I saw Hugo yesterday morning,
The beginning- might be slow, yes, but I loved every moment of it. Beautiful score! I do think the movie was a bit slow around the middle, but never boring. As for humor, I can't really pinpoint any of it- I didn't really find anything humorous in it, again not boring though.
The movie's art direction was superb. As was the score, as I mentioned above. This is a movie for movie lovers, as it deals with the preservation of movies. It's a movie for all ages, but besides the "pretty colors" younger kids *might* be bored with it.
I loved the movie. More than what I initially thought too. I knew I loved it, but it had stayed with me more than what I thought it would. I kinda want to see it again, but must force myself to wait until it releases on Blu-ray.
Heeey, I also saw Hugo today
It was definitely a really sweet movie. I was a bit surprised because I figured it'd be a kids movie and all, but there was a big group of young adults in the theater The costumes/sets and music were awesome. I also liked how it gave a good background of early film.
I agree with Ithy, that it did start a little two slow... it could have been a little better if it didn't take as long to get to the main title.
As for a book adaptation, it was wonderful They added quite a bit of other stuff, but I thought it was mainly there for some cute depth. Like in the book, the station inspector and the woman with the dog were only mentioned a couple times, but they had their own mini-subplot. I think rarely it kinda made you loose focus from the automaton/Melies plot, but I didn't really mind because of their really adorable ending That, and I kinda found it sorta off that

You should check out the book, Riella. The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I got it for my sister a couple years ago for Christmas because the illustrations were gorgeous and it seemed like a good book. She fell in love with it and is super excited to see the movie. I'm taking her for her birthday. I really like Asa Butterfield, so I knew I would see it as soon as I knew he was in it.
I don't really like how they changed The Invention of Hugo Cabret into just Hugo. I think it takes away from the true main character of the story: the invention.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing it. Anyone who does though, should check out the book. It's written in almost a moving picture way, with much of the story told in just illustrations. (Beautiful illustrations).
P.S."Brooklyn!"

I'm surprised you two feel that way, I really am. I thought the opening sequence was one of the most beautiful moments in the movie. For me, I felt as if it could have continued like that without me tiring of it.

It seems they changed the title, to get it "out the mouth" more easily. But the focus is still there, very much! I've never read the book, but if the invention is the most important thing in the book- then they kept true to it.
I agree with Ithy, that it did start a little too slow... it could have been a little better if it didn't take as long to get to the main title.

Well, I wouldn't say that it was *too* slow in a bad way... most of the intro felt as if I were on a nice carousel ride or something, and then the main title appeared. It just felt a little weird to have the main title (especially since it didn't have "the invention of" in front of it) or they had it too far into the movie.
And yeah, after I read the book I was sad that they cut the title down just to "Hugo." Having the full title is a little lengthier (but not by much!) but it adds the feel of an old movie to it which i always thought was a nice touch

Oh yeah! That was another thing that bothered me. I was sitting there, feeling like I was a good way in, and suddenly this sign comes up that says, "HUGO". Odd place to put the title. Maybe they want to keep us on our toes.

I think they should have kept the old title as well. Especially since that's really what it's about. I haven't read the book, but even the movie itself shows me the original title is a better fit. I mean there was such a connection between

I'm hoping to see Hugo this weekend! It's getting fantastic reviews.
Saw The Muppets opening day. Fun and clever music combined with a good story. I thought they did a great job of combining nostalgic moments while successfully introducing the Muppets to the current generation. If I had to compare it to movies of the same purpose, I would say it is lik Toy Story 3, not the Smurfs or Yogi Bear. Many fun cameos as well. Best Muppet movie by far since Jim Henson's original trilogy.
I haven't read the book, but I really enjoyed Hugo last night with my friend.
The performances alone by its young actors, to start with, were amazing. Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz I shall give the credit to. Also in it that we may recognize are Christopher Lee and Ben Kingsley. The children, especially show a lot of realistic emotions. Their acting was a lot better than many young stars in my opinion.
Now the story. I think this part has some flubs. It was an interesting story, really, but I wish it hadn't dragged on at times. I got a little bored at a few points. But what I liked about this that many family films lack nowadays is depth and complexity. Most children now, sadly, are used to movies like Alvin and the Chipmunks and such. It's really nice to have a film that makes you think.
Beautiful soundtrack on a side note.
Strange thing that I noticed is how some shots reminded me of LWW, such as a wardrobe of a sort, a boy walking through a bunch of statues in the snow, and a close up of a lion statue...
My recommendation: See it. You don't see many family films like this around anymore.
@Lou Hey, thanks for that info. I think I may try and go see this one...
I few days ago saw Arthur Christmas It was a great movie I have not seen Hugo but I want too!
The Hobbit in theaters: 14 December 2012
I think Arthur Christmas looks kinda 'cute' as some would say, but Hugo looks a little more like the action type. I'd be willing to see either.

Really? I would've said that Arthur Christmas looks like a comedy/action/adventure movie and Hugo looks like a surrealist drama exploring movie history, with some comedic moments. But nothing suggests it's an 'action movie'.

Doctor Who - Season 11
Yeah, despite what the trailer looks like, Hugo is faaaaaaaaaaaar from being an "action movie". There's no action in the book and the film is more of a drama than anything else. It's exactly how Warrior 4 Jesus described it: "a surrealist drama exploring movie history."
It's a gorgeous movie, and I wasn't bored at all while watching it. I'd recommend it to everyone. But it is not at all an "action movie."
P.S."Brooklyn!"
I was not saying exactly an 'action movie', and am finding myself in a hole trying to explain. I do that a lot.
I would LOVE to see it, though.

Yay - I think I'm going to see Hugo on Monday! I'd never heard anything about it (though I'd heard *of* it) before a few days ago, but from what I heard, I'll really ant to see it. I'm excited!
