I saw X-Men yesterday and don't know what to say... it was AMAZING!.....Did anyone notice Bill Milner from Son of Rambow as young Magneto?! He looks very different now!
I just saw this movie tonight and I was looking out for Bill Milner. He is for sure looking different now but was really good with the small part he had in the movie as the young Magneto. I mainly went to see James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender though and they made the movie for me with their acting. I have not seen any of the previous films and don't know any of the history. Also interesting seeing Nicholas Hoult as Hank....last time I saw him he was the little boy opposite Hugh Grant in About a Boy.

Aww yes...Nick Hoult was great as beast! I would recoment the other films, especially X2, it is deffinately on par with X-FS but I think personally X-FS was better

Being a Pixar fan, I went to see Cars 2 today and was in the minority obviously.
After seeing the trailers, I was kind of excited but not expecting much, but I was hoping it would be a good movie. I disliked the first one when we watched it for the first time, but we watched it recently and I love it to pieces now, so I was hoping that the second would still be nice.
Overall, I'll give it a 2 and a half out of 5. I enjoyed the spy atmosphere and stuff, but the explosions felt overdone. I feel, also, that the movie lacked heart and feeling that characterizes Pixar films. Because, in all the Pixar films, I've found, there's always something to cry/get emotional about, whether it's the toys about to burn up, a beloved character dying, a car going back and giving up a prize... this one didn't have that. It was sad many cars disappeared, but I don't know...it just lacked that.
The score by Michael Giachinno was undoubtedly good, as was the animation. At least Pixar maintained that.
For the moive, it felt unthorough, rushed, and lets-just-get-this-sequel-done.
Oh well... I hope the Monster's movie will be better.

Well, since I've heard only bad about it, you're review gave me a little more hope. I think I'll like it, though like Cars, it won't be my favorite. I'm going to see it this afternoon, then I'll be back and write my own review!
And yes, I'm hyped about Brave, and Monsters Inc 2.

Just got home from Super 8,
I thought it was very enjoyable. Made for a pleasant watch. Very well done, except maybe the last five minutes
7.5/10 from me
Super 8 looked good when I saw the advert in the cinemas at XFS, so I might go and see it based on the comments on here...
Also, has anyone seen Jane Eyre with Mia Wasikowsi (?) and Michael Fassbender yet (in America)? I heard that its gonna be really good and read on IMDB that its out already in America but I live in England and its not out 'till SEPTEMBER here (love that story!) ... Just though I might ask!

Just saw Cars 2 yesterday! Having really liked Cars 1, I've been looking forward to this for a long time! I loved the characters and the uber creative way they made the cars seem alive. Pixar just shines in that area, making non-humanoid things look and act human in a believable way. Cars is a wonderful example.
So! Here's my review:
As everyone knows, the main reason people go see a sequel is to see the characters they loved in the first film again. Pixar has a history of doing this quite excellently, mainly the Toy Story series. So naturally, I've been comparing the original character development in Cars 2 to the development in Toy Story 2 and 3.
In TS2&3, something happened to the gang that made them learn something and moved them forward in their development. Pixar also introduced vivid, lively new characters that fit in so snugly with the originals that they could have been there the entire time.
In Cars 2, I'm sorry that say that there was very little of that. The old characters were true and the same, thank goodness. However, the film was mostly about Mater, though McQueen was still essential to the story and had multiple scenes all to himself. But what was more bothersome than the shift in main character focus, was that they didn't "learn" much. Perhaps you'll disagree with me if/when you see it (or if you've already seen it), but it was pretty obvious what the message was supposed to be. And yet, I didn't feel that it was any ground that had not been covered in the first film. Somewhat different, yes. But nothing truly new. Also, I think most people would very much benefit from seeing the first Cars before seeing Cars 2. It seems to me that if you didn't already know the characters, you would have a harder time emphasizing with them. Maybe not, but that's rather how I felt.
The new characters felt, well, a bit shallow. Frankly, the only major characters added were secret agent cars and the movie focused a good deal more on their gadgets (which were admittedly pretty cool ) than their characters. I'm very sorry about that.
One thing I can say confidently though: The new characters were not developed very well, but it was easy to imagine there was much more to them than you were getting the chance to see. All is not lost for the new characters.
The animation was, as usual, superb. There were moments where the scenery literally took my breath away. All the different places in the globe they go to were incredibly detailed and gorgeous. To see everything "Cars-i-nized" was loads of fun!! You'll even catch glimpses (and maybe sometimes more than a glimpse) of famous people "Cars-i-nized". Too clever!
You may have heard the folks at Pixar say "you'll see cars do things you've never seen them do before" and that is absolutely true. I feel like they built off of the marvelously creative animation of the first film and just expanded it. Some of the "moves" made me grin with delight and IRL I'm not a car person.
My main problem with the film was with the plot. The plot was... Very strange, for a Pixar. It seemed to lack depth, for the most part. Many of the plot twists felt strangely "raw", like a first draft of a story. The potential was there, but something was missing.
But on the other hand, I kept recognizing key elements of a 60s spy film and it made me smile. Many of the twists one would usually consider "cliche" were actually so common for a spy film that you could hardly have a vintage secret agent movie without it.
My theory is that in this film, they weren't going for a "deep" movie. It seems like they were spoofing a spy movie through and through. It's still Cars, and it still has a Cars feel to it. But it's also a spy movie, with tons of explosions (which I did not think were overdone, BTW ), disguises, mad scientists, cool gadgets and (of course) cocky secret agents, good and bad.
Overall, the plot had the feel and twists of a 60s spy movie mixed with the feel of Cars. Not a bad thing IMO, but not normal for Pixar. Not normal at all. But all the humor of a Pixar film was there, and the special brand of humor that is Cars was there too. I won't spoil any of the moments for y'all who haven't seen it, but suffice it to say, if you laughed at Cars, you'll laugh at Cars 2 as well.
For you soundtrack enthusiasts, you've probably noticed that Cars 2 has a different composer. I actually usually like Micheal Giacchino better than Randy Newman anyway, but I always feel hesitant when a franchise switches composers. However, I felt that Giacchino did a wonderful job. *is actually listening to the soundtrack right now*
I have most of the Newman Pixar soundtracks and his music is good, but honestly, he doesn't differ much in the films. It's pretty obvious pretty fast that "oh, this is a Newman score". Yes, John Williams is the same way. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But for this film, I think Giacchino was the better choice. With all the exotic locations, he managed to pick up the flavor of all those places in his music, while keeping the original themes and adding new themes, most notably the "spy" theme (which was quite stuck in my head when I walked out of the theater ) and STILL keeping the Cars feel to the whole thing.
In short, I was impressed with the soundtrack. I don't know if I'd call it a masterpiece, but it fits the movie quite well and is very enjoyable. That's enough for me.
All in all, I felt that Cars 2 was an enjoyable film; lots of fun, very funny and quite creative. There were no tear-jerk moments, no huge character development (on old or new characters) and no big furtherance of the character's situations. But I liked it anyway. I keep thinking to myself "that was so much fun!" Perhaps part of the reason I wasn't very disappointed is because the film turned out much like I expected from the trailers, the TV spots and the sneak peeks I got a hold of. Or, maybe I wasn't disappointed because Cars 1 wasn't a film that really spoke to me in the first place. I enjoyed it, but not in the same way I enjoyed TS and WALL-E. If the first film wasn't about cars but was about their drivers, I probably wouldn't have cared for it much. As it is, the overall experience is very novel and enjoyable.
Maybe that's the key to the Cars franchise. You don't watch Cars to be moved. You watch Cars to have a good time. If that's all you want from the film, Cars 2 won't disappoint.

