I just rewatched J.J. Abrams Star Trek and Oh Man, is that movie Awesome!
I've never seen any of the old trek films or tv shows so I can't vouch for it's faithfulness to canon though it felt very "Trekie" to me
The cast is amazing, there is so much chemistry between the actors. The pacing and action sequences are masterful and it's very funny.
Really looking forward to Into Darkness and the new Star Wars!
I'm not a Trekkie but I enjoyed aspects of the movie. Far too much lens-flare though!

I couldn't agree more! I love J.J. Abrams' Star Trek! Before I saw the movie I really didn't know anything about Star Trek, but I've been watching the original TV series on TV lately and I really enjoy them.
And yes the casting is fantastic, spot on in my own opinion.
I'm re-watching it in the next two weeks before I go see Into Darkness!
I also plan on watching both Iron Mans and The Avengers again before I see Iron Man 3 this coming week! I can't wait!
I'm not sure if you remember Warrior 4 Jesus, but about a year and a half ago you suggested "The Devil's Backbone" to me after I had watched Pan's Labyrinth, well I finally got around to watching it a couple of months ago and I wanted to Thank You! I really enjoyed it!
I have been trying to watch more of Guillermo del Toro Films that he has either directed or produced. So far I have seen: The Devil's Backbone, The Orphanage, Don't be Afraid of the Dark, Pan's Labyrinth, and Mimic. I want to see Mama when it comes out on DVD if it is any good.
Has anyone seen Cronos, if so is it any good?

Hey, no worries, mate. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I didn't think much of Mimic, thought The Orphanage was good but more sad then scary. I haven't seen Don't Be Afraid of the Dark yet. Cronos is a clever take on the vampyre genre but it's a small horror comedy/drama film, so don't expect big set-pieces.

Yeah I thought Mimic was ok but nothing special.
Thanks for the info on Cronos, I'll be sure to keep that in mind when I get around to watching it.

Mimic is more of a movie for "creature feature" fans, in which case it's actually pretty good.
As a "regular" movie, it's decent and a fun little monster flick. The acting is pretty good, special effects decent and the pacing is nice and steady. A solid 2 1/2 out of 5 in my book... 3/5 if your a fan of this genre.

Prince, your rating system is odd. 2.5/5 would be a very average movie in my book. I don't mind creature feature movies but Del Toro was constrained quite a bit by the studio. You can tell.

Oh, most definitely. Yet the film is still rather enjoyable and thus I give it an "average" rating. For me, 2 1/2 is middle of the road with 3 and above being good to excellent.
I guess it just goes back to everyones rating system is slightly different than the next persons.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me anything about the film Michal Collins, with Alan Rickman & Liam Neeson? There's a playlist of the film in parts on YouTube

Glad you liked the movie! Has it gotten you curious in the rest of the franchise? If so, and you have questions, there are a few of us that would be excellent to ask. Off the top of my head, there is: me, stargazer, and Shadowlander. (but I know I'm leaving a lot out. we have several "Trekkies" or "Trekkers" here )
Now on to your comment about faithfulness to canon:
I don't really remember TOS very well, I haven't seen as much of it as other ones. And what I did see was ages ago. (someone to ask in this case, would be Ithilwen)
What I do remember, however...
1) I got excited about all the little nods to fans
2) How spot on a lot of them were to the original actors (especially Bones)
3) certain things TOTALLY throwing off canon... not just for TOS, but for TNG and beyond! Things which throw me off and upset me so much
What you should know...
The 11th movie, in terms of "faithfulness to canon", should only be compared to the three seasons of Star Trek: the Original Series (aka TOS); as well as to the first six films. (though one or more of the TOS characters are known to make appearances on TNG, and in the first TNG film) Because those are the ones on which the J.J. Abrams (aka the 11th) was based off of. Those are the ones with Kirk, Spock, and Bones. Hope that helps!
And believe it or not, this was a small Trek post for me!
.............
I'm sure there have been movies I've seen since my last post in here. And even ones I saw around that time, and forgot about. But I'll have to stop in and talk them over with you all later. I wouldn't have come in now, except I saw Trek mentioned and couldn't resist.
Princess Anna, It has sparked my interest a little. But from what I've heard the new films differ greatly in tone from the originals. So I probably will check out some of the older movies sometime, but I doubt I'll ever get into the series. But who knows, I'm a geek at heart so once I start watching I might not be able to stop
I finally got to see Les Miserables. I'm a HUGE fan of the musical and I was dying to see it. But to be honest I was a little disappointed .
The pacing really put me off. The film just flitted between songs with very little to connect them. And this was exasperated by them cutting out portions from over half the songs. I know they did it to shorten the run time, but the film felt extremely rushed a lot of the time.
And also the cinematography was very inconsistent. Some of it was amazing, while at other times it was just plain awful.
But it wasn't all bad. The cast was great. I even thought Russel Crowe did a good job. His voice did falter once or twice. But I think his deep voice was perfect for Javert and his acting was perfect.
And a lot of the songs are so great they couldn't ruin them if they tried.
In short I liked it and I hope it brings the musical more fans. But I think with a different director it could have been phenomenal.

