Y'all complained, so here is the thread!
Normally I don't really feel that the NaNo prep stage has started until the site refreshes for the year, and since the site refresh got pushed back a few weeks this year, it would explain why I did not have this thread dusted off and ready to go yesterday. You'll have to forgive this...lackluster opening post, but as I said, it's hard to get excited about NaNo without all the new shiny buttons and graphics, and a fresh NaNo profile to start decking out!
But, that's just me, and I know a lot of you have been clamoring for this thread. So, here it is.
For those of you who don't know, NaNoWriMo is a month long writing challenge that goes on during November. The goal is to write a complete novel of 50,000 words or more in a month. It's crazy, it's fun, it's madness...it's all sorts of things. But what it never, ever is, is boring.
Last year was my third year doing NaNo and I pretty much overdid it. I got really caught up in some intense word wars, plus my own personal goals, and wrote a monstrosity of over 100k. I do NOT intend on repeating that feat this year. I plan to take it easy, finish up the last book in this blasted trilogy, and not kill myself. Hopefully, that will give me more time to look after all of you and pull lots of fun write-ins and pep talks together.
Also last year was our inaugural Night of Writing Narnianly, where a bunch of us writers got in the chatroom and wrote and chatted all night long. It was a ton of fun, and I have every intention of repeating it again this year. Stay tuned for the date and details!
Ok, well, I think I'm done with this post. Sorry that it's not all fancy and written out; I did the best I could on a short notice, y'all!
As soon as the site relaunches, I'll post details on how all of us can make sure that we're in touch on the NaNo site, and word war details. Until then, have fun chatting about what you plan on writing! It's never to early to start plotting!
Enjoy, and have fun!
Yay, the thread is up!
I've never done Nano before, but I am planning on doing it this year! Super excited!
I've already put some things on my profile... I was wondering, when the site refreshes, will the stuff I put up be lost? *is new at this*

this is my first year doing NaNo I was persuaded by The Rose-Tree Dryad to try it and I agreed right away
I almost did it last year and chickened out - but last year I had not really read up on what it was about. so now I understand how it works and I'm all for it

When the site refreshes, you'll keep your username, friends list and...I'm trying to remember. Not a whole lot else. The forums will be completely wiped, and any novel info you've put in will be removed and you'll have to put it in again. So I wouldn't get too comfy in your current profile.

Uh-oh. Looks like I'd better back it up, so I can re-post it when it's wiped. Thanks for the heads up.

I was wondering when this thread would come. This will be my fourth year participating. Last year I didn't plan on it until about halfway through November, and so I only wrote about 23,000 words before I lost all inspiration and didn't finish, although I think I could have done so if I really tried. The previous two years though I was able to pass the 50,000 mark. So we'll see how this year goes with all the added busy-ness of being in your second year of post-secondary studies and having them not go as neatly as preferred. Thankfully my planned novel fits in with that which I am studying.
So, what are the novels that you each want to write? Mine will be (unless otherwise changed at the last moment) a story set in Great Britain and British India during the period of 1855-1858 or so, and will include the Indian Mutiny of 1857, from the view especially of two or three main characters. As such, I am doing more research than in previous years to make sure I get everything accurate, especially the little things (such as the fact it took three to six months of good sailing to travel from Great Britain to India, but when the Suez canal was built the trip was cut down to three weeks.... why didn't I choose to write a novel after the Suez canal was built? That way I would not have characters languishing on a ship for three to six months, even if they did like sailing and whatnot).
I look forward to reading what you each are planning on doing. I also look forward to your book covers, which I'm sure will be fantastic. I'll probably post mine soon.
And, as a p.s., good job on the thread opening, Gymfan!
Dear days of old, with the faces in the firelight,
Kind folks of old, you come again no more.
(Robert Louis Stevenson)
Yay! Thank you, Gymmie!
I'm really excited about NaNo this year. Last year's NaNo was. . . a disaster, to be frank, but it was my first attempt at participating, and I squeaked over the finish line with 50,004 words. My story was a disjointed, meandering, far-from-finished frustration, though—I only got about 10% of the actual story written down. I think I was aiming too high with my complicated and long-winded plot for a first time NaNo-er. Still, the fun of word wars and Night of Writing Narnianly and the experience of it all made the madness more than worth it, and I can't wait to try it again this November.
This year my goal is to just write a story from beginning to end. I don't really care how many words it is as long as it's longer than 50,000 words, and that the last two of those words are "The End."
I have a few different plot ideas, but at the moment the one I'm focusing on is a retelling of the Grimm Brothers' story Snow-White and Rose-Red, one of my favorite fairytales. This should help me reach my goal, since I have a ready made outline in the form of the fairytale itself. It'll be a fantasy, not a modern reworking of the story, which I hear has already been done very well. I plan on really fleshing out the characters and their backstories, building up the plot, giving the other prince a much bigger role, making the dwarf a much more sinister and calculating villain, et cetera. I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at retelling it.
Even more so, though, I'm looking forward to NaNo-ing with y'all! November is going to be an amazing month, and I can't wait to write with wild abandon, wage wars of words, and drink lots and lots of tea.
I would like to do NaNo this year, but I'm not entirely sure if my school and work schedule will allow it. We'll see.
P.S."Brooklyn!"
This will be my third time officially participating in NaNo (last two times being 2007 and 2010, both wins).
My story will go back to the story of my very first NaNo, The State of Mass Confusion. This is an all-new story (i.e. not a sequel) and features the eponymous State (the 52 1/2th state of the US, located north of that part of Michigan across from the lake and south of Baja, California and bordering Washington, D.C.) and four people that end up there, as all sorts of crazy things happen to them.
And... that's all I have, really. Because every chapter of this story is going to be written according to my whims on that day, just like it was done back in 2007. The results should be... interesting, to say the least.