There is no such thing as a Painless Lesson
Cars 2,
I just got home from watching it. It was an enjoyable watch, though I agree with the many- it is not Pixar's greatest. Possibly their weakest yet, but not because it's a bad movie, it's just that it lacked what makes a movie a great one.
Not much else to say. Lady Courage basically said many things I would have said. I'd give it 7/10.
Haha, Elanor, I'm surprised you saw it positive! I kind of did not like the movie, but I guess I'm sort of half-half about it.
I agree with you, Lady C, that it was not a deep movie, which disapppointed me because Pixar does deep and great, no matter what. This felt definitely more Disney-influenced. (not that I don't love Disney, but their sequels tend to be.eeehh.)
For the violent imagery, I did not mind very much but I wish there was more heart and character in the movie to compensate for the shallow gunshots and missle firing. Another thing, most of the audience was between the ages of 3 and 10. In that age group, especially the younger ones, I'm concerned what they would understand. (At a few years older than that, I did not catch that all the old, evil cars were oil company owners.) Even though it was not a deep spy movie, it would still be puzzling to a young mind. And what do they catch? Usually jokes and action. When there's a whole lot of explosions and violence, young boys (and the immature older ones) usually desire to imitate that and become more rambunctious than normal or necessary. (I'm a little concerned what some little boys in my AWANA group will be like after watching Cars 2... ) Anyways, that's just my twopence.
I, too, enjoyed the music change as far as the orchestral pieces went, but for the songs with lyrics that they played, I feel like Randy Newman picked a nice selection with not too much of one genre. ("Real Gone," "Life is a Highway", "Sh-Boom"!)

I must say, I have NO idea why everyone seems to review Cars 2 badly. I think it was top notch; better than Cars 1, though not as good as some of the others. I was not at all disappointed, and in fact, was pleasantly surprised. I think people don't like it because it doesn't have the emotional depth of some of the other Pixar movies; I missed that too, but the hilariousness and beauty of it made up for it. Animation was top notch. It was by far the funniest pixar movie I've ever seen; and like all of their, the humor is worthwhile, and not dirty.
I loved it, and I heartily recommend everyone to go see it!

I'm waiting in line for Transformers: Dark of the Moon right now!
All the IMAXs are having a special showing today at 9pm!
I Can't wait!

I was wondering in Cars 2, did anyone notice the "Gastow's" when the cars were in France, as a nod to Ratatouille's Gusteau's? I was looking for the Pixar specials in there. John Ratzenberger was conspicuous, but I didn't find the Pizza Planet truck or Hidden Mickeys...

how was the short film in front of Cars2??? I heard that it was Toy Story related... that was enough to tempt me into seeing the movie in theaters (but i probably won't)

It was really cute, outi; as all of them are. It wasn't as good as some of the others, but I liked it. I'd forgotten about them having a short, and when my sister whispered that it was coming, I got so excited!

I saw Transformers: Dark of the Moon at midnight (the 9pm showing got messed up)!
It was Incredible!
The Best visual effects I have ever seen!
The 3D was unbelievable!
This is by far the best Transformers yet!
Its hard to say exactly what it was, but the film just seemed so much more superior to the first two!
The story was great, the action was intense!
It was an incredible film in my opinion!
I thought the acting was great!
Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus Prime is as always perfect! Leonard Nimoy as Sentinel Prime, Shia LaBeouf and Patrick Dempsey I thought did a really good job. And I thought Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was much better then Megan Fox.
It was the perfect summer movie in my opinion. I can't wait to see it again
