I'd never heard of pluggedin.com until I came here several years ago. Growing up my parents were able to go by the generic rating system. R was off limits until well into my teens but PG's and PG-13's were fine. Back then it was a pretty good measuring stick to go by, although now there's stuff in PG movies that would have blown the socks off of equitable movies in the 80's. I think another thing people are missing is that they treat Hollywood like it should be churning out lots of Christian movies when in fact it is quite obviously a secular setup. If you go into any Hollywood produced movie with a mind to find something wrong you're not going to be disappointed, and so we find ourselves trying to stick to the least offensive films. It gets to be like throwing the baby out with the bathwater in terms of expectations, and it is an unrealistic stand to take. And because pluggedin's "opinions" are so skewed from anything unrealistic and they purport to try and represent a film to me based upon their extremely narrow range of what they consider acceptable, I can't help but feel a little bit vindictive towards them despite any good intent they may have.
I'd love to see their takes on Aliens, Predator, and Die Hard. It would be almost worth the price of a movie admission.

Since everyone seems to be posting their views on PluggedIn... I thought I'd come out of lurking to post mine.
I am a fan of the site. However, I do agree that they are very nitpicky and often the summary ends negatively, but I do find this site an invaluable tool for me when it comes to my media choices. Since I don't like to be subject to a lot of profanities or sexual scenes when I watch movies, and often choose not to watch certain movies because of this, I nearly always check the review on PluggedIn to see how much objectionable content is in the movie I'm considering. They are very thorough, but at the same time very discreet, so you know exactly what you're getting when the lights go down in the theater or you pop in the Redbox. I think, when used as a tool to make your own choices, it can be very helpful. However, if you use it as your media "Bible," so to speak (PluggedIn doesn't like it, so run fer the hills!!!!), you won't be watching many movies. Just thought I'd throw out a different view on the subject!
And while I'm here...
I love Anne of Green Gables! I have seen this movie, along with the sequels, many times over the years, though it's been a good while since my last viewing. The first two are fantastic. I think I enjoy them so much because they present every day life so beautifully, with all its little triumphs and traumas. I love to journey through life's joys and sorrows with one of my favorite fictional ladies, Anne Shirley. They are filled with one memorable moment after another and sure to move you to laughter or tears (and probably both!), and I highly, highly recommend them! As to how they fair as adaptations, I'm not sure. My mom read the first 5 (I think) books to me when I was really little, so I only have vague memories of those stories.
However, I despise the third film, primarily because Anne is just not Anne, at all. Though we do see her in completely a completely different situation than in the first two movies, in the middle of a war, I just cannot believe she would act that differently. There are a couple parts in this movie I like it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

"Oh telescope, keep an eye on my only hope,
Lest I blink and be swept off the narrow road.
Hercules, you've got nothing to say to me,
'Cause you're not the blinding light that I need.
For He is the saving grace of the Galaxies."
I've been making a playlist of my favorite movie scores on YouTube and in the process, I've recalled some old childhood favorites. I remember watching the classic Disney animated movies quite frequently and some of them have some amazing scores. I'm not talking about the songs. Many of those are great but I'm talking about the musical score. The two I love the most are from The Lion King and Mulan. Two of Disney's best all time movies IMO coupled with two of the best scores of all time too. So that brings up a topic we could discuss. Which movies out there are made by the music, not just by the acting, story, or graphics?
I love how LWW's score truly completments the movie. It doesn't stand out in which the movie would be horrible if not for the music but the score completes it. You can truly picture every shot of the LWW movie by listening to the soundtrack. What other movies have score that do this for you?
Other movies on my playlist right now include Narnia, LOTR, Star Wars, POTC, Indiana Jones, Jurrasic Park, Night at the Museum, Disney's Aladdin, First Knight, and of course the Lion King and Mulan. This list doesn't have every track, just the ones I love the most. And I'm not done yet.
Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.
Which movies out there are made by the music, not just by the acting, story, or graphics?
LWW is a definite! Also Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Lion King, Hidalgo, and the first PotC (I haven't seen the others yet.) I love Spirit's soundtrack, and Hidalgo's does such a good job of blending the Old West feel with the Arabian Desert feel... which is essential to the story.
I really enjoy the JP soundtracks... especially the chases in TLW and any of the Raptor Sequences in JPIII. Of course there's also the Dollar's Trilogy- It's hard to keep those of the list, I think The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is just as well known for the music as the story. And the Balto movies have pretty good tracks as well Especially the first.
On that note (spoiler warning!):
I LOVE that scene!!!
"The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." -John Muir
"Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Richard Adams, Watership Down
I agree that while Pluggedin.com can have a very biased and legalistic view on movies, when you want to know exactly what objectionable stuff is in a movie, it's a good place to go. That's the only use I have for it.

Neat idea for a new topic, Fencer! Seeing as how I LOVE film scores and love movies as well, I thought I would add to this list.
Legends of the Fall (1994)
Legend (1985) (The cut with the Jerry Goldsmith score only)
Krull (1983)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
The Quiet Man (1952)
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Field of Dreams (1989)
The Wind and the Lion (1975)
Jaws (1975)
Cera Una Volte Ill West (Once Upon a Time in the West) (1968)
Clash of the Titans (1981)
Stargate (1994)
--------------------------------------
As you can see, most of these films are pre 2000's and a large chunk of them come from the 80's (who said everything was bad in the 80's? ). I'm not sure, but it seems more films prior to the 2000's relied more heavily on their scores along with the acting, story and visuals. *shrug* Either way, we got some AMAZING music out if it.
If y'all have any question about the films or the music, just ask.

Hah I forgot Tron: Legacy! Definitely in the top ten right there... I agree too Cor that older films tend to have better scores, maybe cause they didn't have the best special Effects of the time?
Edit: And Once Upon a Time in the West had a good track, though when your dad turns the volume up to the point that your ears hurt, it starts to get a bit tiring... I must admit I never understood that movie 'til Dad explained the whole point behind the railroad... I still don't get half of it.

Wolfy, I'm not really sure... I think back "in the day" there were more composers that knew their style and would stick to it, plus directors/studios that liked the "real" sound. I hate to say it, but it seems with the massive popularity of Hans Zimmers action music that the overall swing of film scores has gone to rather simple, forgettable "filler" scores. Granted, there are still those that know how to score greatness, but they are few and far between (plus more under the radar).
Heh, I got Once Upon a Time in the West the first viewing. Granted, I think it's more like a Western 2001: More of an experience that an actual "movie".
*wonders if now would be a good time to resurrect the soundtrack thread...*

Ah yes - I watched Tron: Legacy the other night! I was by myself at home, and I was a bit worried that I wouldn't enjoy it by myself, because I'd be so tense and - yeah, well scared. But that appeared to be only a first time thing, and I enjoyed it, was more relaxed - but it wasn't the same as that first experience.
LOVE all the music from it.
A little bit of the soundtrack music I like is stuff from
The Village
Transformers (Arrival To Earth. )
LotR
and of course, Tron.

Elanor, I loved the Tron soundtrack as well. I don't think I would have like the film nearly as much if it weren't for that soundtrack.

Well, now I have seen the entire original PotC trilogy. And i have to say... I no longer like Will. He changed for the worst, in my opinion. Oh well. The movies are funny, and I love monkey Jack. "Thank you, Jack." XD

I don't think I wouldn't have liked the movie without the music, but it certainly added so much, like all good music does to movies. It did often depend on it.
EDIT: Sorry about that, Lucy. It automatically did that, and I'm not sure why. XD
