Hi Everyone!
First off, Moderators, I’ve checked, and I don’t see any topic quite like this, but if there’s a better place, or something like that, please let me know! Thanks.
For school, I’m going to be writing a paper on Macs vs. PCs, especially in regards to what Graphic Artists/artsy people would use. I was wondering what you all thought, and I would LOVE your input!
So, I have several questions:
1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers?
2. What kind of computer do you own?
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why?
4. If you make graphics (avatars/signatures/wallpapers/etc.), what program do you use?
5. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why?
6. Any other comments, opinions, etc. that you have in regards to computers...
Extra Question: Since this is a Narnia forum, I thought someone might know the answer to this question as well: What kind of computers did they primarily use to make LWW, PC, and, if anyone knows...VDT?
Thanks everyone!

I only use PC. Not because it's better, but because a lot of programs I use don't work on Macs. My uncle, who is a computer programmer, uses only Macs. PC, I hear, breaks down more. So it depends on your situation. Check too see if the programs you use work on Mac. If so, get that. If not, you don't really have a choice but to get PC.
Oh, and one more thing (this one's just for fun) --

1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers? Poor, very poor. To put this into perspective, I am currently typing with one hand, partly out of laziness, and partly out of lack of experience.
2. What kind of computer do you own? Dell Inspirion, using Windows 7 (It's purple too )
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why? I love mine, its a bit bulky, and occassionally has some issues, but it's great. My only problem is I can't make accents without copying and pasting them.
4. If you make graphics (avatars/signatures/wallpapers/etc.), what program do you use? Mostly GIMP, but I use Paint and Word sometimes too, some of my best works use a combo of two or three.
5. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why? PC!!!! Macs are way to complicated for me. They have both at my college, and I've tried using the Macs, but oh I never get very far. I think Windows is easier to learn and figure out by trial and error.
6. Any other comments, opinions, etc. that you have in regards to computers... It's amazing to look back and see how far the technology has progressed, and most of it was in my lifetime!

