Tom and Jerry. Bugs Bunny. Rocky & Bullwinkle. The Roadrunner.

These cartoons, and others like them, are the ones your parents (or even your grandparents!) may have watched as children. Thanks to recent movie remakes, cable reruns, and DVD releases, these classics are available now to a whole generation of new viewers.

Here's the place to discuss these classic cartoons. Tell us about your favorite characters, episodes, or humorous excerpts - and feel free to include other cartoons of similar vintage that I haven't named above.

Incidentally, I do have a fun memory of The Roadrunner from back in the early 60s - it was the first TV show I saw in color.

Thanks to starkat for suggesting this topic!

I love the old Tom & Jerry cartoons and they never fail to get me laughing. I watched them on TV growing up in the 70's and had no idea they used to be played before feature films at the movie theater. Personally I always pull for Tom because Jerry is a little trouble maker and instigator who starts the whole thing in action and Tom tends to get the short end of the stick most episodes, but either way it's a hilarious cartoon!

Tom and Jerry I love, along with most Hanna Barbera cartoons (Scooby Doo, The Flintsones, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear and Huckleberry Hound). I own many of these on tv, haven't completed some of the collections

The Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies-
I have all six volumes that are currently available (minus spotlight collections since those are just portions of the already full discs I already own). I love many of the episodes:

Corny Concierto is a favorite, bunch of famous books and there characters come to life in a library. There are several of these, but this one is my favorite.

I Love to Singa, Love that little owl!

Rabbit of Seville, with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. This is defiinitely among my favorites.

If I continue I probably won't stop: One Froggy Evening, not the best short but I love the frog and his singing. Famous today, but originally this was his only short- they tried making more decades later, non-canonical, but it wasn't the same.

Elmer Fudd I love, and to think he evolved from Egghead who was discontinued (not to be confused with Egghead Jr, a chicken, and nothing to do with the original). I love Bugs' different looks as he evolved as well.

One character I like a lot is Gabby the Goat which was also discontinued an whose shorts don't appear on none of the volumes. It's as if they are trying to erase him entirely, his shorts were all with Porky Pig, but some were later redone replacing him with Daffy Duck.

Porky Pig evolution was great too, his premiere was terrific. Was supposed to be a one time appearance but everyone loved him to so much be became the face of Merry Melodies.

Porky eventually made many cartoons until eventually he went duck hunting. and he went after the wackiest of them all, whose biggest moment was actually during the short end credits. This duck eventually became Daffy Duck, as his character was evolved HE became the new face of Merry Melodies. But that was short lived because he soon would meet a rabbit, yup- Bugs Bunny who to this day remains the face of this series. Prior to these 3 characters, there were no established characters, just a bunch of random ones.

Sorry for the story there ;))

Now to Disney, I love all his shorts that are available, and that's like 10 volumes, two discs each. With A LOT of shorts. As some may now Disney began with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, but he didn't have the rights to it and not having his own company yet lost him- and he later made Mickey Mouse. Mickey wasn't anything special, if you see the cartoons of the time he looks like many of them, but Mickey had something they didn't- Sound. Steamboat Willie was the first ever cartoon to have sound, which was a milestone for animation and so the legend began...

I love Pluto, Goofy and the gang. The Silly Symphonies are amazing- such has The Three Little Pigs and The Grasshopper and the Ants among them.

I really think I should stop now. I'll be lucky if anyone actually reads all this :p

I have the whole collection of Looney Tunes on DVD and absolutely love it! :D Every now and then I'll sit with a family member or by myself and watch a collection. Honestly they put a smile on my face even when I am gloomy. :)

I've not seen Tom & Jerry in a long while and miss them so much after getting rid of cable :(

I miss the classics!!! :(( They're never on TV anymore. I used to watch them all the time when I was little. Cartoons nowadays are just...bizarre. 8-|

I really love Scooby-Doo! (The original ones, not the new ones ) I was pretty much obsessed with it. I've probably got three or four VHS tapes of recorded Scooby-Doo episodes hiding in my basement somewhere.

