I noticed that there are people with second names here, that is so cool because in Russia second names are unheard of. You have your first name, (if you are a girl it will end with and a (there are a few exceptions though) if you're a boy it will end in anything but a (this does not go for abbreviations of names, most abbreviations will end in a whether boy or girl). After your first names you carry your father's name, if your a girl in ends with vna if a boy it end with vich, and then your surname. So if a girls name if shall we say Nadezhda Nikolayevna then you know that her father's name is Nikolai. Also there is no such thing as Mrs. or Mr. in Russian, you usually address you elders by their first name and their father's name.

That's really neat! :) I was learning in geography about Iceland, and they said that for last names- For a girl, it would be her father's name and then dottir. And for a boy, it would be his father's name and then son. Do the words' Russian counterparts have a similar meaning to "son" or "dottir/daughter"? :)

I think the information in your post is fascinating! Now I know why Star Trek's Chekov calls himself "Pavel Andreivich."

I think most North Americans have a second (aka 'middle') name.

A number of friends and relatives have adopted internationally, from China and Korea specifically. They've given their children "American" names (like Holly or Zachary) but have kept their birth names (like Chunmei or Jun) as their middle names. I guess this is a rather common custom in cases like this, but I think it's kind of neat as a reminder of their country and culture of origin.

More people in australia have 2nd names then peopel that don't. Some people have more then 1 middle name. Middle names are commonly, their parents names or parents middle name and soem times are random(which was in my case) my firest name was after my uncle.

To tell you the truth I don't really know, at least 'vna' and 'vich' don't mean daughter and son in the literal sense. I'm not to sure what they mean, caring your father's name has been around for centuries. There are times that I can't remember the surname of some people because I am so used to calling them by their first name and father's name.

^^Wait. Some people go by their father's name, and not their surname? I thought that tradition was ancient. Guess not. I do know that it isn't just Iceland that did the "-son"/"-dottir" thing. Several of my anscestors are from Denmark, and they have last names like "Olafsson" and "Olafsdottir". That's also why names like "Anderson" and "Johnson" are so common (at least in America)--because the daughters would take on their husbands' names, and their last name (like "Olafsdottir") would be lost, while their husband's name would be carried on, once people started using surnames instead of father's names.

Well, my name is Maria and when I was little I hated my name! But now I really like my name and I wouldn't change it.
Though, my middle name is another story. If I had enough money, I would change it in an instant! (It is weird and the doctor's spelt it wrong on my birth certificate!)

As for names for any future children I may have, I also like really unique and unusual names. I especially like nature names and hebrew names.

I'm really into the boys name "Javier" right now which is Spanish. There's just something catchy by it and I love the pronounce of the J.

I already have my names for kids. If it's a girl I'll name her "Liselle" and if it's a boy I'll name him "Oliver"

I have a female professor named Regulus and I was protesting to a friend that naming your baby girl Regulus was like naming them Archibald or Alastair. But then I decided I actually liked Alastair for a girl and had to take that back. ;)) What are your opinions of androgynous names? Are most Taylors girls or boys? How about names like Adrian/Adrien/Adrianne? Is Alastair a crazy name for a girl? What about names like Riley and Ryan that are becoming increasingly female? Has there ever been a girl's name that became a boy's name? Countless male names have become feminine (Jocelyn, Leslie, etc.), but I can't think of any that have gone the other way.

Alastair is such a pretty name for a girl! (And a boy, too. If they have a personality like Little Lord Fauntleroy, or something.)
Hm, I've never met a female Ryan but I have met an Evin, Mikal (pronounced just like "Michael"), and a few others. Adrian is definitely a name for boys and girls.
I've always thought Demi was a girl's name, but Little Men said differently. I suppose it all depends on what era.
