^^yes I guess I should probably still read the books, I shouldn't judge a book by it's movie..er um trailer/review :p

greenleaf23: yeah music I guess isn't a big deal but I'm really picky about what kind of treatment my ears get and I don't wantto submit them to unnecessary torture :p

Reading your post Rising_Star makes me think I really should've read the books again before seeing the movie...I rushed through so fast a year ago I forgot most of the details I completely agree about Grover though...and to think I thought they "got him" when the first pictures came out.

^^yes I guess I should probably still read the books, I shouldn't judge a book by it's movie..er um trailer/review :p

Haha! Yep, everything Rising_Star said is completely true, they're really good. The last books are even better than the first IMHO. (I think I went through all of them in a week to 2 weeks...yeah, they're really good :P)

I agree with you there, but I guess it depends on how much they play. If it's just a short ten second clip I'm ok, and if it's in the credits, well, I can leave :P But I can deal with it in the movie (I'm kinda guessing that may be the background music in the casino...) I've always had selective hearing :P

Ok so I have the first book out of the library. I like it so far, but I'm still not sure how much I'll like the movie. Anyway I saw this

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters is scheduled for release in 2012. The film is an adaptation of The Sea of Monsters, the second novel in the series.

so I guess maybe they're making a second movie after all...although wikipedia isn't the most reliable source...

It really depends on how Lightning Thief does theatrically. They planned to do Eldest after Eragon but it didn't fair too well. I still haven't read the books, but I was impressed enough with Lightning Thief that I might check out the sequel. So we will see what happens.

Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,

I just got back from my showing, first off let me say I thought the book was excellent and hoped the movie would be successful enough to greenlight the next. and so on...

I enjoyed the movie, it entertained which is what it's meant to do.
It falls short of LOTR, Narnia, and Potter (and yes I know everyone is sick and tired of the comparisons). Some of the changes from the book weren't entirely bad, but most were. I didn't like how they changed Grover, he's supposed to be shy- not a playboy. I don't mind when they change characters, if at the end it's supposed to bring about a lesson, (such as Peter in Prince Caspian), but changing just to add some scenes, how should I put it- with sexual references- that I don't like so much. [-(

Also, in the hotel with those cookie things that caused them to hallucinate,
sure it was funny, but I didn't like it either. They do have such a place in the book, but no drug or sexual references were ever involved. I understand they needed to tone it up a bit since they aren't 12yrs old like in the book, but rather 17yrs old or so- but a different approach could have suited just fine.

And it was a given quest by the gods, not a disobedient act that led him to take it on.

All I say is,
if there are to be sequels, I'd prefer it not be from this one- and that's a shame because I actually liked the actors in the movie, young and new along with the older and more experienced. I'd prefer they wait some years and just start over.

So I started reading the first book...I like it :) . My mom is going to see the new Celine Dion movie when it comes in theatres, which I don't want to watch. Do you guys reccomend that I watch Percy Jackson or just wait til it's on DVD and Netflix it so I don't waste my money ;) :- ?

I'd prefer they wait some years and just start over

that's how I felt after watching Prince Caspian the first time :p . Maybe it'll grow on you, although from what I've read, you have good reason not to like it...

Whenever I go to the theater, I always go to a daytime showing. Not only is it much cheaper, but at least in El Paso, the crowds are much smaller. Percy Jackson opened up Friday, and I went to a 2:15 showing. There were only a dozen people in there. When I got out two hours later, there was a good sized line for it. This is how I avoid obnoxious talkers and teens on cell phones (talking or texting) and makes the movie much more enjoyable.

I haven't read the book, so I can't compare the two. Is it worth it? It depends on what you're looking for. The acting is better than most fantasy films (IMO on par if not better than Potter, at least the first few), and I will say that Grover was the weakest one. Logan Leerman as Percy was the best lead actor in this genre. (Narnia and LOTR don't have one lead actor/actress. They have more.) And yes, I liked him more than Daniel Radcliffe (Potter), Ed Speelers (Eragon), and several of the other fantasy genre films I've seen. I will even say I liked him better than William Mosely, but he won't beat Skandar on my list. Action was really good for the genre as well. Sword action was better than average, but not standout awesome. Script needed work, but it wasn't terrible. Some lines worked and some simiply didn't. Graphics and effects worked thier purposes. Nothing was cheezy, but I wouldn't compare it to LOTR, Narnia, Star Wars, or Avatar (which I haven't seen) in that context. It's a good movie, but at least for me, it's a one-timer in the theater. Based on what's out right now, (and I mean right now) this was the best option. I've already seen Book of Eli, and the others just don't get my attention.

Maybe I'll watch it. I still have to convince my mom to let me go to the theatres with her, she doesn't usually let me watch movies by myself and she needs someone to watch my younger siblings :|

I think you summed it up perfectly FencerforJesus! :) That's exactly how I felt about Percy Jackson.

