In Australia, we start the school year in late January/early February (depending on whether it's public or private), so it's weird knowing that people in the Northern Hemisphere start the school year in September. Starting at the beginning of the year makes perfect sense to me but we don't get much snow here (and of course our Summer is around Christmas time).

Do they have school through June/July/August in Australia? I think I've heard that schools in other bits of the world don't take off school for those months and instead have blocks of school and then week-long breaks.

I'm homeschooled, and I follow the usual public school American way: study for nine months, vacation for three. :)

The Australian school year is generally as follows:

Term 1 - 27th January (public schools)/early February (private) to 2nd April
2 week Easter break

Term 2 - 19th April to 2nd July
2 week break

Term 3 - 19th July to 24th September
2 week break

Term 4 - 11th October to 10th December
7-8 week Christmas holidays

*Rinse and repeat*

Wow, interesting schedule, Warrior 4 Jesus. In Russia we start school in September and finish it in May. I noticed you have a very long Christmas break and no summer break, why is that?

De_De,
Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so our Christmas holidays coincide with our Summer time. Just as well too because we have incredible heat then which no student (or teacher) should have to sit through.

I start school whenever, but it's usually around the beginning of September or the end of August. I usually end around the middle of May.

I love school though, and I love making my own schedule for every day. My favorite subject is probably Math, reading, or spelling. (I am in Algebra 1, but I am supposed to be in Algebra 2).

The schooling schedules are probably different because a lot of us (Westerners) are on an agrarian calendar. That is, back in the days when everyone had a farm, kids had to take off the whole summer because they had to spend the all-important harvesttime months helping with the crops, etc. The habit has continued even though we don't live on farms anymore. I guess it makes sense that Australians would have it different, though I never thought of it before. The Australian calendar is better and more practical in my opinion.

I, too, have started school. We've already zipped through the Origin of Species (Darwin) and now we're reading Darwin on Trial (Johnson). Thrilling stuff. :p

I'm home schooled, and enjoy every bit of it. Wherever I go, people ask me how I like it. I can truthfully tell them, I love it!! :)
And they always are shocked after they ask who teaches me, and I say no one.

well, this school year is good so far.....
today was the end of my second week. I still can't believe that this will be my last year! wow! I have dreamed of my last year in school for years!
:D
I am doing a lot of poem writing as assignments and I wanted to share a short one I did (it's a poem of the description of the Dawn Treaderin the VotDT book:

"The Picture in the Bedroom"
by Libby Hoffman

A ship sailing on ocean blue
It's single sail a purple hue

And prow shaped like a dragon's head
The sides are green where the wings end
