Welcome to the Special Feature for Adventures in Odyssey! We've had a few of these in the past, but it's been awhile so I requested a new one awhile back.
I received "The Official Guide" for a present recently and it is filled with lots of interesting facts and figures. So I thought I'd start this one off with a series of "Did you know..."
Did You Know...
That Katie Leigh, voice of Connie Kendall, has done voice over work for Darkwing Duck, The Gummi Bears, and Totally Spies!.
That Will Ryan, voice of Eugene Meltsner, actually plays the ukulele
That Alan Young, the voice of Jack Allen, was Wilbur in Mister Ed.
That Townsend Coleman, voice of Jason Whittaker, was the voice of the Tick in The Tick.
That Sage Bolte, voice of Robyn Jacobs, was finishing up a Ph.D. at the time of the printing of the book
That Danielle Judovits, the voice of Aubrey Shepard, plays Shadowcat on Wolverine and the X-Men.
That a large portion of the cast when asked what inspires them answered in part "their faith".
Tis interesting to see these facts behind the voices that we have heard on the radio for years. Did anyone hear the whole Passages series? I missed several of them.
What is your favorite episode? Who's your favorite actor? Do you have a memory that you'd like to share about Adventures in Odyssey?
I knew none of those, but funnily enough I was listening to a Winnie-the-Pooh episode in the other room earlier and the mother's voice sounded a lot like Mrs. Barclay.
How many Passages episodes are there? That's the one where Timmy and the girl go to the land with two moons and have a Gideon-esque adventure, right? I thought there were only two or three, and that I've heard them all, but...
One of my favourite adventures is 'The Last Great Adventure of the Summer'.

But our hearts we lost - how long ago! -- G. K. Chesterton
I used to listen to these when I was younger. I still have those American History tapes around here somewhere. I don't really remember much though...
I knew about 50% of those "Did you Know". I haven't bought the new guide yet, but I plan too. We used to have the old one but we read it so much that it's completely fallen apart.
What is your favorite episode?
My favorite episode, hm, how can I choose just one?????? I think I would say the Darkness Before Dawn album is my favorite. It's not technically an episode, but all but one of the episodes are connected so it's almost like an eleven part episode. Other favorites are: The Mortal Coil, The Search for Whit, and Pokenberry Christmas.
Who's your favorite actor?
My favorite actor is Paul Herlinger. But he retired. Which brings up the question, what do you think of the new voice for Whit?
Do you have a memory that you'd like to share about Adventures in Odyssey?
One time I had a bad sinus infection that infected my eyes. One Sunday morning I woke up and I couldn't see more than about five feet in front of me. Mom scheduled a doctor's appointment for me that afternoon. I remember her setting me up her and Dad's waterbed with our Adventures in Odyssey cassettes. I listened to The Underground Railroad. It was a great way to take my mind of my aching eyes and my upcoming appointment. I also remember many, many long car trips with AIO along.
Did anyone hear the whole Passages series? I missed several of them.
I heard them all. They were fairly good, but of course I already knew what was going to happen so that took away some of my interest.
Awww... and here I was planning on starting an AIO thread in March in celebration of the new season airing. Oh well, I was getting tired of waiting anyways .
Did anyone hear the whole Passages series? I missed several of them.
Yep. My siblings and I, being the impatient fanatic sort, just bought the whole series so we wouldn't have to wait . I enjoyed them, but didn't love them. They did get better as the series progressed though, which I was glad of since the beginning episode didn't "grab" me. The acting was amazing... at least the adults were... I'm not a big fan of the way the two actors played Kyle and Anna. They got on my nerves at times . But the adult actors were amazing!
And to answer your question Mel, we're actually taking about the audio series they aired this... fall, was it? based on the first book (Darien's Rise) in Paul McCusker's youth series called... Passages! They have the same idea behind them as the original Passages AIO episodes, but with different characters and a different Bible story.
What is your favorite episode? Who's your favorite actor? Do you have a memory that you'd like to share about Adventures in Odyssey?
Favorite episode? Impossible. I've been listening to AIO for as long as I can remember, though I only really started following the series during Album 37: Countermoves. Even my "short list" of favorites would probably be miles long! But... just for the sake of answering the question, I'd say that right now, two of my favorites has to be The Right Choice I and II . Favorite actor? Really tough. Will Ryan is pretty awesome, though! Memories? Tons haha, but I won't get into them all in this post.
My obsession with AIO ranks right up there with my Narnia fanaticism. I follow the news, listen to podcasts, and all that good stuff. What about ya'll? Avid fans? Casual listeners? Used-to-listen-but-haven't-recently? What are your feelings on the upcoming season? Do you listen to the Official Podcast? Unofficial Podcast? Who are your favorite characters?
EDIT:
Responding to daughter of the king's post...
Which brings up the question, what do you think of the new voice for Whit?
Errrr... . I gotta say, I was a huge fan of Paul Herlinger. He really was Whit to me, and I miss him terribly . At first I was absolutely furious and hated the new voice for Whit . After hearning him in Passages, though, I might have learned to accept it a little more. He sounds pretty good when he's narrating the series, but when he is just being Whit... he sounds goofy to me. What do you think?
"Oh telescope, keep an eye on my only hope,
Lest I blink and be swept off the narrow road.
Hercules, you've got nothing to say to me,
'Cause you're not the blinding light that I need.
For He is the saving grace of the Galaxies."
The new guy's (Andre....something?) voice is closer to Hal Smith's than Paul Herlinger's. And he sounds like Bruce Day's illustrations of Whit look--I always thought those drawings very very wrong and now suddenly they fit. Anyway, the new voice will take some getting used to...
My siblings are OBSESSED with AIO, I like it too but never have time to listen any more.
Favourite episode: maybe Telemachus or The Painting or A Perfect Witness; favourite character: Jared! Am also fond of the old Eugene, the one that actually sounded, you know, overly intelligent

