Kate--Aw. I still think you should go short! You'd suit it so well.
Hmm...well first off, you should really get a trim--just to get the split ends away. It can make a huge difference I find If you have crazy thick hair, getting it thinned a little can make it more manageable too.
If you use a lot of hair products (or basically any hair products), over time it creates buildup in your hair. The way to get rid of it is to "strip" it. I know you can get shampoos designed specfically for that, but I think vinegar is also helpful...and it also makes your hair shiny!
Then after you've stripped your hair of residue, you can go crazy with conditioning treatments to nourish it.
That's about all I can think of I'm not really a expert on hair, unfortunatly

Thanks Val, I'm definitely still considering it. I keep seeing people with short hair and getting envious.
That sounds like great advice. Is there any specific type of vinegar to use? I think my impulse would be to use white vinegar. Balsamic or Red Wine seems a little odd. Haha.
Definitely get your hair cut short! here are some reasons to get it cut short!
1. Use less shampoo
2. it blow dries much faster
3. easier to straighten/curl and style
4. altogether more manageable!
This may just be my opinion but I think shorter haircuts can make you look skinnier, I think I look skinnier since I got my hair cut short.
MoonlightDancer, I love how your signature, "I lead a crazy life!" is under that picture like a caption. That is one crazy hairstyle. Kinda cool, though. I'll have to try that with my hair sometime and scare my family.
It was a little crazy but I kind of want something even more dramatic!! Any ideas, anyone?

I would try big hot rollers! They are fast and if you do them right they turn out really good! I would wash your hair really good and put plenty of conditioner in it. Then towel dry and put some moose but not to much. Then blow dry till its dry. Warm up the curlers and start at the end of a strand of hair and roll up! After you are done let them cool for about 40 min. and when they are all out hairspray them really well. If you want curly hair all over I would pull your fingers through your hair and separate the strands. But for ringlets don't do that! I hope that helps!

I know this doesn't have to do with makeup, but it has to do with hair...
I haven't gotten around to shaving for a few days, so I was thinking about growing out my beard for the first time. Do you girls have any opinions on how beards look on guys?
3 words: Don't do it!!!
Haha but in all seriousness, my opinion is that everyone looks better without facial hair.
Moonlight, with a little work, you could look possessed.
Dryad, a large barrel curling iron or large curlers (I forget their names--but you can find them at Target) would do the trick. And hairspray.
Kate--Leave it long!! Its a lot easier when you know how to "manage" it. For the split ends, and etc: first, if you have any heat tools that you use on your hair, cease and desist using them. That will only make the problem worse. Secondly, don't know what your hair type is, but, if it is wavy/curly, using just conditioner will help out. Only use shampoo like, once every 10 days. I know it sounds weird, but when I tried it, it helped. Now I don't use shampoo at all, and my hair is better than it has ever been. I use Aussie, and that's helped, too. They have a moisturizing one that I love.
Hope that helps!
If ya'll haven't noticed, I put up a picture of myself in the motw thread (don't forget to ask me questions there! ). Here it is, for reference:
I actually used a lot of make up to do that. I started out with L'Oreal's true match in porcelain as a base, then used L'Oreal's true match cappuccino to darken my eyes, cheek hollow and eyebrow. I then used spirit gum to affix the mask to the other half off my face. Finished it off with Revlon's Choco-liscious lipstick, and some touch-up with the porcelain liquid. I was actually quite surprised, because in many of the pictures, the lipstick showed up quite red.
Congratulations if you read all of that.

Wow, thanks for the great feedback everyone!
I'm still planning on cutting my hair, but I'm waiting for the right conditions. It might be another month or so.
LadyA: I tried not using shampoo last night and I can't even imagine doing that for 10 days! I didn't notice much of a difference today in manageability except that it feels dirty and is heavier and the hairs are more likely to stick together (I never really had a frizz problem though, they're already pretty clingy little things). This is conjecture, but could there be a difference in that my hair is light and yours is dark?
Light hair might show up grease and dirt easier than dark hair, but different heads produce oils at different rates. I get some VERY strange looks when I tell them that I only wash my hair once a week. I shower more than that; I just don't get my hair wet! I can go about six days before my hair starts feeling greasy to me, and about a week and a half before it looks dirty. So I'm pretty lucky in that regard.
I think it was WW who once said that you should only shampoo the top of your head, and only condition the length. I think that's a pretty good rule of thumb to follow (although I do put a tiny bit of conditioner on the top of my head because my hair is so frizzy).
Regarding split ends, you can't "fix" those. You can help prevent new ones by using proper conditioning and avoiding heat, but you can't heal the ones you already have, and existing split ends tend to damage the whole hair (i.e. it will keep splitting and splitting and won't go away properly). So if split ends is your chief concern, there's only so much you can do without starting over with a clean slate, i.e. a hair cut of an inch or two.
I got a pretty drastic hair cut a week or so ago, and I really like it, except I don't have any layers anymore. I'm thinking I'll go back in a month or so for a trim and get some more put in. No bangs...I'm not brave enough for that.
Haha, do any women here like beards? Beards without moustaches look incomplete to me. I'm not getting rid of mine any time soon. I look far too young sans beard.

I'm a little afriad to find out what my hair would look like if I only conditioned it I don't think that would work with my hair...I usually shampoo the whole thing, condition the length (never the top, unless for some reason it's REALLY dry and damaged).
Warrior, I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of beards, but I definetly think the guy should be mature...i.e., not under 20, at least. I don't think I've ever seen a beard on a under 20 year old that I liked

Do you guys have any ideas on a shampoo or shampoo/conditioner combo that moisturizes not the hair, but the scalp? I have a very dry scalp and I'm beside myself for what to do with it. It makes my hair look horrible.

Valiant_Lucy, that's fair enough. I'm in my mid to late 20's, so it's all good.

Kate, it might be that. If it makes your hair noticeably heavier, it probably won't work for you.
Val, I've seen your hair type. No shampoo will NOT work for you.

sweeet. have you ever tried Aussie? My hair is fairly temperamental and I usually have to rotate shampoos every few months or I did until I started using Aussie. The Moist is really good for when there's limited humidity in the air here and I also use the Aussome Volume. Aussie's also the only hairspray that doesn't virtually instantly make my scalp itch.