If you're talking the TNG films, then yes, they tend to be a tad bit more...what's the word? Polished? Professional? The TNG and post-TNG series were largely all like that. TOS is definitely in a category of its own because it's far more adventure than the series that came after it. Not that the TNG stuff is bad, boring, or anything else (Season One was definitely filled with duds though!), just that the characters were a little too...perfect at times? Geordi's engine room is all spit and polish and professionalism at all times. Scottie's is run like a tight ship, but he's willing to jury-rig something if it needs it and then to go knock back a few pints of scotch in the rec room right after. Geordi would probably go to his room and read poetry or something. There's nuances like that that make the shows (and their subsequent movies) so very different in flavor.
Soooo....how does the new Star Trek stack against the TOS shows? It's really quite wonderful actually. I think all of the various characters do the originals justice, although Karl Urban so wonderfully nailed DeForrest Kelley's Doctor McCoy that I'm half convinced DeForrest's spirit is standing next to him in scenes and clapping him on the back. I think Abrams gets the basic qualities of each character right...Kirk is very daring and brash, confident and willing to take risks. Spock is calm and collected, always adhering to Logic while the rest of us know that his Human emotion also helps guide him into the beloved character he is. Bones, a critical part of the Trifecta characters of TOS, brings common sense and good homespun humor to the role, and he and Spock's constant arguing with one another is a wonderful addition. The first 6 movies really have that magic about the cast that makes the whole ensemble really work well together. These guys are all great friends and you can tell it when you watch an episode or the movies.
About 10 years ago they took the old Star Trek TOS episodes and redid the special effects so as to modernize them. The end result (in my humble opinion) really completes the show. Some episodes are going to benefit more than others, of course, but overall the entire series looks better and is even more rewatchable than ever before. Rent em' from the library or watch on Netflix. It's a great show and worth the time to watch and enjoy!

It's been nearly 3 monthes since I last posted in here, just about forever. Last Friday, the other big kids and I watched Enemy At The Gates. I have never seen a movie that had that much dirt and grime in it. I thought it was pretty good. I am quite sure that Scarlet -who actually watched the whole movie start to finish- will not be watching it again, she didn't like the sniper shots.
I hoping to watch either The Bourne Legacy or The Hobbit this weekend. We have had both DVDs for almost 2 monthes and haven't yet watched either. I want to watch The Bourne Legacy and my brother wants to watch The Hobbit, but it is up to Dad which movie we will watch.
We are planning to go to the library, if it's available I'm going to get The Original Nancy Drew Movie Mystery Collection: http://shop.tcm.com/detail.php?p=307304 . I have never read any of the books, but I love old movies and I think my siblings and I will enjoy the movies.

I hope you enjoy those Nancy Drew films, SA! It's been a long while since I've seen them, but I remember them being quite funny, if sometimes ridiculous.
Some days you battle yourself and other monsters. Some days you just make soup.
Just reading your comments on the original Star Trek Shadowlander. I must say you nailed the whole character of Scottie. I am lousy about episode names but two scenes spring to mind. the Trouble with Tribbles, when Kirk orders him to take shorleave, when all he wanted was to stay in his quarters and read engineering manuals. Then, after fighting with klingons he is confined to quarters as punishment.
The other was when he was trying to get some device from an alien who's race had taken over the ship. In order to do this he got the fellow drunk, even breaking out his secret stash of scotch. A classic scene.
