minneapolis, and MacGyver is supposed to be from Minnesota as well. I believe it's in episode 1.10 ("Target MacGyver") in which he returns to that state to visit his grandfather. But the scenery looks more like Southern California (where it was filmed) than the North Star State.
*makes note to borrow some DVDs for viewing*
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Ah, MacGyver...I've seen the grand total of approximately 1.3 episodes, and neither was a whole one. That said, the show looks to be a lot of fun and I'd like to watch more if I had the time. My parents are both fans of it and, humourously enough, my youngest sister is now quite the fan as well.
Question, though: What exactly does MacGyver do? My parents couldn't quite recall and I haven't seen enough to figure out---does he just go around and pick up packages/items/whatever for the company?
Some days you battle yourself and other monsters. Some days you just make soup.
Mac works basically as a freelance intelligence agent. He goes undercover in Communist areas (this all pretty much takes place before the fall of the Berlin Wall) in several episodes. Because he has a background in the military and science, he gets called in by people he knew from his past to help out in various situations. He also sometimes falls into them or has them fall into his lap (Jack Dalton anyone? ). Pete gives him assignments from time to time for the company and he does those. One was an "assignment" where he goes up to the mountains with some inner city kids for a week.
I guess you could say he's a jack of all trades.
MacGyver! I remember watching the series when I was a lot younger, and loved them. These last couple of years we have been watching some of the seasons from the DVD, and they are as good as before . MacGyver just doesn't get old.
I think that I prefer the first episodes to the later ones. The subjects are too much about nature conservation etc. and, frankly, it gets boring. The ones where MacGyver in on a dangerous mission somewhere....
The very last episode was a little of a disappointment to me.

Please note that this Special Feature will be closing Monday, July 5, after which please feel free to discuss anything MacGyver-related in the Television thread.
