Briefly (I looked for the Musician's topic to move our discussion there, but it has been closed for awhile now) ...
I taught piano to both children and adults for years, and also organized and taught music to pre-school children, which was a blast. After I moved on to other areas, moms would come up to me and say felt that these lessons were integral in their child(ren) loving music. It was worth all that work! I also worked very, very part-time (8 hrs/week) for years in a book/music store, which was a wonderful growing and learning experience.
But in our family (both growing up and my own family now) music was/is a hugely important part of our lives. Our kids all learned instruments and used to 'jam together' downstairs, which was great fun. Although, one of them being a drummer, in no way could I use the phone with they were making music together. Now, as adults, they all still consider music a very important aspect of their lives.
Listening to great music has always been part of my/our life too. As well as singing together, making harmony. I have wonderful memories of traveling on a long trip with my parents and siblings with my folks breaking into song (Dad harmonizing; Mom on melody; us kiddos doing whatever came out ) ... beautiful! It is sad how families singing together is quite a thing of the past now, and we do not want to see that die, so we make a point of sharing it with others, too.
Even now, I have sheet music spread all over our dining room table in preparation for a worship service this Sunday with a special needs community of people in town. We do this once/month and treasure both our singing time with them, as well as the devotional. I make an intentional point of including some of the treasured old hymns, as well as some of the excellent new ones.
While my focus is on piano, and, at times in my life, voice, I have a desire to learn the harp and/or cello. We live in a more rural area, though, so there are no such teachers close by, too bad.
Btw, my love of music theory began at a young age, and these courses were my favourite at university. I still thoroughly enjoy theory and the analysis of music pieces to this day.
Well, this is not as brief as I thought , because music inundates so much of my life on a daily basis. I could write loads more, ha, but better stop there, as this topic is mainly to get to know newcomers. 'Though, I guess it can be used as getting to know us NWeb veterans, too.
So, again, welcome, sirsirensong.
