Fanny, I really like your list of events! I had sort of begun one, but it was very hazy. Your example will help me solidify it, I think.
Oh good! I am glad. I thought perhaps the given list of events example might not have been the best or clearest, since it was something that I wrote up quickly.
Good to know.. I'll have to stop being a perfectionist about what I write, but I don't want my 50,000 to be completely dreadful when I finally go back and read it.
Hear, hear! (Or is it here, here?) Although I think that one can still retain a certain level of perfectionism, participate in NaNo and have fun, I know I certainly did with my detailed outlines and almost no real times when I had no clue where I was going. But then, part of that is probably just my personality.
Dear days of old, with the faces in the firelight,
Kind folks of old, you come again no more.

I'm gonna give it a try! I had never even heard of NaNoWriMo before I saw this thread, but I'm really glad I found out about it because it seems like it's gonna be great fun! I have a slight outline for a story in my head. I'm gonna try to get it written out today.

Here's the link to the NWeb thread on the NaNo site in case anyone missed it. If you'd like to add other NWeb's as buddies, your best bet is to post in that thread.

I think I'm completely insane, but I can't help but really want to go for that 100k this year! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
My main goal (aside from writing 50,000 words) is to write a main character that is not exactly like me in every way
Good goal. My MC last year pretty much WAS me. And 95% of the other characters were based off family/friends.
(Off topic: Your avatar is lovely.)
My MC is me with a few very small changes. I got the idea for the story from some circumstances in my life. About the only difference between her and me (so far) is her name and that she has a boyfriend. Oh and her birthday will probably be two months before mine is to work with the story-line.
I was daydreaming earlier about a scene I've been wanting to write for years - literally. (I do a lot of daydreaming. ) It's a reunion scene between two of my characters, and it takes place about midway through my sequel. And then it dawned on me. I'm writing that sequel for NaNoWriMo, which means I might finally get to put that scene into words in a matter of weeks! That thought totally made my day.
A little more than a week to go - I'm so excited! I even got one of my real life writer friends to do NaNo with me.

Ooh I'm very excited for Nanowrimo There's going to be quite a few write-ins and events for the participants in my city this year, and I'm going to finally write this novel I've been planning out for years. I'm spending this week trying to get all my synopsises (if thats a word?), character sketches, etcetera, together, and I can't wait to start writing in 10 days! Good luck to y'all (:
5.9.2011 the day Christ saved me!
Thank you Lady Faith for the sig!
I wish one of my real-life writer friends would do NaNo with me. They kind of did it last year, but it was incredibly sketchy. They kept saying, "Yeah, I'm not inspired right now, so I won't write."
NaNo isn't ABOUT inspiration! Nor is writing, for the most part! It's always so very frustrating to me when someone says that. Ugh.
I GOT AN IDEA YESTERDAY!
A hint? It's called The Hidden Prince.
First line of the book (I think ): "We have a long history of assassinations in my family."
I just realized that it's going to be written in first person. How strange! I haven't written in first person for about three years, except on short stories! I'm EXCITED!

Sweeet, just judging by the opening line, your story is going to have a healthy dose of awesome indeed.
It's driving me crazy to hear about all these amazing stories and know that they're not evening written yet. I hope you all try to publish your novels, if/when you get them tweaked to your liking. Or else I may die of curiosity.
Whew, just one week to go, and I'm still scribbling away at character profiles, hunting down names like Captain Ahab (and having to settle on some mediocre ones because of the time constraints ), attempting to figure out how I'm going to tie together so many elements together into one cohesive plot, and trying to sketch out a rough outline by writing down my objectives and general ideas for each chapter. Whew.
Insane. And awesome.
I made sure I told several people about my trying NaNo this year, so I'll have people asking me about it. I hope I win this year.
Question: does anyone else have trouble coming up with names?

Ditto!
Rose-Tree (or anyone, I guess), if you're interested in mine after November, I think I'd be willing to let NWebbers read my manuscript.
Winterlife, I have trouble coming up with good, fitting, names. Sometimes I resort to stuff like Henchman #5. Or I refer to them as 'the red jacket kid' (which does double duty by padding my word count ). Major characters often have to live with or grow into the random name I slap on because they didn't come into my story with a name.

I need to stop visiting this thread. I convinced myself I wouldn't do NaNo - couldn't do NaNo - but now I'm getting very inspired to do it.
AHHHH!!! Inspiration, go away!!! Why must you always come when I do not needeth thee? *sigh*

Only one week to go! Can you believe it?
And no, I have no problems coming up with character names. Mostly because I googled "names" and found lists of HUNDREDS of names. Now, I have a Word document with three columns on it: one column is girl's names, one is boy's names, and one is last names so I just go through that list until something jumps out at me and I use it.
Like my main character's dad, he wanted to be called Peter. I kept going through the list but he INSISTED on being called Peter until finally I was like "whatever, if you want to be Peter, BE Peter."

I love how that sounds exactly like something you would say. I can hear you saying it. And I kinda wish that would happen to me.

I have been thinking about creating a nobody who just so happens to always be nearby and name him The Man with the Mustache and Last Week's Lunch on His Shirt or something. It would be wordcounty and comical. I have even gone so far as to consider never use pronouns when writing about him. (Mostly joking.)

Are you doing that as a dare, or as an integral part of your plot? Either way, it sounds awesome!
Aw, you guys are so nice! "A healthy dose of awesome" made me crack up. Awesome use of awesome!