I also really like Tom and Jerry, the Looney Toons, and the old Mickey Mouse cartoons.

Oh, and does Winnie the Pooh count as a classic cartoon? I grew up with Winnie the Pooh. :D

I recall fond memories of waking up after napping, sipping tea with bread and butter and watching Tom & Jerry. :D We used to (and still do) love those quite a lot. ^.^ I used to loathe Tom, but getting a cat has altered my standpoint a hint. Nonetheless, I'll give Jerry his props.
Looney Tunes was also a show watched frequently by us. I was infatuated with Tweety, so we have a collection of Tweety episodes now. ;)) (*cough* But due to the addition of feline species in our household, Sylvester must be pitied.) Bugs Bunny, Road Runner--- we loved them all! =]
I remember watching the cartoon superhero shows of Superman and Batman. All I remember of those was that the sidekick who was called Robin, or something, popped up in both. Anyways. ;))
And for Disneys, the adventures of Mickey Mouse and the rest provided ample delight 'most any day.

My favorite classic cartoon is Winnie the Pooh. :D I love that show, though I think I like it more now than I did when I was little. :P It's such a witty show.
Another favorite is Tom and Jerry. I remember I used to watch Tom and Jerry every day when it came on TV. That show always cracked me up. ;))
I know I used to watch Looney tunes, but I don't really have any memories of them.
I know I watched more, but I can't really recall which ones.

I really think I should stop now. I'll be lucky if anyone actually reads all this :p

Haha, I read the whole thing. :P Nice post, you're quite informed on all the old TV shows.

pogginfan, haha thanks for actually reading that post. I only really know about Looney Tunes and Disney, because I collect those and watch the special features. Actually a bit of something more:

remember what I said about Daffy being succeeded by Bugs? That is actually the basis for all the Daffy vs Bugs cartoons. ;))

Winnie the Pooh,
I love the old cartoons. I only the book lovers aren't all fond of it since it strays from the books but I've never read them. I used to watch it all the time. I actually wish they would sell them to buy, in a worth box set, not the toddler's ABC discs.

lol! I'm opposite, I loathed Jerry for the longest time and I still find the place in todays time to still loathe him. I've always for some reason felt sorry for poor Tom since he's the cat of the house and cats are mainly used in households to get rid of infested creatures like bugs and rodents, Jerry's a rodent as cute as he may be but still a wild mouse. For years I've been cheering for Tom to finally catch Jerry because I admittingly always thought the mouse with the loose string guitar was funnier (even though it was still mean of him to swipe Tom's whiskers off to replace his guitar strings, still it was done hilariously =)) ) to come on and replace Jerry. Jerry's a jerk, sorry but he is. :p

Honestly, I prefer cartoons that have longer episodes, human characters, and more complicated plots.

And while I like human characters, I like fantasy and sci-fi genres.

My absolute, all-time favorite cartoon is definitely Tom and Jerry! It's so funny that sometimes I laugh my head off, which would go great with all the other mishaps that appear in the cartoons :) When I feel like relaxing and having a good laugh, I watch Tom and Jerry! In fact, I think I'm going to go watch Tom and Jerry right now!

Winnie the Pooh
Tom and Jerry
Bugs Bunny and the gang
Woody Woodpecker
Popeye
Chip n Dale (and the subsequent Rescue Rangers series)
Ducktales
Anything original Mickey Mouse and gang.
Pound Puppies

Ok... so can you see I watched a LOT of cartoons when I was younger. ;))

Aravis Narnia, did you ever see the three part cartoon that they did on the novel Red Planet? I think that was in the early 90s. That was good.

Another one with good plots was Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego.

^ I honestly thought for a long time that Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego was just a collection of educational games for your PC. ;) I never thought it was an animated TV Series. I was always happy and excited to hear it was going to be turned into a live action movie and used to dream and pretend I was one of the teenagers from the games.