I confess my exposure to Adventures is very limited...mostly to the series of videos that came out some years back.
Nevertheless, I have the pleasure of being acquainted with my own "Odyssey Official Guide" - the NarniaWebber Ryadian. She knows a lot about the show and I've let her know this thread is available for her comments.
She's also knowledgeable about voice actors. For example, a while back I obtained a DVD set of The Adventures of the Gummi Bears since it was described as partial inspiration for another animated series, Gargoyles. It was Ryadian who pointed out to us that "Connie is in Gummi Bears."
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
favourite character: Jared!
He's one of my favorites as well. For the past few days my sisters kept hearing my constant exclamations of "I miss Jared!" Because the last few reruns have featured him.
I also like Grady McKay. He's just so cute! I've wanted to hug him so many times, lol. His interactions with his sister are very endearing, and he kinda reminds me a little of Scrub, Rodney's cousin who was only in 4 episodes. Although Scrub was a lot younger, I think.
Did ya'll know there's a Wiki for AIO?
I've listened to AIO since I was 7. Haven't stopped yet I love the radio show. It's good clean fun and is surrounded awesome Christian principals and values that aren't preachy or cheesy.
Still not sure whether or not I like the new Whit. Hal Smith and Paul Herlinger were my Whits. Paul Herlinger more so. I didn't even know the difference between the two until I heard that Hal Smith had died in the "Behind the Scenes" episode (I think that was the one where they talk about finding Paul after Hal's death). But the new guy . . . there's a huge difference and I'm not sure whether or not I like it.
P.S."Brooklyn!"
What do you think?
I miss Paul Herlinger. The new guy(I still can't remember his name) does sound closer to Hal Smith, but he just isn't Whit. Maybe when the new season starts I'll like him more. It will take some getting used to.

I didn't know!

Ah! Thank you! I read most of the books back when they came out several years ago. I'm a "used to listen avidly, but quit somewhere between 'Search for Whit' and the end of the Novacom arc" fan, though I'll tune in for the daily show during the summertime when they're doing re-runs.

As opposed to the new Eugene who is... just plain strange. One of the last episodes I heard involved a running gag about how fast a comatose chicken would fly, or something like that and I could not reconcile the new Eugene with the old Eugene. Chickens cannot compare with "Howdy. How quaint. A shortened version of How do you do, or more correctly, how do you fare."

Gotta love that Eugene! But the old Eugene would never have worked up enough courage to marry Katrina. And they had to get married; they just had to. It sure took them long enough though.
No, the Eugene that was originally introduced on the show would not have been able to marry Katrina. I agree they had to get married, it would have been weird if they didn't eventually. I liked that Eugene had to grow up a bit before he could marry her. He didn't just become a Christian and then all was happy and he could marry her at last, but he had to mature in his faith too.
I even really liked the premise of the (I believe) first show that showed them married, the one in Africa. I just didn't care for the outcome of the subplot it started about Eugene's family, and the fact that Eugene had somewhere lost a bunch of his techno savvy. Yes, making paper airplanes out of the instruction manual was cool, but surely Eugene wouldn't have needed one in the first place...
(I would like to pretend that that subplot does not exist, thank you, since if that was Leonard Meltsner, I preferred him dead. So I quit listening and buried my head about the time they introduced the first hint of the 'forgotten relative'. Honestly, why didn't that show up when Eugene and Bernard were doing their research in 'Last of a Long Line'? Oh yeah, 'cause they didn't need him yet... )
I miss the character development of the early shows, I think. The new ones are usually so busy (three, four different threads going the same place when the older ones would have one or two) that they don't have time to do much more than present the theme of the episode at the end.

On the whole, I love "Adventures In Odyssey." In a culture which routinely flatters teenagers that they are wiser than anyone over the age of 25, it was a daring move for the Focus on the Family people to make their leading character an OLD man. But it sure worked!
I used to listen to them a ton. I've been to busy lately but I still like to once in awhile. I used to have License to Drive entirely memorized.
Another funny piece of trivia: Tom Riley and Bart Rathbone are both voiced by Walker Edmiston. He was so good he actually recorded both voices when the debated when they both ran for mayor at the same time. He didn't need to record them separately he just switched back and forth between voices.
