[Closed] Homeschoolers

I live in Narnia: In my house we teach ourselves most everything. My mom helps my little sister, and grades our tests and things. Also, a Christian science teacher who used to work at the school we attended for two years, teaches math and science classes for home schoolers. My mom is a stay-at-home mom and my dad works.

We don't have a time frame, either. One of the great things about homeschooling is working at your own pace. For most subjects, I'm pretty fast and still get good grades. It would be pointless to set aside a whole hour for something that will take me twenty-five minutes, tops.

That's very long-winded, but I thought that might be helpful for non-home schoolers, who don't understand homeschooling.

I totally agree with you. In a lot of schools they ban Christianity and I personally believe that we should do something about it. If you install Christianity into a child when he is young, he will usually remember it for the rest of his life. :D

Not to be rude, but in what schools are Christianity banned? I went to public high school for all four years, and while teachers don't lead prayer in class or teach about christianity from anything other than a historical perspective, there was never any feeling that any religion had been "banned."

Also, not ragging on homeschooling (I was homeschooled from 3rd-6th grade), but it is possible to maintain a christian lifestyle and a strong moral compass even in a public school setting. My school had plenty of christian organizations on campus, and I was also involved in my church youth group. Sure, there is more of a temptation to give into certain peer pressures, but there are still plenty of opportunities to not only grow in your faith, but also to be a witness to others.

I go to a public school and 2 of my friends are christain, they don't ban it but they just don't teach it because it could be against other peoples religion.

Thanks WinterStar, I see now. :)
I agree with bkey. Christianity certainly isn't banned in my secondary school and my primary school was even C of E (Church of England). My secondary school isn't church of england, but it does include Christians such as myself and also Muslims and other religions. We are taught about Christianity and Islam in RS, and then we can make up our own minds about what to believe, I think this is a good system :)

do your parents teach you? And if they do, don't they have to work?

The school program we use allows us to most of our school on our own. Our older sister usually supervises us but other than that we work ourselves. Our mom doesn't work so she is there to give us a hand too, and she also teaches us our Russian subjects (we sort of juggle two curriculums the ACE program which is American so of course all the subjects are in english, and we also have our Russian sujects like Russian grammer, history, literature and so on)

De_De: wow! you have a set time for when school starts? don't get me wrong, we're not careless, but we don't start usualy until 10:00 or 10:30.....

Well....De_De didn't quite put it right, we have a set time in theory, but in practice we don't usually get down to school till ten. Unless of course our older sister decides to be stricter than usual and presses us to get to school at the set time. In fact lately we only been getting to school at 11:00
bkey, ILoveFauns and I_LiVe_iN_NarNia:P when De_De wrote that, I don't think she meant that if you go to public school you can't be a Christian, but more like they have taken it out of schools. And also she wasn't speaking for all the public schools in the world, just about a few that she heard of. Of course you can be a Christian in public schools, neither I nor she doubts that. We have plenty of Christian friends who go to public school.
(oh and as an after thought, just in case you are wondering wether or not Christianty exsits in Russian public schools, yes it does. Children are allowed to pray, read the Bible and so on. In some schools they even teach the creation theory along with the evolution theory. They sort of give you both sides and then let you make up your mind on which one you'll believe in)

always be humble and kind

I have a semi set time for when I start school. For the first two years of high school, I got up about 5:45, went to the pool and swam until seven, and then came home, did my makeup and hair and all that, and tried to start school by seven thirty or seven forty-five. Now that this is my senior/junior year (graduating a year early), I only have three classes and I get up about 6:30 or 6:45 and try to start school by seven thirty or eight. I do other stuff for excersize now though I should start swimming again.

You can still have a good education if you go to public school. You can still be Christian if you go to school. You can still be "raised right" if you go to public school. You can still be moral if you go to public school. It just can be harder to train your children like that especially if they go to public school when they're really little. Some boys I was babysitting (3 and 4 years old) were saying mild cuss words to each other. I told their mom and she was like, "I'm going to have to talk to them; they must have picked it up at school." My family was out with another family and their little boy (who was 6 I think) said, "What the" but didn't finish it and his mom was like, "No, we don't talk that way." Little kids pick things up fast and that's one of the reasons I think I'll homeschool my kids for at least kindgarten and the first three or four grades if not longer.

