Louloudi the Centaur,
I love The Sword in the Stone, of course with that I think it's criminally underrated as well. Much better than it's given credit. :)

Wow, talk about a blast from the past! I haven't seen The Sword in the Stone in a long while either. We first saw it at the theater when I was in my pre-teens....back then (in the 70's and very early 80's, before the advent of the VCR) when you saw a movie in the theater that was pretty much it, unless they showed it on television (this is why people would go see Star Wars 20 times instead of just once and then waiting the 3 months it'd take for a VHS tape to come out). But of course with a movie like Jaws they edit out a lot of the violence. It was almost criminal with Disney movies because I don't recall that they ever showed them on TV, so the only times you could see them is when they were at the theater, thus when a Disney animated movie was showing it was always a packed crowd because who knew when the opportunity to see it would come around again. ;))

I saw Fantasia, Sword in the Stone, and Pinnochio at the movies. We were supposed to go see The Black Cauldron at some point, but it never panned out. Who remembers that one? Is it any good? ;)) I've always been curious about it. And another weird admission....I have never seen Snow White and the 7 Dwarves.

The Sword in the Stone was a decent movie but I never liked the characters all that much and it was part of the Disney low-budget era so the animation was very sub-par.
The Black Cauldron is quite good and a fair bit darker than your average Disney fare. It's a movie based on one of the Prydain Chronicles books.

The animation for The Sword in the Stone might be very sub-par, but this is one case where I actually think it worked in its favor- actually really enjoy that era of Disney movies because of the animation.

As for The Black Cauldron,
I enjoyed parts of it but as a whole I didn't like it. One of the few Disney not in my collection- along with The Hunchback of Notre Dame which I despise and the cheap DVD sequels, oh and some newer movies too like Bolt.

I've never seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Bolt was decent and the DVD sequels I've never even bothered with. I'm not sure what you mean by enjoying Disney movies because of the low-budget animation. That doesn't make sense to me.

I really liked The Black Cauldron. It was good, and in my opinion Elionwy was probably the most underrated Disney Princess. And is it just me, but did the movie remind you just slightly of Tolkien/LotR?

Never really got to see the full movie of The Sword in the Stone, but remember liking the parts I did see. I think I only saw bits and pieces of it in like doctor's waiting rooms, when it's playing in the Disney store, and on Disney Sing-a-longs. (Haha Disney sing-a-longs... any 90's kids remember those?)

Disney's The Black Cauldron is actually based on two of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain books: The Book of Three and The Black Cauldron. Because of this, the movie attempted to condense and combine a lot of the story and a few parts in the movie make more sense if you've read the books. I remember liking the movie when I was little but no so much now.

I've always wanted someone to make a movie out of The Chronicles of Prydian - or several, and now I hear they have! When was it made? What was bad about it? *too lazy to look it up* :P

I don't think it was low budget, I'm just using your wording on that specific era of Disney. I personally enjoy the animation used for those movies. I don't enjoy it because it's "low budget" I enjoy it because it's different from their other stuff.

Okay, fair enough. In comparison to earlier Disney movies though, the 60's and 70's had much rougher budgets.

Daughter of the King, very true but I never had a problem with that because I'd read the Prydian books prior to watching the movie (so my imagination just filled in the blanks).

Elanor, I'm not sure when The Black Cauldron movie was made, but I know it was sometime in the mid or late 70's. It wasn't the best movie ever but I don't remember anything being particularly bad about it. Certainly it was darker than other Disney fare and also copped some bad press from parents for not having any Disney sing-a-longs but I don't think that sort of thing would suit.

So apparently there's a two-disc edition of Watership Down that was/will be released this year...

Now I just need to find it and get the money for it...

On another note apparently the other most recent release was rated PG according to Walmart.com I admit I'm surprised, I would have thought it'd have gotten PG-13 due to the blood, but I guess the fact that it is animated doesn't help :P

I was watching some kids tonight and we watched "Yogi Bear". oh wow. that as to be the worst movie I have ever seen :P it was a cross between Sesame Street and "Firehouse Dog" :P the plot line needed help and the acting was really lame :P (IMO!)

just my two cents!

A movie that Libby didn't like?! :-o ;)

This weekend I finally got to see Soul Surfer. Although my sarcastic side had quite a few nit-picky issues with parts (that I suppose most people would see as pretty trivial), I thought it was pretty good. The two best highlights for me was I thought that Bethany and her parents were super well cast, and the shark scene was done *really* well. Probably my favorite "faith film" so far.

Outlier, I chuckled too! I wouldn't go anywhere near the Yogi Bear movie. The cartoon was okay but the movie trailer was abysmal, so the movie could only be worse.

Yeah, I remember thinking that Yogi Bear looked like an unholy, CG stink bomb when I saw the trailer at the movies. Still, I have made it a personal quest to watch bad movies when they come up. So whatcha think Libbinator, want me to watch it and see how bad it truly is? ;))
