I saw The Amazing Spider-Man over the weekend, and I have to say I thought it was a much better film than any of Raimi's. The acting was all top notch, especially Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. CGI was great, and I loved how they used stuntment for a lot of the Spider-Man scenes instead of special effects, made it all look more realistic(well, about as realistic as that sort of thing can be). I didn't think the Lizard was a fantastic villain, but worked well enough for this first film. Probably the biggest problem this film faced was making it different enough from the Raimi films while still keeping the classic Spidey elements. I thought they pulled that off well with the redesigned suit, mechanical instead of organic web-shooters, and tweaked origin story.
My biggest problem with the film was the character of Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield's performance was amazing, but it just didn't seem like Peter Parker. Admittedly, I'm not hugely familiar with the comics, but I have read a few, and my take on the character is that, while he had his flaws, Peter was always a pretty clean-cut, nice guy who keenly felt his responsibilities. As a result, he was always second-guessing himself and wondering if he was doing the right thing. It's all part of his charm. Here, they've changed him to be more rebellious, moody, and a little on the self-centered side. It never seemed like he really embraced the "with great power comes responsibility" mantra, especially with the last scene where it's heavily implied that he intends to
Anyways, overall I enjoyed it. It'll be pretty interesting to see how the sequels will unfold: how Peter's character will evolve, what will happen with the storyline about his parents, and
Mark my words, someday I will think of something brilliant to put in my sig.
Josh, how is it the critics and many public reviewers say that Prometheus has poor acting and you say it was good? I know you don't praise movies if they don't deserve some kind of recognition.
I probably should have gone into more detail. The acting was good from the main characters (Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, and especially Michael Fassbender). I think there has been criticism from the acting of much of the supporting cast who
Winter Is Coming
Ah, thanks, Josh. That's a good way of putting it. I don't know that I'll see the movie in the cinema (I'm not good with blood and gore on the big screen, only on the little one) but I'll definitely catch it on DVD. Thanks again.

I am thinking of seeing "People like us". Has anyone seen it yet?
I saw The Bourne Legacy. It started out a bit slow, and at first I thought I wouldn't like it. I didn't understand all the references, since I have not seen the earlier films. But it got better and better as it went on, and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. If lots of character depth and deep themes is your forte when it comes to movies, this doesn't fit the bill. It's a pure action flick. But if you like action movies, you will probably love The Bourne Legacy. I definitely recommend it. Plus, Jeremy Renner was amazing. 7/10.

My friends and I are going to see "The Avengers," this Friday!
EDIT:
And it was awesome. I loved seeing the interaction between all those wildly different characters.
The glory of God is man fully alive--St. Iraneus
Salvation is a fire in the midnight of the soul-Switchfoot
Today I watched Hoshi o Ou Kodomo - Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below (a Japanese anime film). It was weird but enjoyable; a visual feast of world mythologies. The theme: coping with the loss of loved ones. All of the ingredients were present but it lacked a little 'something'. Also, the last half of the movie was too fast-paced. Overall, imaginative and worth a look.
7.5/10
Genre: Fantasy, adventure, romance.
Reminiscent of Studio Ghibli's works.
(Warning: rated M for Fantasy violence - subtitled)
Here's the trailer: Enjoy!

Wow, digging this thread up from the depths. I'm out of the loop on movies, but I noticed Wreck-It Ralph tore it up in the theaters this weekend. Did anybody go see it? Was it any good? It looked like a movie that wasn't great, but a lot of fun for video game geeks like myself.
@fantasia_kitty: I haven't heard of Wreck-It Ralph, what's it about? (Also--HI!

'...and there were some extremely disturbing moments that match the orignal Alien films.'
I know this movie (Prometheus) isn't exactly present anymore, but I have to say, I found it terrifying. As in, watch-through-your-fingers-scary, which I certainly did. To be fair, I hadn't been to the cinema in over a year, and perhaps it was some sort of sensory overload I couldn't handle, but I was actually the scaredest I've been in a movie, which is pretty funny actually. My friend on the other hand (who grew up watching the Alien films) didn't even bat an eyelid, but she must have nerves of steele because I was on the edge of my seat the whole (disturbing) time. Creepiest movie I've ever seen , and the moral of this paragraph is never listen to the teenage boy at the ticket counter when he recommends a good movie because you were too late to catch Snow White and the Huntsman.
On another note, I saw Argo last week (with the same friend, and again neither of us had researched it so had no idea what it was about) ...and it was really excellent. There's a fair bit of swearing but once you get past that the script and acting draws you in completely. It is more like a docu-drama then a movie, but if you're into long, drawn out suspense and a bunch of history (also bad hair and 70s glasses), it's really very satisfying. I mean, who doesn't like a bit of de-classified CIA stuff?
I was surprised though to see it was produced by Ben Affleck and George Clooney- they were very smart about the whole thing and I'd like to see them work on another movie.

I really want to see Argo. Maybe on my next day off.

Great to see you, StudyMate! Thanks for your comments about these movies. Argo is one I'm considering seeing when I need a break from NaNo.
fantasia, I've not seen Wreck-It Ralph (and I don't know anyone who's seen it yet), but a video game/comic book fan I know had an impression similar to yours.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
FK- I haven't seen Wreck-It Ralph yet... but I want to. (in all honesty, I might not see it til it's on dvd... knowing my luck with finding people to drive me to movies )
However, I did think you'd want to see something a friend of mine said about it. Hope this helps!
Sure, your kids will like Wreck It Ralph. But if you are like me and grew up in the 80s, you will love it. I can't remember laughing so much at a movie in a long time.
What he said, made me want to watch it more. (though, I had to laugh a bit... "grew up in the 80s". he was born in early 1984! but yeah... I guess that counts? eh, close enough )
Matette, good to see you back!
The aforementioned film is about a character in a video game... and... I'd explain it poorly. So, here's the trailer for your convienence:
I'd say more, but I don't know too much about current movies. So, I guess I'll see you guys later?
I've never understood the notion that you can't be born and grow up in the same decade. I was born mid-year in 1983 and I consider myself an 80's kid. Sounds like a decent movie but the trailer did nothing for me, so I'll probably wait to watch it on DVD.

Oh, I consider myself being both an 80's kid and a 90's kid. That said, I don't remember too much from the 80's... unless you count the end of them! (I was born fall 1983, and was around 6 when the 80's ended) So, I never really knew how to classify myself. *shrugs*
Now, to make this post on topic, I looked up what's playing at my local movie theater...
Is it a bad thing that I've only heard of (at the most) five of them? The only ones I remember seeing previews of for sure... are Wreck-it Ralph and Hotel Transylvania. (I blame still watching disney channel )
Hi stargazer, lovely to see you! Not to sound too presumptuous, but I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy Argo if you get the chance to see it.
princessanna, thanks for the trailer and the hug. I think it looks cute, if a little strange, haha. I wonder who comes up with the ideas for Disney/Pixar films? They're very, uh, unique. I haven't seen the trailer at all in theatres yet, it's probably being set for the Christmas holidays here.
Hotel Transylvannia looks good, but not must-see-in-theatres good. I kind of wish Disney would do another fractured fairytale, a la Tangled.
