[Closed] Special Feature: Bridal Boutique-Say Yes to the Dress

As a rule, I don't watch TV. I simply don't have time (and shouldn't, juggling multiple jobs and a degree program). However, during an extended family gathering last year, my great-aunt leaned forward, looked at me, and said simply,

"You know, you really should watch Say Yes to the Dress."
"What's that?" I asked.
"Its about weddings. Watch an episode, and you'll see."

That afternoon, I slipped back up to my hotel room, and downloaded season 5, episode 1.

I was hooked. The show is so much more than simply watching people pick out wedding dresses. For me, it is a study of interpersonal relationships, and great for examining psychology. And a chance to look at pretty (and absolutely horrendous) gowns.

Last night, season 6 premiered. I had work that evening, so I didn't get to see it, but am anxiously waiting to see it. I must say, iTunes has been my friend. I've yet to watch any of the Atlanta episodes, but will, eventually. :)

What are your favorite dresses? Interactions? Favorite consultants? Least favorite dresses, interactions?

EDIT: NOTE: Please post your pictures in link format, rather than putting the actual photo into your post. That way, we aren't risking putting immodest photos on (and some of those dress are not the most modest dresses in the world!). Thanks.

I love this show!! I like watching the reactions the girls and their families while picking the dresses, and (most) of the dresses are just plain gorgeous!

my favorite consultant is Keasha, I think shes the best! But I also love Randy(but he's not really a consultant is he?)

theres to many dresses to pick a favorite but my least favorite was in season 5...a pageant girl got this really short dress that just looked wierd!

I have no clue @ Lady Lilliandil! I have never been a fan of the short dresses for weddings myself, or those dresses that show your stomach....not very wedding-ish to me :P

one of the things I like to watch is all the alterations, when some of the women freak out over the tiny details that noone else would ever notice... I think I count my sister in that group actually :P

Kristi (the pageant queen) is an interesting person. I think she was really trying to top all of her different pageant gowns with her wedding dress--but I'm not sure that was the best route to take!

After I had watched that episode, one of my second-cousin's daughters watched it when she was bored. I asked her afterward what she thought of it. I found her comments very insightful: she mentioned how it was called a pretty design only because of its Vegas-showgirl qualities. As a good Catholic, she (in simpler words--come on, she's nine) explained how a dress like this generally shows an emptiness inside, and, while we may try to fill that emptiness with boys or clothes or awards, can only be filled by One greater than ourselves.

No idea if that applies to Kristi or not, but I thought it was pretty insightful for a nine year old. ;))

My favorite designer is Pnina, and one of my favorite dress happens to be this one.

The lace on the side somewhat bugs me, but the ruching/shirring is amazing. This has definitely gone into my cyber-book of favorites. I don't care for low sweetheart necklines, but this is definitely flattering--to me, asymmetrical designs always are. I love them. :)

Downside to this one, though, is the girl who bought it (Margaret), blew her budget. :( It looked amazing on her, though, and, like is pointed out by Randy repeatedly, there are a lot of other places where you can cut the budget to make up the difference. :)

I love that dress! the poofing from out of the flowers isnt my favorite though.. I cant believe she went so over on her budget I'd feel so bad if I did that!! I love the upper half I think its gorgeous, and she also wears it very well :)

Yeah, the poof is a little much. If it was just filling in the gap, it would look very well. With the rush fees and everything, she went $3,000 over her budget. There are definitely ways that you can cut 1 or 2k, but I think 3 would be harder to do. ;))

Several people (three of which have not posted in here *coughwontnamenamescough*), have asked me to analyze some of the dresses. So, I've come up with two Pnina dresses to contrast, and then located another one of my favorites, which is similar to Margaret's.

First, to compare and contrast.

I quite like Sarah's chosen dress. She's the bride that came to the salon before she was actually engaged, and unbeknownst to her (but knownst to us), her boyfriend had snuck in, and they had hidden him in Audrey's room, so that when Audrey brought Sarah in, he could surprise her. :) I like the detailing on this dress, and its overall softness. I don't normally care for tulle, but this design pulls it off rather well. Contrasting it with a similar dress, also by Pnina, shows why I prefer it. To me, this gown seems very hard, and unfeeling. It also illustrates why you shouldn't try on a gown that is more than you can afford--Daisy, this bride, tried it on because her mom pushed her to do it, and absolutely loved it...but it is a $10,000 gown, more than double her budgeted amount. She couldn't buy it because of that. :(

Finally, my favorite, from probably my favorite episode--Rachel's dress! It is in the last episode of season 5, and I love it. Instead of the flowers that Margaret's dress had, this has crystals. Her fiancé (now husband) is Paul Teutul Jr, from American Choppers. They actually put up pictures from their wedding.

Episode 18 was quite funny, with her trying on gowns upstairs, and the guys getting their suits downstairs. An energetic family, with good relationships.

So...I'm curious. Do you like Rachel's dress or Margaret's dress better?

Well, I thought I liked Margaret's dress, because Roses! Lace! Draping! :D

...But then you post Rachel's, and I think the simplicity of the dress works even better. :)

I don't watch the show, I can't find it online :( But I love the last picture you posted, LA (Rachel's dress). The draping is so pretty!

Mel, Val, if you want to look at the pictures from the show, you can see them here. Season 6 and Season 5 are on separate tabs.

Val, I don't believe you can get the episodes in full on places like hulu. You can view them through netflix, though, and Episode 1 of Season 6 is Free to download on iTunes right now. I just downloaded it a few hours ago.

Georgie, I know! I've always thought that crystals made a dress less simple, but in this case...they don't! It all combines for a very amazing look.

I find it interesting that all of the dresses talked about, so far, are from Pnina's designs. ;)) Thus, I've picked out a few more....

First, just so that we can see it, a dress that, in my opinion, looks just AWFUL! I just....there is something wrong with that. I think it may have something to do with the bows. ;))

I like the large, more detailed individual rose on Cherine's dress, as opposed to the multiple small roses in Margaret's dress. The skirt is nice, but other than than, nada. This family had an interesting dynamic to it. I don't think I've ever experienced a Muslim family like that.

Finally, I like the top half of Donna's dress. The bottom looks like it belongs to the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man's wife. ;)) Jessica, the consultant, for some reason, reminds me of Liv Tyler.

the first dress, I remember that episode, what was that lady thinking!!! that does nothing for her, that is absolutely horrid.

The second dress is my favorite of the three, a real natural beauty to it :)

the third dress I agree, I only like the top half the bottom part os a bit to much for me

I don't watch it because we don't have TV but I really would like to! I've seen commercials at friend's houses and it looks like a great show! I love googling "wedding dresses" and looking through all the pictures and dreaming what mine would look like one day. 8-}

Lady Arwen, I agree, that dress is awful! It's just too much! It's too busy and there's too much stuff on it. If it had just pleats or just lace or just roses or just bows or even two of the four, it'd be one thing but all that stuff!!! And, in my opinion, it's too lowcut in front to be classy and elegant. I think the dress is quite tacky actually.

I actually like the skirt of the first dress you think is hideous, Wren. It's very Southern Belle, and needs a bodice to reflect that aesthetic instead of the plunging neckline corset-top with bows. (Bows? Why oh why?)
