Yesterday in the midst of my wisdom teeth removal, I watched Mulan. Great Disney movie. While not exactly historically accurate, it is very fun to watch. Did you know the dragon Mushu is voiced by the same voice actor the voices Donkey in Shrek. Mulan is a very good role model for girls, and unlike most Disney princess movies(Mulan is often considered one even though she is not)
Actually I think the voice of Mushu is the same voice actor that voices Donkey in the movie Shrek. Eddie Murphey is his name.
And I love that movie. Mulan is such a great strong heroine character. And it is (kinda) based on a true story.
P.S."Brooklyn!"

.Spoilershe does not marry at the end
That right there is why Mulan is the only antimated Disney movie that I like.
Um, I've never seen Tron Valiant wrote that. XD

I check PluggedIn before going to the movies with my parents because the last thing I want is to be sitting in the theater with my parents during a love scene. Can you say awkward? But for movies I'll be watching alone or at home on my laptop, I'm a lot more interested in whether it's a quality movie and so will turn to sites like Rotten Tomatoes. I can fast-forward through objectionable adult content and profanity doesn't really bother me, so their site isn't that useful for my needs.
On recent scoring: I think the most musically unique scores I've heard recently were the Tron: Legacy score and, to a lesser extent, the X-Men: First Class score. I've noticed the same problem Cor has; lately everyone wants to sound like Hans Zimmer. I don't know if that's a directorial decision or an artistic one, but even Patrick Doyle was channeling Zimmer in the Thor score. Don't get me wrong, I love Zimmer's work; I just don't want to hear everyone single composer parroting him out of some mistaken belief that's what the audience wants.
Has anyone seen The Golden Compass or The Secret of Moonacre? I was wondering if they're clean, good movies, or not, or if they just stunk. Cause I love fantasy movies when I can find ones without witches and spells or immodest women (for my bro's sake).

Lucy of Narnia: I have never heard of The Secret of Moonacre, but as for The Golden Compass, I must warn you that the author of the book that the movie was based on is an atheist who wrote his books to oppose C.S. Lewis' books on purpose. I have never read or watched the movie or the book, but I have heard that both are very weird and having seen pictures of The Golden Compass movie, I don't think it fits in the 'without immodest women category'.....
and having read a few reviews, Christian and secular, I found out that part of the story's plot is about a little girl who is sent on a mission to kill God.....
here is an excerpt from an article I found:
Pullman has not been shy in the past about verbalizing his beliefs — or, some might say, nonbeliefs — and his intentions in writing the "Dark Materials" novels.
The novelist has said they are in response to C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia," the popular children's fantasy series of which "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is the first book — written by Lewis to teach Christian ideals to kids.
"I loathe the 'Narnia' books," Pullman has said in previous press interviews. "I hate them with a deep and bitter passion, with their view of childhood as a golden age from which sexuality and adulthood are a falling away." He has called the series "one of the most ugly and poisonous things" he's ever read.

Thanks, in that case, I never wanna see it!! I thought it was just a 'cheaper' fantasy movie that stole the wardrobe theme. I am SO not seeing this, thank you so much for telling me this Libby!
Um, I daresay HIS movie is "one of the most ugly and poisonous things".

I have seen the Golden Compass movie. The movie greatly tones down the anti-Christian theme, but a lot of that might be more prevalent in the latter two books, which have not been made into movies. It is definitely one of those cheaper fantasy movies and is not really worth it. The talking animals in The Golden Compass are basically the 'souls' of their human partners and are called 'daemons' (pronounced dee-mon).
This movie and Harry Potter have been discussed on the Christianity thread and I would consider The Golden Compass to be much lower on the quality scale. In CPR thread, one poster indicated she believed these daemons were real, which sent off all kinds of red flags for me. HP I can consider entertaining at its best but TGC is worse. I will say you are not missing anything by not seeing it. And even more so by not reading the book of which I will not.
Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.
Well, after giving glowing praise to its score, I was finally able to watch Legends of the Fall tonight. I must say, the film is pretty much what I expected though it did surprise me in some areas.
The story, despite being rather amoral, is quite engaging if rather Soap Opera-esque. Despite the fact that our "hero" is the crazy Tristan (Brad Pitt), I still felt for the character and actual liked him... to an extent. Most of the characters are interesting enough, though some (like Susanah) are rather... vague at times.
The acting is decent by all parties, though there are some unintentionally funny moments of overacting during scenes of family arguments. The scene of Tristan and Alfred arguing on the porch is a priceless case of unintended comedy. Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins are probably the best and most consistent actors in the film.
As I have said before, James Horner's lush score is simply incredible! The score truly makes the film, which suffers when Horner's work is not accompanying the scenes. It's definitely a powerhouse score and I still believe it to be Horner's finest.
The sets, costumes and cinematography (which won the 1994 Academy Award) are all top notch and add to the authentic and epic nature of the film. The shots of the towering mountains, rivers and lush forests are reason enough to watch this film.
Unfortunately there are some objectionable content in the film (it's rated R after all...). There is a fair amount of cursing in the film, mostly mild except for a few instance of the F-word and a crude hand gesture. There is also some "love scenes" with quick nudity (thankfully only three short scenes!) and a good bit of violence with moderate blood and gore.
It's also worth noting that the Ludlow family give God plenty of lip service, but are more "religious" than anything else. In other words, they simply act the way they want to act and then ask "god" to help them or protect them.
Anyway, Legends is rather a hard film for me to rate since there is equal measures of good and bad in it. Ultimately, I'd say it's a film worth checking out at least once, though for most people I'd just recommend buying the score album and passing on the movie.

^ Short tribute to James Horner (1953-2015)
The Golden Compass movie was crap. The book, The Northern Lights on the otherhand was very good and not anti-God, just anti-organised religion. It's the other two books in the series that get nasty. That said, His Dark Materials are much more dangerous for children than Harry Potter could ever hope to be.
Currently watching:
Doctor Who - Season 11
I've read The Golden Compass, and I enjoyed it, though it kind of scared me. I'll take Libby's word about the author, but I didn't notice anything anti-God in the book at all. I think ya'll had probably better make your decisions about it after you've read it, because it's not good to tell somebody that a certain thing is bad (or good) when you don't actually know.

I actually enjoyed the Golden Compass movie. There's nothing anti-God in it at all. I agree that the latter books are dangerous. That's when it gets into the anti-God stuff. But like W4J said, the first book (and consequently the movie) is mainly anti-organized religion. And actually, I didn't get any anti-religion from the movie at all, and I went into the movie with a grain of salt because I'd heard all the horrible things about it. But the movie is actually very tame.
And there's no inappropriate stuff in it at all as far as sexual content. There's no romance or anything in it.
So I would say that The Golden Compass movie is just fine to watch. It's not the best movie ever made, but I liked it and enjoyed watching it and didn't find anything really objectionable in it as far as non-family-friendly stuff, though there is some fantasy violence. And there's nothing anti-God in it either.
P.S."Brooklyn!"
PC, I have pretty much the exact same feelings about Legends of the Fall as you, only I didn't like the score quite as much as you do It reminded me a lot of how I feel about Titanic---the characters are actually rather annoying and the acting isn't Oscar worthy but the story is engaging enough to keep you interested despite all that. What really bugged me was Susannah, she basically just moved thru all the men in the family.
