A week ago I had the pleasure of going to see Pacific Rim with my cousins. It was everything I wanted the film to be and can't wait for the DVD release.
The acting was solid enough with Mako and Pentecost (sorry, can't recall the actors names... ) easily stealing the show. The same goes for character development, though with a giant monster movie, one shouldn't enter with the expectation to get The Dark Knight level of character development. What we got was enough for the audience to actually care about the people in this world and that was good enough.
The special effects were WONDERFUL! Outside of a few instances of the CGI looking computer game-y, the special effects were simply flawless and probably the best I've seen in a long while.
The story was thankfully straightforward, and though cliched, rather enjoyable. The plentiful fight scenes were very well choreographed and filmed so that you could actually see what was going on and enjoy it. Michael Bay, take note.
Overall, a very enjoyable genre film and a truly fun summer flick. Highly recommended to all.

I was mildly interested in seeing Pacific Rim. Now I really need to see this movie!

@W4J I don't mind blood if it looks like it does in shaun of the dead.
august 23rd? It is usually Australia that has to wait extra, well that's what it was once like. I have nothing on next Saturday so I already decided I am going to see it.
It's not the blood that I have an issue with, it's more the intense gore. But in a humorous setting it's not too bad.

I've really had to laugh at the reactions to Pacific Rim. The people I thought would hate it, loved it, and the people I thought would love it were either 'meh' or hated it. I'm interested in seeing it, but I won't bother in the theaters.
I also found out that Red 2 is out in theaters. I don't know if anyone on here saw the first one, but I got quite a kick out of it. I'm kind of curious about the second one, but you know how sequels often go.
I saw the first Red, fantasia, and thought it was fun. I'm not so sure about the sequel either; probably will wait till it comes out on DVD.
The commercials for it have an amusing tagline however: "Finally a movie without monsters, robots, or superheroes." (paraphrased)
The trailers for Pacific Rim didn't do much for me, but like you I'm surprised at the enthusiastic comments from people I didn't think would like it.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
I saw the world's end last night. It was great, up to the good standard of the other two.
Last night I saw Pacific Rim. It's great sci-fi/action fun!
First, the not so good. The story is paper-thin (robots fight monsters to save humanity). I wasn't emotionally invested for awhile because the action felt hollow. Thankfully, it greatly improved upon the hero losing his twin.
Characters the world over pilot robots known as Jaegers to fight these monsters. There's even an Aussie crew and a monster that terrorizes Sydney (cool!). Every character here is archetypal but some are well-defined and interesting. Acting ranges from average to very good (Idris Elba and Ron Perlman are highlights).
There's a major Japanese feel to the whole thing. Pacific Rim recalls mecha anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion and the kaiju movie classics like Godzilla etc. The Kaiju (monsters) are well-designed, ugly and rather imaginative, as are the Jaeger robots (you'd expect nothing less from Guillermo del Toro).
The action has an almost operatic quality. Firstly, the Jaeger are huge enough but the Kaiju totally eclipse them in size (they have to be seen to be believed). Secondly, this movie is beautiful in its contrasts. It's incredibly creative, colourful and detailed. There are moments of loud confusion and moments of stillness and everything in between. Scenes take place on land, under the sea and in the air.
Pacific Rim is a passionate, enjoyable, sometimes funny, movie. It's an intense, destructive ride but strangely optimistic in this era of gritty nihilism and existential nonsense. The movie can be summed up in two words: Awe-some action.
Warning: Recommended for Mature audiences: moderate action violence and some mild language

I went to Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters at midnight, and it was such a cool experience! Seeing and talking to other Percy Jackson fans. And the movie was AMAZING! It was a lot more similar to it's book, unlike the first film, and overall was a much better movie, whether you've read the book or not. Although if you have, then it makes it even better because you pick up on random stuff and appreciate it a lot more.
People should definitely go see Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, but make sure you watch The Lightning Thief first, as hard as it may be to sit through.

Elysium was possibly one of the worst movies I have ever seen in cinema. It ha a really under developed story line and ended randomly.
Really? I've only heard very good things about the movie.

Has anyone seen the conjuring? I didn't think very much of it but it was good for jumps.

Indeed it was way too predictable and a sudden ending. The story wasnt great. The two friends I went to see it with said the only good part was the weird south african accent.
I loved the Conjuring. It was quite creepy and had a great back story. The fact that it was a mostly true story (according to Andrea Perron, who both exists in real life, and swears by her story). It had a good few good jump scares, but that's not really what I like about scary movies, though I do appreciate them. It had a gripping storyline, and really did mess with my head for a few hours afterward.
I also liked how they put in stuff about the Annabelle doll, even though it was hardly relevant to the story. Sets it up for a great sequel.
no longer active. every once in a while ill pop back for the memories. good to see a few recognizable names 🙂
I actually went to see a movie in the theaters for the first time in ages! There was a special preview screening of Ender's Game last night at our local theater. I think that it immediately became a contender for most accurate book-to-movie adaptation that I've ever seen. It was quite good!
My niece who might be one of the biggest Ender's Game fans of all time said it was "perfect" I don't know that I'd go quite that far, there were a few things that kind of bugged me, but if I'm being honest, about 90% of them were simply due to the fact that it could have used another 20-30minutes.
For example:
My other concern is that I feel this is a movie that will only really be appreciated by the book fans. I'm not sure someone who hasn't read the book will be able to enjoy it, again, due to the large amount of stuff they had to cut out.
Nevertheless, I really liked it. I especially liked the final climactic battle scene! That was perfect. So if you like the book, I highly recommend the movie.
