I watched a movie/tv program called Collision on PBS the other day - well, the 1st half. It was two hours, and we only found out at the end that there were 2 more hours. DANG. I won't be able to see them, and it was really, really exciting and interesting. About a crash, and a detective who comes to inspect it (something like that . . ) and all the people in it have these secrets, and it was so cool!! xD There was some language, but not disturbing, and some blood but that didn't bother me - it was just blood.
My favorite thing about it was that EVERYONE had amazing english accents. xD

I just watched "The Secretariat"...
I can't believe that it was so horribly put together IMO the opening line when the main character quoted the Bible was totally awesome and I was sure that it would be awesome after seeing that bit. but then the plot proceeded to make no sense. it all started too quick and went to fast and the character development left much to be desired. I was lost to the plot the whole time and I was bored. my parents fell asleep halfway through and my sister and I stared at it in the same way people watch a car wreck: it's horrible, but you can't look away
just my two cents....

I think Secretariat means more to actual horse-loves who know the story of Secretariat and know what's going on from watching the horse race and knowing the background of his story. My mom and sister LOVED it, but they're big horse people/riders and know all about Secretariat.
P.S."Brooklyn!"
Wow narnian_at_heart, I feel your pain. I haven't seen that movie before, but it does sound truly cliched and awful.
I've had to endure through a bad Christian oriented movie during youth group in the past weeks, plus the cheesy lessons that tie into the movie. The movie is called To Save A Life.
To Save A Life is about a high school student named Jake Taylor, who is the all star basketball player who has recently lost a friend to suicide, and he must ultimately change his life after he joins a Christian teen group and sacrifice his dreams.
*sigh*
First off, I am a young teenager myself, and I am tired of movies portraying teenagers like they do in these. Do the filmmakers even know what most teenagers act like? I won't get into detail, but it's just annoying and offensive to me.
Second, the plot and script was just plain cheesy. The acting was just awful as well. Did they just hire these people off the streets to act or something? There were several attempts at humor, but even that failed to make me laugh.
Third, I don't even like the tie in lessons this film has to offer. They're just a bunched of cliched messages that I'm not getting anything out of.
In short: Do not watch unless you want to endure another movie with offensive teenage stereotypes offering cheesy messages to the audience about opening your heart to others.
I actually really liked To Save a Life and honestly don't understand what you mean by offensive teenage stereotypes. I actually thought the messages were good without being overly preachy about them.
And I don't see how the message is to "open your heart to others". I didn't think it was about that at all. I saw it more about being about choices. And how the choices you make affect others. Which is a very good message for everyone, and especially for those who often act or speak before they think. It also addresses the fact that a lot of Christians honestly don't act at all like Christians. Which is another good point that I think needs to be addressed more often.
I think you might've missed the point of the movie. The mere fact that you wrote: "he must ultimately change his life after he joins a Christian teen group and sacrifice his dreams" shows that you didn't really pay much attention as it had nothing to do with sacrificing his dreams (which he didn't) or even about him joining the youth group. It was about him realizing that actions have consequences. Which is something we all should think about more often.
And the plot reflects things that happen all the time. As someone who was bullied and who fell into intense depression for a while, feeling like I didn't have any friends and that everyone I knew didn't like me, I think the plot did a good job in pointing out how a simple word or action can permanently damage another human being's self-esteem and can hurt them to the point where they think they're life is worthless.
I thought the actors did well enough, the acting definitely wasn't as bad as it was in some of the early Sherwood Pictures movies.
P.S."Brooklyn!"
I'm not extremely familiar with horse racing, but I saw Secretariat when it released, and own it. I disagree entirely with what was said above, it was put together with excellence in my opinion. Like was said afterward, it just isn't for everyone though. The movie held my captivated, in a good way- I love it.
To Save A Life, I wouldn't say it's cliched. But that doesn't mean I enjoyed it. I really didn't like it at all myself. I know it's called a christian movie, but I can't bring myself to see it as such- to me it just isn't, even if he joins a youth group.
I don't think To Save a Life should be classified as a "Christian" movie. I don't see it as such. At least not in the way "Christian" movies are defined nowadays. It's about the teens and their actions and consequences. Which is something everyone should know, not just Christians. It's not a "Christian" message really. It's a message for everyone.
P.S."Brooklyn!"

Most definatly! I LOVED the movie, I'm a big horse person. Secretariat's whole story was amazing, no other horse has ever beaten his record. The movie was actually rather acurate.

I liked Secretariat, but perhaps for an unusual reason compared to others mentioned here. I remember all the attention given to his Triple Crown run back in the 70s, so for me the movie not only had horse-lover appeal, but was something of a flashback to my much younger days.
Last night I saw The Young Victoria for the first time. Pretty impressive costume-wise. One aspect I found rather interesting was all the intrigue going on behind the scenes of the various European monarchies (especially near the beginning of the movie).
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Who here can tell me their opinion of the movie The Fifth Element? I know it's super old, but I've never seen it. I don't really know much about it, except I've seen a dialogue-free trailer and a very odd clip with Chris Tucker.

I full well expect to get publicly flogged for this, but I felt T5E is one of the most overrated pieces of Sci-Fi film to come down Pike's Peak. It's a film that is all over the place plotwise and themewise, and as a result it never really excels anywhere. There must be something redeeming in it somewhere because it has a huge fan base, but I have never been able to figure out what the reason was or what the fans see in it.
Also...it's not that old.

The Fifth Element is the ultimate "weird Sci-Fi film". Makes a lot of the trippy films of the 60's-70's look sane. But really, pretty much what Shadow said: It's all over the place plot wise and mood wise (adventure/slapstick comedy/druggy experimental film/Sci-Fi). It's definitely a VERY curious little film.
Personal recommendation: Skip it.
BTW, The Fifth Element came out in 1997. It's only 14 years old.

The art direction is pretty good but Chris Rock annoys the stuffing out of me, especially in that movie. The Fifth Element is weird in the same way that a Terry Gilliam movie is weird, only without the clever British humour and a more balanced, quality script. Also, I don't know how a 14 year old movie is 'super-old'.

It's super old to me. Mostly because I'm super young and not old enough to even remember seeing the commercials for it. And it seems like all the movies that were made pre-DVD years are considered old and not talked about much anymore. At least, among the people I know. This might sound odd, but the reason I said it was super old was because I was afraid people might get angry at me for bringing up a movie made as far back as the 90s, like the people I know outside of NW do... Maybe I should come to this thread more often.
I generally like really odd movies, which is why this one interested me. That crazy kind of weird Sci-fi is usually something I enjoy.
My main concern, I guess, is content. Does it have anything particularly bad in it?

Chris Rock is in it too? I knew Chris Tucker was in it. He played the Ruby Rap character.

Sorry, I meant Chris Tucker.
Old? Fair enough. Still, DVDs have been around since 1997 (although, I think I only knew of them two years later).
The content in The Fifth Element varies. There are some sexual references and adult themes and there's a little language and a moderate amount of violence. I don't know what it's rated in America but knowing your rating system, it could probably get by with a PG-13.
