The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie you have to see. It is a little along the lines of Lotr's as far as violence.
The Neverending Story Trilogy, you have to check it out if you have not already.
Coraline is along the lines of epicness, there are some dark elements but it does have a family friendly tone, there is this one scene in particular where it's naughty but easily over looked by its comedic tone and also because it was a suit all along.
City of Ember would have to be another one.
Another one of my favorites that I grew up with was Space Camp, it has Kelly Preston and Joaquin Phoenix in it. It's about a group of teenagers going to space camp and this one group is sent to space by a robot when they toured NASA. I kind of remembered a tiny bit of profanity but it's still a movie that family can enjoy and it's very epic.
Also try the original Clash of the Titans. It's really good.
Long Live King Caspian & Queen Liliandil Forever!
Jill+Tirian! Let there be Jilrian!
I remember Space Camp. That was a long time ago. Along those lines, Flight of the Navigator was a decent family-friendly movie as well.
Race to Witch Mountain (with Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, and Ludwig Alexander) is also pretty good. Not great, but good.
If you don't care much about acting or plot, you can check out The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (also starring Ludwig Alexander).
Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.
^ I love your recommendations too! Those other movies are worth checking out as well! Now I have Flight of the Navigator theme song stuck in my head, lol!

I would highly recomend the movie Arn. It is a Scandinavian movie, so I don't know if you'll find it dubbed in English or with subtiltles. But if you ever find it, its a great movie.
Escape to Witch Moutain (1975) is a great movie. The effects are....well not the best, but the plot is great and interesting.
Another great movie is the 1973 The Three Musketeers. Awesome movie!

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I'll have to look into some of these!

You suck a lollipop, and you sing a song. Get it right, Jo!
I second the suggestion of The Princess Bride if you have not seen it. It is an excellent film!
Wrong will be right when Aslan comes in sight / At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more / When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death / And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again
Hey, just wanted to comment on a few things...
I never understand when people complain about Pirates of the Caribbean in regards to immodesty. Of all the action movies out there POTC is one of the least offending in that regard and certainly nothing to complain about. Although there are some dark elements in POTC, the light-hearted nature and spectacle of the film really tones it down (especially the first one - Dead Man's Chest can get a little heavy handed).
You might like Prince of Persia - I personally didn't care for it but it's epic, historical and fun.
"They know everything on NarniaWeb" - Ben Barnes
Lucy of Narnia,
Another film which has an epic quality to it is The Robe. I will say though that I'm not particularly fond of it myself but I know of people who RAVE about it. Another film from the same era is Quo Vadis. I have only seen a bit of it and I can't say I liked what I saw but I know of people who again rave about it.
Now for some positive reviews
There is an Italian film company called Lux Vide which has done numerous films and there are some that are very well worth watching. These include my favourite one which is called John Bosco - Mission to Love and details the life of a priest looking after abandoned boys in Turin in the 1800's. It's an absolutely awesome film!! There is one violent scene in it and it can be a bit heart wrenching in places, this is especially true of the first half. There is also one scene with a streetwalker but this is done very tastefully (she is pretty well dressed, just a tiny bit of midriff showing EDIT: There is nothing wrong with this scene - its perfectly clean) I have younger brothers and sisters and they watch this film with me all the time although I do fast forward the violent scene for the benefit of my very young sisters (3, 7 and 9) and I also fast forward a scene which comes shortly after this and which you can see coming from a mile off- I can't tell you any more without giving away a heap of spoilers! One thing I will say is that because it is an Italian film you will only be able to get it from a place such as Amazon (if you're interested you could look it up on Amazon and read some of the reviews - there shouldn't be any spoilers in them - fingers crossed ). It is dubbed with English which takes a bit of getting used to but there is an option with the original Italian with English subtitles which you may prefer.
This film is actually miniseries made for Italian tv so it is pretty long. It's from a Catholic perspective (I'm Catholic myself) but they don't give Protestants a hard time or anything like that (I'm presupposing you are protestant - sorry if you're not!)
Hope this is of help to you. I know what it's like trying to find decent films to watch!
Do you love "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes?
If so you might like to see my sister's dramatization of this poem through her photography!
