Switched-On Schoolhouse. She learned about it on Christianbook.com and wondered if any of you guys had ever used it, and if you liked it, etc.
Hm, I've heard of it, but haven't used it; and I don't think I know anyone who has either. Sorry.
ILF: I've never had a tutor... Just my parents and myself. My parents oversee everything, but I pretty much learn it by myself somewhere... We're not classroom-oriented if you know what I mean.

Hey everyone! I've been home-schooled all my life and I really love it. For the most part, my parents have home-schooled me, but I do take two online classes from an online Christian school, which is really neat and a lot of fun. I also take a couple of classes from a Christian teacher who offers several science courses for Christian home schoolers. My parents monitor all my schoolwork, though and I would not survive Algebra or Geometry if it wasn't for my dad. Home-school is awesome and I really love it!
So glad to see so many other home-schooled kids here on Narnia Web!!!

I was homeschooled up until 6th grade. I liked it a lot, but by 6th grade I wanted out lol. 7th to 9th grade I went to a small private school (kind of a horror experience), and then 10th to 12th I went to a public high school (didn't like that either really). Now I'm in college and love it.
NG, in response to your question about Switched-On-Schoolhouse: it's been a while, but we used it for a bit. I don't know if it was just us, but we had a lot better success with English and History with it than with Math and Science. I'm not sure, though, if that's because we were using the computer curriculum and it's hard to learn that stuff on a computer or not. (If I remember, there are Life-pacs and computer curriculum and the Academy). It could've just been us, too. But the English and History were good, I think---the state history I rather liked.
I hope that was at least somewhat helpful.
And, ILF, I had a literature tutor for a few years (my mom could've taught us that no problem, but for various reasons, we decided to do this) and took math at a local Christian school for a couple of years (they offered high school classes to homeschooled students, which is something the local public school would never even consider). Also, I took a couple of classes at university while still in highschool, but I'm not sure if that's what you meant or not.
God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay.

I think they had tutor back a while ago because most the movies i have seen them in are movies set before the 1950's.
Oh to be sure, tutors have been around for centuries, multiple millennium even, but when I get a vision of a tutor I think of a full time one, I never considered the possibility that they could be utilized for just a few subjects.
Full time ones I wouldn't necessarily consider home schooling in the sense of the term as it is commonly known now, but from the answers here, I guess having a part time one would be considered homeschooling, depending of course on how the rest of your education is handled.
ILF I dont have a tutor.

This is awesome! I didn't know there'd be that many fellow homeschoolers here on NW. I've gone to schools and been homeschooled intermittenly throughout the years, but my favorite has definitely been homeschooling. I'm so grateful that I get to finish out highschool at home!

Hullo, Riley Tea and welcome to the Forum! (May I call you Riley?) I was also quite surprised to find so many homeschoolers on here. It makes it all the more exciting! Homeschooling is definitely interesting (especially when you're at home all day stuck with siblings, it can get a bit annoying, but it makes you even more close to them. ).
I hope you enjoy the Forum, and join us often!

I'm homeschooled!
On the subject of tutors, I've never actually had an in-person-very-expensive one, but I've done an online course, and my aunt helped me with math several years ago. She's a math whiz. Right now we're enrolled with a school, so technically my siblings and I are not homeschooled, despite the fact that we do all our school at home. We have a teacher, but she's mostly in charge of just letting the Ministry of Education know that we're learning all the right things... and... other stuff.
As for Switched-on-Schoolhouse - my mother is quite adamant that SOS is terrible. Don't ask me why, I don't know.

Yeah, I feel sick now... I just finished writing a long reply post, and clicked preview before I was going to post... so my mind thought that I'd posted it and x-ed out of the window... all of it lost! GAHHH!! Oh well.
Thank you for the welcome, PELS and NG!
PELS: Yes, you may definitely call me Riley! haha definitely know what you mean! Yes, I plan on coming back quite often!!
NG: So the really long thing I wrote was about my family's experience with SOS... I'll try to remember it all:
My family used the SOS program for about 2 years, 5-6 years ago (as such, some of this info may be considered outdated). We loved that the lessons were already ready according to the curriculum (so no hours spent trying to put lessons together), MUCH less paperwork, the students and teacher have separate sides (the teacher's is locked/guarded by a password), grades are easy to print out, there's almost instant feedback on tests and quizzes (except for the essay and long answer questions, which are graded by the teacher on her respective side), and there's the option for online interactive features throughout the lessons (at the time, the computer we used for school was not connected to the internet; we got along fine without them though, they are just a fun addition.)
So it sounds great.... HOWEVER, we did have issues with bugs in the program sometimes, othertimes problems with our own computer, etc. Also, with having schoolwork on CDs and computers, as nice as it is to not have as much paperwork to worry about, you're stuck when either program or computer don't work, or even when the power goes out. Of course, most of the bugs may have been fixed by now.
So in any case, I hope this gave you a bit more information to work off of!
