AslansChild, I’m not very good at explaining plots to people online, so here’s a link to the wiki page for Black Hawk Down. It’s what is called a guy movie at our house, which usually means the girls don’t watch it. But Dad said we could watch BHD with him and my older brother this time. We haven’t gotten to finish it yet. I’m hoping we can finish on Friday, but I think my older brother doesn’t want us girls to watch the rest of it now. Which is kind of funny since about a year and half ago he asked me if I want to watch with him, I told him no at the time because I wasn’t ready to see it.
I watched The Young Victoria once in November 2010. It was pretty good, nothing bad in it. But I thought it felt slow, considering that it’s only an hour and a half. If it had had some action in it, it might have been better.

Okey-Dokey NarniaWebbers, thank you so much for all you info and responses!
I'd like to try The Young Victoria soon, and maybe the King's Speech. BIG maybe; but I'll look for the book sometime, johobbit - thanks for telling me that little tidbit.
Thanks also to Ithilwen & wolfloversk on the info on Lewis. I've never read a book on him, I mostly just know the very basic facts about his conversion, and a little on his childhood and such. Not his marriage...(don't hurt me! )
As for SnowAngel...Thanks for that on BHD. I've seen quite a few "guy" movies: Gladiator, the A Team, Saving Private Ryan, Rambo movies, etc. But I've never seen that. Sounds interesting though. Hope you get to finish it! By the way, I ADORE your avatar.
Okay, has anyone seen "Becoming Jane"? I saw a trailer for it when it came out, it looked sweet. But - I saw a different trailer, and I thought it had bad stuff in it. Thoughts?

I have seen Becoming Jane, I enjoyed it. I can't remember it being too bad. However there is one scene I clearly remember which leaves very little to the imagination. It's quick, but it will bother many- I myself didn't care for it.

You're welcome. I love Gladiator, it's one of my favorite movies. That reminds me it's about time to watch it again. My brother loves Saving Private Ryan, but I have never seen it, unless the clips he's shown me count.
I really like your avatar too. Christy is one of my favorite shows and ForeverFan's avatars of it are awesome.

I've seen Blackhawk Down, and it is a thoroughly excellent and yet equally unpleasant movie. I do not know how accurate the film tries to be, but my understanding is that parts of it are very close to what happened. I have a great deal of trouble watching it. I was in the Air Force back in 94' when the events of the film happened and I remember the Somalis dragging dead US troops around in the streets on the evening news, and this is portrayed in the film. Another focus is the real life insertion of two US Delta Force operatives to defend one of the crashed Blackhawk helicopters from an approaching mob of Somalis. The two were by themselves and held off the crowd...and it was one of the most stunning displays of personal heroism and courage I have ever witnessed. It is portrayed perfectly in the film. I don't like to watch this movie because I know that when I get to that point I will cry, and I don't particularly care for crying if I can help it. Even so it's an excellent film, one of those I think a person really ought to watch at least once in their lives. It is by no means for the faint of heart, so be forewarned.

I watched a really good Sci-Fi film from my youth last night. Enemy Mine (1985) starring Dennis Quaid and Lou Gossett Junior is set in the far flung future in a different part of the galaxy. Mankind has expanded throughout space but things run afoul when they attract the attention of an alien species known as the Dracs and war ensues. William Davidge (Quaid) is a fighter pilot on board a huge space station who scrambles to intercept a Drac raid and ends up shooting down a Drac fighter over an uncharted planet. He crashes himself and sets out to find the Drac pilot so as to finish him off. Through a series of events the two eventually learn to cooperate with each other to survive the harsh climate and dangers of the planet and after a time become best friends. Ultimately Davidge may provide the key to peace between the two species.
It's a really fun film that I'm reasonably sure most folks would probably enjoy. The special effects are dated in several places...at one point Quaid looks like he's trying to hunt Muppets for dinner, and the ships are obviously models (although I will still maintain that the human fighter ships are elegant and slick looking to this day!). There's some language in the movie but not much so it's one I think most here might enjoy if they can get past the dated special effects. Great movie and a great story!

I saw The Matrix Reloaded a little while back, I had been wanting to see if for a while after I first saw The Matrix(That movie totally blew me away!).
First and foremost it is an action film, not much else happens beside the action but the fight scenes are so well orchestrated that the the underwhelming storyline is forgivable(The time where Neo fight Dozens of Smith clones is incredible). The special effects are amazing even though the movie was made about 10 years ago
All in all if you love silly action films you love this but if you want a deep compelling storyline you might want to look elsewhere.
I really liked the first Matrix film, but the other two seemed a bit...I dunno, silly, compared to the first one. I agree that the special effects were amazing, but the first film had both a good storyline and good action scenes. It's amazing how after The Matrix almost everyone had the nickname Neo

Has anyone watched Cinderella Man (2005) starring Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger? If so, how good is it? It was recommend in the college history class my brother recently took, so we got it from the library on Sunday, but haven't watched it.

I just watched "Hugo" last night. is there a nice word for ewwwwwwwww!?
no offense to anyone who liked it, but that movie was creeeepy plus, IMO, most of the backrounds looked rather fake. the visuals reminded me a bit of The Polar Express, only with real people. the worst thing was that the first 30 minutes had no explanation at all. I was honestly rather bored through the whole thing and I don't think I'll be watching it ever again

Liberty Hoffman,
Sorry to see you didn't like Hugo, I don't know what you were expecting. Creepy? how? The machine? I honestly didn't see anything creepy about it. I actually think it was one of the best movies that 2011 had to offer. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. It won 5, all technical awards- which is oddly enough one of the things you complained about.
Personally I loved the movie. I own it on Blu-ray. I bought the book, which I'm currently reading and loving as well. I even bought the Score in Nov. It's an amazing movie, IMO.
Has anyone watched Cinderella Man
YES! That is one of my all time favorite movies. Russel Crowe is awesome as Jim Braddock, a down on his luck boxer who makes a surprising comeback. It's very touching, and it has some great boxing scenes. And Paul Giamatti is incredible as his eccentric trainer-agent. So I would definitely recommend it.
Liberty, I haven't seen Hugo (yet) but nothing in the trailer suggests a horror movie, even a thriller. It looks like a family adventure with something to say about cinematic history. I don't think you understood the movie. People have different tastes. It's obviously very well done, I guess it's just not too your liking.

Warrior 4 Jesus: okay, sorry if I wasn't clear about how I felt about "Hugo" - when I said 'ewwww' I didn't mean that I took it as a horror film. I simply don't like the feel of the movie, if you follow me. I didn't like how everything seem a bit fake and I honestly didn't like the 2 lead kids and that automaton writing figure that Hugo drags about creeped me out and I was constantly finding similarities between Hugo and The Series Of Unfortunate Events...
just my two cents

We watched Cinderella Man over the weekend. It's really good. If it hadn't had so much language, we probably would watch it with my younger siblings. I will definitely watch it again.
We also got Herbie Rides Again for the library and watched it on Friday night. It's one of my favorite old Disney movies. It's so much fun to watch.
