In a recent interview with Guillermo del Toro, (who was formally going to direct The Hobbit) he explains some of the ideas he had for his version of The Hobbit.
I think it is very interesting to see what may have been.
After reading this I am even more happy and relieved that Peter Jackson is directing instead of Del Toro. #:-s

Guillermo del Toro: Thorin
Even the major characters of “The Hobbit” bore del Toro’s watermark. In one sketch, the dwarf Thorin, depicted in battle, wore a surreal helmet that appeared to be sprouting antlers. “They’re thorns—his name is Thorin, after all,” he said.

I was always skeptical of Del Toro. I don't like his style and worried how it would go with the look aside of LOTR. and thorns? Just because his name is Thorin? Thankfully he is out though.

I love Del Toro's style but the helmet with thorn-like antlers is cliche and a lame idea (seriously, dude?) I also don't go for the idea of painting in the sky digitally. It would make for an interesting look but I'd prefer something more realistic. I quite like the idea of an unusual-looking Smaug though.

A "slavish" adaptation would be boring? Buh-bye, glad you're not on the project anymore. :P Seriously, has he even ever encountered members of the Tolkien fandom? If he just did whatever he pleased and ignored the book's storyline, they would lose a ton of money. It's not like the Narnia fandom, in which one can safely ignore the tiny fandom and count on the non-book fans to make up the box office figures.

I had read that Del Toro was going to pull much of Smaug's design from the old Disney flick Dragonslayer, and really, Vermithrax Perjorative was a mean, green, machine. ;)) In my opinion that's the best dragon I've seen on the silver screen, so it'd be logical to assume they'd draw from it. By the same token I understand he wants to be original too...I just hope he doesn't change too much or else the story can quite potentially lose something.

Wow, I'm glad Del Toro isn't directing The Hobbit! Though his idea of Smaug's eyes being "sculpturally very hidden" is interesting, for the most part his ideas are too much reinventing the wheel. :p Tolkien's work is unique (and beloved!) enough that it doesn't need changing so much.

Another clip of The Eagle has been released. It's not very cheery watching, I'm afraid.

Spoiler
Marcus and Esca arguing because Esca knew all along where to find the eagle. They then get into a regular fisticuffs.
Very un-bookish.

I've been afraid that would happen :/ Apparently movie's aren't complete without arguing.
I haven't finished the book yet (though I've really enjoyed what I've read so far), but that seems very . . .out of character for both of them. [-(

The Transformers tv spot is awful! I'm sorry but I just don't like Michael Bay, he's not a good director at all. He has no vision of plot or story. Just by watching that really short tv spot you can consider yourself already seen the movie. That's Mr. Bay for you.
