Having also seen Scott Pilgrim, I'll also vouch for it. Production-wise, it is top-notch, and I love the whole video-game-style gags as much as the next geek; the other bits of tongue-in-cheek humor aren't bad, either. As for the romance and the whole "message" angle, it actually wasn't bad, finding itself somewhere above average (which is much higher than I can say for where I expected it to be...).
Fun fact: there were actually two alternate endings that were considered for the movie. One of them, where Scott ends up with the girl he didn't end up with in the actual movie (of the two girls in the last scene, that is), was actually filmed and will be on the DVD release. The other one... was more of a joke twist ending, in which

So the movie "Flipped" finally had a decent expansion at theaters and so it hit a location near me, with its limited release. It was supposed to happen on Aug 27 but was held in platform release for a while longer.
I thought the movie was fantastic, it's based on a book of the same name- which I haven't read. The leads, the two kids/teens, were terrific in their roles. The story was great.
^^ funny thing about that: I had never heard of that movie until today when I saw a movie cover of the book at the library.....sue me, I didn't get it out. but now that you said it's good, I am curious!

If I may say, without spoiling the movie. I loved the narrative! We get to see the same events twice, but it works well. First from the boy's point of view and then from the girl's point of view. Which in some cases makes the story funny, to see how the same thing could mean two different things for each of them- girls and boys do have a different way of interpreting things
But sometimes it does make the scenes sadder when you get the other point of view. I highly recommended.
PS. there is one very short scene of suggestive humor, it's in the trailer too. But it lasts all but five seconds, if that! The movie is rated PG.
I finally got around to seeing Despicable Me this weekend and really enjoyed it. It seemed pretty light-hearted and didn't take itself too seriously.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Last night I saw Tomorrow When The War Began. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie was a very good adaptation of John Marsden's book about ordinary Aussie teenagers who have to survive and evade the enemy when Australia is invaded by outside forces. (Movie #1 based on Book #1 of a 7 book series).
Pros: uniquely Australian, good drama, impressive old-school action (very little CGI) and suspense, some good laughs, great scenery. Cons: some dodgy acting, an awful blue-screen moment at the end, some undercooked character development and a double-take on an action scene towards the end (why?). Recommended for people 15 years and over due to moderate violence, some language (God's name etc.) and mild drug references. 7.5/10
It's great to see an Aussie movie that isn't a comedy, nor an angsty drama. Tomorrow is doing quite well at the Australian box-office. Anyone here familiar with the books? Has the movie made it's way overseas yet?

I'm not familiar with that one...it sounds like an Australian version of Red Dawn, sorta. Who's invading exactly?
Kennel Keeper of Fenris Ulf
Oh boy, this movie seems to get a lot of comparisons to Red Dawn. The premise is very similar but the actual stories are very different.
The invading force are never specified but they're referred to as a Coalition and it's implied that they're Australian neighbours, probably from Asia.
Personally, I thought they were from Indonesia (gone bad).
The movie is interesting, in that we visually see the invaders' faces for a bit but they're Chinese and Japanese, wearing strange uniforms, flying European planes and arriving on European boats. It's not for a lack of research but to avoid xenophobia and more primarily help people to realise the identity of the invading force doesn't matter so much, as how the teenagers deal with surviving the war, their friendships and romantic relationships. There are six more books in the series. If all goes well, they're opting to make two more movies and then the last four books into a TV series.

Yes Liberty, I noticed that in the Book thread. You should try reading the rest of the series too. They're very good. I don't know if the movie's been released in the US yet, but they're planning on an American release.

Just got back from seeing Ben Affleck's The Town. Amazing movie and definitely one of the best of the year. Smartly written, great direction, and excellent acting.
I've never questioned Affleck's directing abilities (Gone Baby Gone is also a must see), but I've never been a fan of his acting. However, he is very, very good in The Town/ Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Jon Hamm (TV's Mad Men) also shine, and Blake Lively is unrecognizable. I wouldn't be surprised if come awards season her name is tossed around for a Best Supporting Actress nod. Chris Cooper also makes a memorable cameo appearance playing Affleck's character's dad.
The film is paced perfectly, with lots of action, but also some very good character moments sprinkled in. Affleck really is an actor's director, getting excellent performances from all involved.
The story is gripping, with never a dull moment. Much of the story is a game of cat and mouse between Hamm's FBI agent and the group of bank robbers lead by Affleck and Renner, and it's exciting to see the back and forth between the characters.
Great movie, 9.5 out of 10
good to hear, bkey, about The Town, I've been hearing some good things about the movie. I actually want to see it.
Today however I was "forced" to watch The Last Exorcism. Thankfully it was PG13 so they could only go so far, but it wasn't really much of a horror. It was definitely more suspense/thriller.
All in all, not my usual type of movie. I'm not a fan of these types of movies at all. There was much about the movie I didn't like, like how they handled Christianity, but it also wasn't as bad as I feared. I won't see it again though.
EDIT: I saw The Town tonight. I agree, it's a very well written/directed/acted movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I give it 8/10 stars.
I want to watch Like Dandelion Dust...love the book and the trailer looked good.