1: Depends on the software program. I can install printers, update drivers, and calibrate video cards. Photoshop's a program I've spent a LOT of time with. However, operating systems are still a mystery.
2: Family owns an HP Desktop and I have a Dell laptop
3: I would prefer something with a better video card due to my graphics/photography work.
4: Adobe Photoshop CS 4
5&6: In regards to PC vs. Mac... I've used both. I despise iMacs. Both of them that I've used have a tendency to freeze up and require a reboot via the power button. However, I have used G4 and G5 Macs at college and they worked wonderfully.
Our first PC had Windows 3.1. My dad and my uncle then proceeded to build every computer we had after that up until my dad bought the HP desktop because of the hardware requirements I needed for college.
Both types of computers have their good points. Both have their bad points. I like neither one over the other, but I prefer PC because that's what I am most comfortable with even after a year and a half of working on a Mac. It's no longer a matter of which one's better, but a matter of what hardware is in the box. There are more viruses written for PCs, but most of them can be avoided with proper antivirus protection and regular maintenance. Same thing for Macs. It all depends on what you need the computer to do.
I work with graphics and photos fairly hardcore. I've used Macs and PCs and years ago, the PC hardware was behind the Mac. That's not the case anymore. So these days, in my opinion, it's a matter of what software you need.
About the Narnia question: I'm pretty sure the movie industry runs on Mac due to alot of the top end video software being Mac only.
1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers?
My abilities are very advanced on the outer scope of computers. I know how to use them really well. I have no idea how to program them though.
2. What kind of computer do you own?We have an iMac and a PC in our house. I usually use the mac.
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why?
The mac I use is really fast and doesn't crash. I like the Windows interface better, but when I'm not trying to meddle with the computer itself and am just using an application, I like the mac. Although PCs may have gotten better since ours was made...our PC is several years old.
4. If you make graphics (avatars/signatures/wallpapers/etc.), what program do you use?
I use Final Cut Express and then just take a screenshot. I don't know how to use fancy photo editing software.
5. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why?
6. Any other comments, opinions, etc. that you have in regards to computers... I have heard valid arguments that Macs are better, and valid arguments that PCs are better. It really depends on the situation, budget, and programs you have.
Extra Question: Since this is a Narnia forum, I thought someone might know the answer to this question as well: What kind of computers did they primarily use to make LWW, PC, and, if anyone knows...VDT?
I don't think it really matters...the more interesting question for me is what editing program they used. Final Cut is Mac-only, but Adobe Premiere is cross platform. I know they used Maya for much of the computer modeling and effects but I think that's cross platform as well.
1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers?
Not great I manage to bumble along I guess.
2. What kind of computer do you own?
I have a MacBook Pro.
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why?
Very pleased, it's the best computer I've ever had. I think it might be smarter than me.
4. If you make graphics (avatars/signatures/wallpapers/etc.), what program do you use?
I used to use Photoshop for that sort of thing, I now use it mostly for illustration work.
5. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why?
For me, Mac's are the best (I'm an illustration student). I hadn't even used a Mac before and am generally rubbish with computers, but I figured this one out really quickly, so I don't buy the 'Macs are hard to use' argument. The general layout and efficiency is much better. It hardly ever crashes (and when it does, it's only because I'm naughty and don't shut it down for weeks on end )
I guess for someone who just wants to browse the internet and that sort of thing a PC would be fine, but I couldn't go back to one now.
I imagine they use Macs in the film industry, and they're the standard for the animation industry as far as I know.
Edit - some thoughts on the price of Macs. Firstly, Apple give students a VERY good discounts, I saved about £700 on mine! They also give you programs like Photoshop at a much cheaper price, I think I paid £50 for all the Adobe programs and then some word processing ones, etc. Also, while it was a bigger investment at first, it's so far lasted longer than any PC I've owned, so I've actually saved some money in the long run. I've got an 8 year warranty on it too, so I don't have to pay for any repairs. It took some saving (and no Christmas or birthday presents that year ) but it's proved to be a very good investment.
There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in.
1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers? pretty good, I took the computer science class last year in 8th grade, but that was mainly Microsoft 2007 stuff...
2. What kind of computer do you own? A Dell desktop, pretty old but completely wiped of old files a while ago, so its still pretty fast
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why? I would rather have a laptop because they're more portable, but my moms ipad is pretty cool, except for id never figure it out XD
4. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why? PCs, because they're compatible with just about everything out there, and although you can download windows on a mac, it takes up a TON of space on your hard drive
Extra Question: Since this is a Narnia forum, I thought someone might know the answer to this question as well: What kind of computers did they primarily use to make LWW, PC, and, if anyone knows...VDT? Probably a PC because theyre generally easier to work with, but they might have used macs or even a mixture
no longer active. every once in a while ill pop back for the memories. good to see a few recognizable names 🙂
1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers?
I like to think I'm pretty good with computers...there's still a lot to learn, but I certainly know a lot about how they work, and I'm usually able to figure out programs/tutorials well.
2. What kind of computer do you own?
Dell Inspiron 1525, with Windows Vista
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why?
I'm pretty happy with my computer...I mean, it doesn't cause me a lot of problems and it works well for what I use it for. I do wish it had more memory and hard drive space, because I had to buy it more memory and it still doesn't run fast enough to edit videos very well....
4. If you make graphics (avatars/signatures/wallpapers/etc.), what program do you use?
I use Photoshop Elements 7 - it's a great program that has many of the features of the full Photoshop at only a fraction of the cost. No complaints with it!
5. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why?
I guess it really depends on what you're using it for. I know business-type people tend to prefer PCs, while Macs are better for creative-type work. I know I'm going to end up getting a Mac eventually because I plan on attending art school, and they like people to have Macs. But thankfully I can get a student discount for that.
Extra Question: Since this is a Narnia forum, I thought someone might know the answer to this question as well: What kind of computers did they primarily use to make LWW, PC, and, if anyone knows...VDT?
I don't know for sure. If I have to guess, I would go with Mac because most video software runs on there, but they probably used PCs for the business part of it. But that's just speculation, really.

Oh fun! A survey!
1. How would you rate your ability on and with computers?
I know my way around decently well... mostly just from experience from having to do it, though. I have no idea what is going on or what the terms are for what I'm doing, but I do it!
2. What kind of computer do you own?
I run Windows 7 on a Mac through Bootcamp.
3. Are you pleased with your computer, or would you rather another kind and why?
Macs do not give you the best bang for your buck. They are certainly stylish, light-weight, and nice looking, but a lot of the money you are paying for is just because of the brand name. I personally bought a Mac because I use Snow Leopard for certain applications along with Windows 7. Since there are no emulators for Mac's Platforms on Windows, I decided I'd drop the extra cash on a Mac so I could have the best of both operating systems, since every Mac comes with Bootcamp, which allows you to run Windows on it.
4. If you make graphics (avatars/signatures/wallpapers/etc.), what program do you use?
I don't do it very often, but when I do, I prefer this application named Picturesque, which is on the Mac.
5. Do you have an opinion of what kind of computer (in general) is the best? Why?
There is no over-arching best for everyone. It really depends on what you're going for, and what you like. However, Windows 7 is over-all superior in my situation. I would not have said this when Vista was out, but Windows 7 is awesome.
6. Any other comments, opinions, etc. that you have in regards to computers...
Extra Question: Since this is a Narnia forum, I thought someone might know the answer to this question as well: What kind of computers did they primarily use to make LWW, PC, and, if anyone knows...VDT?
It's not really Mac vs. PC, it's more of Snow Leopard vs. Windows 7. Unless you want to know which computer gives you the most powerful hardware in your computer for the least amount of money, and that would be a PC.

Wow...thanks everyone! All the answers so far have been great! I really appreciate it. Anyone else? I'd like to get as many opinions as possible, even if your view has already been stated. Oh, and by the way, some of you who have answered have raised some more issues for me to look into. Thanks so much!
Thanks again!
