I'm not sure if this warrants a topic all of its own...and I know there is a movie topic, but I wanted more specific...mods, is this okay?

I am looking for movies reminiscent of Narnia and Lord of the Rings, that maintain the same level of family friendliness. As long as it isn't like R rated, basic violence (like in the above movies) is fine, I also like Gods and Generals, so anything on level with that is good too (we can navigate certain words, etc.). What I really want is teenage-boy friendly movies- meaning, no half-naked women, etc. I really like the Historical, epic-ness of Pirates of the Caribbean, but have not seen it due to the immodesty, dark elements (btw, if you have seen those movies, how were they in those regards?)...anyway, I really like good movies but find it hard to find them. What I'm looking for is basically clean, epic movies. I love epic!

Hmmmm, have you seen Gone with the wind? That is definitely an epic movie and not too bad on the "clean" side. I liked Pirates of the Caribbean ok, but they're not really my favorite. I really liked the first one, but if you're not comfortable with curses and dark images, you may not care for it. I also suggest Ben Hur from 1959. Another awesome epic! Anyway, just a few of my suggestions!

Wrong will be right when Aslan comes in sight / At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more / When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death / And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again

Thank you!

And as far as the 'dark' goes, it's just that PotC seems to be all about dead guys coming to lie and other creepy stuff...*shivers*

I am going to look into Gone with the Wind, especially because I am into Civil War right now!

Also, my family saw Ben Hur, but I'm not sure exactly what it's about...maybe I'll like it since I'm older now. :)

Thanks again!

Lu :)

I love Pirates of the Caribbean, but you are right about the dark elements. It does have that. I'm not sure what you mean by the immodesty though... Whatever elements of that were in there, they would be pretty minor. I think there was just a quick, really minor comment someone made, and one girl we see quick who's top is a bit low but still covers her. So it depends how high your standards on that are.

Let's see... other good fantasy movies... I know Bridge to Teribithia is good, and Inkheart. They're pretty medium-scale children's movies, so of course, they're not going to have the huge epic-ness of LOTR. But they are still good movies.

One family-friendly fantasy movie I just adore is Penelope. It's rated PG, so it has a couple comments in it that could have been left out, but nothing so bad as to take away it's family-friendly rating.

I remember when I was little, I loved two fantasy movies called The Neverending Story and The Labyrinth. It's been awhile since I've seen them, so I don't remember them too well. But they should be family friendly since my mom let me watch them when I was quite young, and she was very strict with me at that age. They were made in the 80s though, so they would have more "Jim Henson Muppet" special effects instead of the CGI special effects we have today.

Thanks Riella! And BTW, I like Star Wars Original Trilgoy and it has 'muppet effects', so that would be okay! lol! :)

I reccomend Penelope too. It was really good and has our wonderful James McAvoy in it. ;)

I watched Eragon several years ago. I wasn't super wild about it just because it left me with a bunch of unanswered questions and plus, after LotR and CoN, not much other fantasy measures up. :p However, I know lots of people who loved it. I don't think there was any inapropriate content: I watched it at a youth group lock-in.

I would like to suggest the movie "Hidalgo". Have you perhaps heard of and or seen it before?

I've only seen it once and it was a while ago though in my mind it was quite epic and very well made.

Also something that might interest you is Viggo Mortensen is the main character in that movie - he plays Frank Hopkins.

Basically if you want to know a little bit about it... I'm going to totally fail at explaining this - I really suggest just going to a review site if you need to make sure its clean first or something - I wouldn't suggest anything in to much detail because it would give away some of the movie which wouldn't make it as exciting.

But if you have any questions about it I can try to answer them. A few very minor words - I wouldn't even worry about that at all...

It is rated PG-13 - which I believe is mostly because of the violence in it.

But in my mind it is family-friendly. (Reminder I'm an 18 year old Male :P ).

But I wouldn't feel badly if my little sisters were to watch that movie.

EDIT: Oh, basically the movie is about Frank who travels to Arabia to compete in a horse race - a very long and dangerous race but the reward for winning is very great.

So a great story about a man and his horse. ;)

But no, in all seriousness it was an amazing movie and I am probably going to go watch it again now.

Hidalgo is a really good movie. It is also one of the few movies, especially post-9/11 that depicts the Arabic culture in a fairly good light. There are Arab bad guys, but there just as good Arab good guys.

Another one I recommend is SecondHand Lions. Not fully epic in the LOTR or Narnia sense, but it has an epic feel to it. SecondHand Lions is about a kid, Walter (played by Haley Joel Osment) who is essentially dropped off with his two bachelor uncles while his mother goes off to do her thing. The two uncles, Hub and Garth (played by Robert Duval and Michael Caine) are at retirement age and want nothing to do with society (living in the middle of Texas with no phone, no TV, no electricity) but somehow seem to have a massive horde of cash stashed away. During Walter's stay, he begins to hear these stories about how Hub and Garth had adventures in Africa and learns the value of believing in something whether it is true or not. Really good movie.

Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.

Oh Hidalgo is awesome :)

Other than that I'm afraid my movie knowledge isn't very high, so I can't help you much...

I love watching James McAvoy, truly an amazing actor! I love Penelope and Becoming Jane is also one of my favorites with him. I'm surprised it got the rating of a PG with one little scene

Spoiler
when his character and Jane's brother when they went skinny dipping and there's brief nudity there. It was funny and lol but I thought because of that it would be PG-13 but it wasn't.

I am looking for movies reminiscent of Narnia and Lord of the Rings, that maintain the same level of family friendliness.

Well, I'm going to have to recommend Willow. I love that movie... a lot. Though it's rather hit and miss with a lot of people. ;))

You've seen The Princess Bride, yes? If not, that's another good one.

And I'll ditto all of the recommendations for Penelope. :D

ETA: Well, I did recommend clean, family-friendly movies. Epicness is perhaps in the eye of the beholder. ;)) But I should probably warn that all three of the above are far more silly than Narnia and LotR.

Thanks so much!

Right now I'm really excited about Hidaglo, as Aragorn- I mean, Viggo Mortenson is in it. ;) Anyone in LotR means I'm interested in reviewing that movie!

^lol! Thanks! I will let everyone know how it goes!

Oh, one more thing: in case anyone misunderstood, I am a girl. But I have a brother, and that is why I want to find only modestly-clothes women in the movies. (In case anybody thought I was a boy... :p )

Also there's the movie Stardust. There are some dark moments because the antagonist is a witch, and there is some violence, but the violence is actually comedic ;) . I think there are a few moments where some clothes are lacking, but it's not saturated with that kinda thing.