The books are better, Fencer. ;) :P I can tell that already, and I haven't seen it yet. For one thing the character of Grover is very endearing. He's one of my favorites. Which is one of the reasons I'm so disappointed that they made him into a playboy.

The first two books are a little "childish" I guess you could say, since the characters are 12 and 13 respectively. But they're still fun. Percy has a great sarcastic sense of humor. From the 3rd book (Titan's Curse) onward the books grow more serious. The last book is my first favorite with the 4th and 3rd following as close second. If you like Greek mythology, sarcastic humor, and a lot of action, then you'd probably like the books. :)

That said, I'm going into the movie tomorrow with very low expectations. Every fan of the book who has seen the movie and reviewed it has been disappointed on a lot of points. A couple can't figure out if they like it or not. A few did like it, but not the changes made to Grover and Persephone. (Their reasons were much like mine in my previous post.)

So, yeah, I'm going to take it with a grain of salt and see how I feel after that.

(I always try to go to a day-time showing as well. It's cheaper (but not by a lot unfortunately), and yeah, not so many people. :P Unfortunately tomorrow is a holiday, but I'm hoping most of them will be going to see Valentine's Day or something like that. :P ;)) )

EDIT: After further research, I'm under the impression that those who have seen The Lightning Thief and have NOT read the books liked the movie a lot. Those who saw the movie and HAVE read the books, have qualms about it. Most hate it, some are unsure, few like it.

So yeah, I'll just have to see what my sisters and I think after we see it tomorrow.

I saw Valentines Day yesterday! Its really good, sweet and really funny!

Its kinda like the Movie- He's just not that into you- where like theres all the different relationships going on and they all somehow know eachother. But its really cute. It has an amazing cast with so many stars, its really awesome.

I would mostly likely suggest this for teenage girls, and maybe moms too. Guys...maybe, I think you'll like some of the funniness

Well, I saw the Lightning Thief today! With a friend who has also read the books, which was lots of fun. It was a good movie, not the best adaptation though. Both me and my friend agreed that if we hadn't read the books we would've loved the movie. (actually it was kinda funny, we'd be whispering comments about the movie compared to the book the whole time ;)) )

The special effects were nice (I really liked how they did the hydra and Medusa, they both looked great (special effects-wise) especially the hydra) the sword fighting was pretty good (there were occasions where you could tell it was a rehearsed fight. Well, I guess it was a rehearsed fight, but it's not supposed to look that way :P) the acting was much better than I expected though, great job by Logan Lerman (despite the age difference, I loved him as Percy). I'm with Fencer about the score, I really only noticed it a few times but it was nice when I did.

All in all I really enjoyed it, it was a really fun movie (there was some good humor they added in with Grover, even with the changes they made to his character) and I'll probably end up buying it on DVD eventually. Now for some of the changes...

Spoiler
I didn't really like how they changed the plot so that they had to find the pearls. I liked in the book how monsters were after them constantly, and that's why they ended up where they got too. Changing that also made them cut out the St. Louis arch scene, which I always liked. Also it was kinda weird how they totally cut out Dionysus and the Oracle. I can kind of understand not keeping "The Mist", it gave them some humour moments, but...I don't know, it made things a lot more complicated for Percy and the gang. They also didn't have Ares or Clarrise in the movie at all, which I was pretty disappointed about. The other thing I was disappointed about was that Percy didn't send Medusa's head to his mom, and therefore she didn't turn Gabe into stone. It's a pretty stupid thing to be disappointed about, but oh well. Although I was incredibly happy they kept in capture the flag! That's one thing I loved that they did at Camp Half-Blood, and I was so happy they kept it in :D
I'm planning on reading the book again soon, so I'll know better what was and wasn't in the book.

Oh, and Glenstorm, they only play those songs for short clips (the ACDC song for about 9-10 seconds, and Pokerface for about 30 seconds, and I didn't even hear the other one) I really think you'd like the movie though, especially if you're reading the book now :)

@greenleaf23: Actually they did show

Spoiler
Gabe turning into stone. You just have to wait for some credits to pass first (like in LWW when they showed Lucy and Professor at the end). There is a note on the fridge that says: Don't Open, so Gabe opens it and the last thing you see is Medusa's head in the fridge and her eyes light up. :)

I can't believe I missed that! ~x( Gah, now I'll never leave a theater again until the credits are over.

Oh, and adding on to my other post, I also didn't get the

Spoiler
Gods turning humanish thing. I made me think of the Ents going treeish :P

I missed that final credit scene too.
I would've liked to see it. and

I gotta admit, effects wise, it was great. I'll have to rent the movie when it hits DVD to see if I warm up to it though. While entertaining it was also disappointing, but I also did what you never are supposed to do:

read the book so close to the movie. I finished book Saturday night and Sunday afternoon I saw the movie.