This will be my fourth year as well and I'm looking forward to it!
Like Gymfan, I think I overdid it last year, though in my defense I was writing two novels simultaneously. Errr... yeah. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. It was fun, but I don't think I can say my writing improved by the end of the month.
At the moment, I'm planning on going back to the world and characters created in my second year and send them through the wringer find out what makes them tick and maybe how they got those fancy sounding titles like "High King" anyway. If anyone has any thoughts on high kings, send 'em my way! (Otherwise, I fear it will be all narrow escapes and strange cities and failed impersonations...not that I object to those, but I'm hoping for there to be some sort of meaning to this story.)
I need to write out a good summary of what I want to do, actually. 'Cause that probably didn't even make sense.
My goal is similar to that of the Most Excellent of Rose Dryads; but my take on it is that I want a strong ending. So I'm considering starting at the end of the story and working my way backwards, or maybe starting just before the end and after I get to the end I go back to the beginning and write until the end of November. It sounds confusing, so that should keep things interesting!

I'll sign up again as usual - as Wise Queen, as always.
I reached my personal goal last year, which was 5 000 words instead of 50 000 - I might set a similar goal this year.
I think I'll use what I wrote last year as Part One of a series and write Part Two this year, although it's not all that independent - but I'll start again where I left off last year, and try to get the story moving further towards where I want it to move.
It's fan fiction, cross-over Narnia/Silmarillion, with OC Silmarillion characters entering Narnia and becoming even more OC there ...

Yay! So excited for NaNo this year.
This will be my third year doing NaNo and my first doing it with my carpal tunnel. It's also going to be my first time co-authoring with Joe, but I'll let him post the details on that. I'm going to be working on both War of the Gods (co-authoring) and my side story (which is currently untitled), although my focus will be on co-authoring.
I'm currently working out the details of my side story... Hopefully I'll have a coherent plot by the end of this month, although it's not very likely. I'm a procrastinator.

Yay!! so exciting to see this thread!
I'm really exciting about NaNo, which I'll be doing for the second time - I got 56,000 words and a finished novel last year. I loved doing it, and I knew I would try to do it again.
I got my plot several months ago, and though I've gotten quite a few in the past year, this one I've actually stuck with, planned characters, etc. I'm kind of scared trying to do it with planning, because last year I realized I was doing it, the day after it started, and I didn't know the plot until at least 3/4 the way through. I think it'll be hard to have things and characters I *have* to put in by the end. I'm afraid my storyline will try to finish up wayyy before my goal.
But I have a lovely, lovely storyline (and a title, and a picture for the cover). It's set in World War II, and it's about a girl and a german spy, and it's a romance. I'm so excited!!! Can't wait to word war with ya'll again!

I've never done Nano and I I really want to try it this year. I have some ideas already going for two stories, one of which I hope to pursue and eventually (if not during Nov.) finish. I really need to do some more research for one of them though, otherwise it could head for the direction of becoming solely a senseless ramble. I feel like I'm probably going to be highly unsuccessful though, since I fall for nothing short of perfection and detail in each and every sentence. I know I have to relax about it, but I want everything to sound just right. 50,000 words is quite intimidating, but I'll probably go for it anyway! Heck, maybe the mayhem and excitement of getting it done will help me overcome my fears.
I always hear so many good things about NoNo and have admired those who participated, thinking I would do it someday too. Besides, it I don't get there at least I will have been motivated enough to start the story.

Yay, I've been waiting for this thread for about a month! I was disappointed that the website refresh was pushed back but since it'll make the site better, I'll deal with it.
This will be my third time doing NaNo. I lost in 2009, won in 2010, and am planning to win this year! I have a plot that I've been thinking about since December but I made myself keep my hands off of it until now. I've been sketching out the outline ever since December and I like it a lot. I can't wait until November!
My goal each year is to beat the previous year's word count. The first year was about 6 or 7k. Last year, I wrote a little over 53k. My goal this year is to write more than that.
I can't wait for the Night of Writing Narnianly! I hope it falls on a day that works well for me; I had to miss most of it last year due to youth group.