I've heard all about the "Christianity is being banned," but I've never seen it. True, I live in Alaska but I've traveled and I've never heard stories from anyone I've met about Christianity being banned (and I've gone on short term missions trips where I meet thirty people in two days).

My mom and dad taught me when I was younger. Up until eighth grade. Well, they kind of did. We have books of course and math DVD's that were basically a guys voice and a whiteboard that you saw problems and notes appear on. Neither of my parents went to college for very long. My dad had one semester of Bible school and my mom had one year of college but they went to school and they have common sense and they know what to teach you up until then.

Now that I'm in high school, I use the Abeka DVD program. I also took two college classes this year. My dad owns his own business and he works in his shop that's about twenty yards from our house. My mom is a stay at home mom kind of. She does the paper work for my dad's business and is a Mary Kay consultant.

When my sister and I were little, he taught us Bible and science and my mom did the rest. Now with my little sibs, my mom pretty much does everything exept be prinicipal. Dad does that.

My parents basically believe in the three R's until you hit high school and it's worked for my sister and me so there's no reason it won't work for my three little siblings. We got some history with the books we read. Dad did some science with my older sister and I when we were young but they haven't done it with my younger siblings.

^^ there are LOTS of people who go to public school who are Christians! I ahve many friends who are and they tell me it's hard, but they have a mission field right there with all their un-saved friends! there are pros and cons to both homeschooling and public school!

Hey everyone! I'm a homeschooler from NZ! I went to a private school though for most of my life but I'm loving homeschooling! Someone mentioned about homeschoolers having friends - that's one of the most common questions you get. "What about their socialisation?" I get quite a lot, I can tell you that! ;)

americangirlemmie, that's not exactly what LH was saying. She was saying that both types of schooling have their pros and cons. If you go to a private Christian school, it's almost guaranteed that many of the students will be non-Christians. This allows for some amazing opportunities.

narnian_at_heart, you must have been extraordinary disciplined to wake up before 6am! Kudos to you.

Thanks, warrior4Jesus. I did miss a few days.

Last semester, I took a college English class. For my final paper, I wrote about the myths of homeschooling. One of the myths I debunked was the social myth. The kind of socialization that takes place in a public school is with numerous other children the same age. There is tremendous peer pressure on children to say the right thing, wear the right clothes, and act the right way. If they don’t, they are rejected as not good enough and “different” which isn't very good socialization.

Also in a study published, HS and PS children were video taped playing together and then a group of counselors, who didn't know which were HSed and which were PSed studied them. The conclusion was that the homeschooled children had much fewer behavioral problems than the public schoolers did.

Also, I found a source that said PSed children tend to be socialized horizontally, and temporarily, into conformity with their immediate peers. Home educators seek to socialize their children vertically, toward responsibility, service, and adulthood.

Here's a few of my sources if anyone wants to look at the information.

Some homeschools are terrible, some are great. The same goes for public and private schools. That said, I like the idea of there being no bullying in homeschooling. When I'm a fully-qualified teacher I'm going to crack-down on bullying (it darkened much of my life, so I won't tolerate it).

Wow,I feel like a minority for being a public-schooler here. ;))
I hope you don't mind me asking the occasional question about homeschooling. I'm curious. :)

What do you all think is the general attitude of homeschoolers towards school compared to that of students in public school? I know that many students in public schools would rather not be there. Do you think homeschoolers are more positive or negative about school? Or is it about the same?

The peopel that are most likley to be bullied are better off in homeschooling but then again soemtimes a kid will get bullied at oen shcool but at another he/she will be fine. When my brother went to my schooo their were so many fight(like punchign fights) but know theirs none, his grade and the one above his were terrible.
