*races in at the last minute* Hmmm... worst veggies.... well, to tell you the truth, i'm not a fan of many vegetables. (ducks head in shame) I know, bad Gen! There are some vegetables I haven't even tried yet! But, the ones on my all time yuck list??
- Whole tomatoes, like the stuff put on sandwiches
- Cauliflower
- Broccoli (unless cooked a certain way) *shudders*
- Mushrooms! *gags*
- Hugely chopped, or raw onions. *gags again*
- Peppers
- Celery
- Water chesnuts = EW
On my like list is
- Corn
- Peas
- Cooked, tiny onions
- Carrots
- Spinach
- Certain beans
- Potatoes (I'm really starting to like them mashed recently. I used to hate mashed potatoes)
- Lettuce
- Red onion (only in salads)
- Radishes (currently only in salads)
- Garlic

*races in beside TGW to say that she loves water chestnuts ... not plain, as much, but in casseroles. They add such a contrasting, crunchy texture to the more mushy—albeit yummy—texture of that type of dish*

It seems to me that the only other veggie to adapt into a dessert so easily is pumpkin (though of course I can't forget carrot cake. That is delicious!).
Last Thanksgiving I made Carrot Pie from my own homegrown carrots. It was very, very similar to Pumpkin Pie and I don't think anyone would have noticed the difference if I hadn't said anything. I've also had Sweet Potato Pie which happens to be my favorite of the three.
Ooooh, I would have loved to have a slice of your carrot pie! I love carrots, but prefer them raw to cooked, unless they're in a dessert.
TheGentleWarrior, you don't care for mushrooms? I love them! They really fill salads and stir frys. I also like the big ones on their own, especially on Fridays when I don't eat meat. You can almost see how vegetarians do it when you bite into one of those thick juicy portabellas.
Really, you've got to give 'em a second chance.

Carrot Pie, eh? sounds kinda gross.....
I like raw carrots!

carrot pie sounds kinda good. We make a delicious tomato pie- even though I don't like cooked tomatoes I eat it b/c everything else in it is so delicious (including a delicious sauce of mayo and cheese and a potato crust )
Beets would have to top my list. Just smelling them makes me a little nauseated, and the pickled type (which is most popular in our house) is the worst. Ugh.
Which brings me to my beet story. When I was little, I saw something that looked like cranberry sauce on the salad buffet at a restaurant. So I took some. It was, without a doubt, the most awful cranberry sauce I have ever had in my life. One of the few times I didn't clean my plate. (Of course, it wasn't cranberry sauce at all, but y'all figured that out, right?)
I totally agree with you! Beets are like my worst favorite veggie in THE WORLD! Well, onions make it a close tie!!
TGW, we shall have to duel on the subject of water chestnuts! They are so yummy and crunchy!
fantasia_kitty, I've had rhubarb in a crisp, and that was pretty good, but it's awful sweet!

Doh! Yes, I love Veggie Tales. "I'm Bob the Tomato, and I'm Larry the Cucumber, and today kids, we're going to talk about ..." Broccoli, celery, got to be - Veggie Tales!
Wow, I have to say I'm in shock - I honestly didn't think there'd be much Veggie Tales in Australia. My younger siblings watch at least one a week, but everyone in my family likes to watch them. Maybe this disccusion belongs in the movie thread. *starts to plan next post in said thread*
Okay, back on topic- I love rhubarb. I can't believe I forgot to put rhubarb and black olives on my list. My grandparents have some rhubarb in their garden, and last summer when we were there we had rhubarb crisp. Mumm. My Mom makes strawberry-rhubarb jam, which is delicious. We also make sauce to go on ice cream, bread, and pie with rhubarb. Sadly, we can never acquire enough rhubarb each spring to make all of the items I mentioned. So, we have crisp and jam more than anything else.
Has anyone ever had green tomato pie? When we lived in Kansas one of our neighbors gave us some green tomatoes and Scarlet made a pie with them. It was actually surprisingly good, with cool whip of course. Kind of like apple pie without the apple flavor.
@Horse_Lover - that crisp was probably made with a LOT of sugar. Ours is never that sweet; it tends toward the tangy side. Rhubarb plain is VERY sour, which is why it's usually made into sweets, I think. *idly wonders if there is a Good Eats episode on rhubarb*

Interesting to see it in all the different categories like that! And some of them I'd never even heard of before, much less tasted!
It is interesting to see all the different categories. I think the idea behind it is that one is not only supposed to eat so many servings of vegetables but they need to be from different categories as well. Talk about making things hard. I hadn't heard of several of them either and haven't tasted quite a few.
I forgot to mention that I don't like vegetable juice. (at least what I have tried, which was a mixture of fruit and veggie juice). I think it claimed one couldn't taste the vegetables. I could. (like wolfloversk I use veggies because I have trouble spelling vegetables )
Although I will eat it, I don't like corn (the bright yellow kind) of the cob all that much. It tastes so much better on the cob. I'm not sure why. I do like the pale yellow (white?) corn of the cob.
For the most part I like raw veggies or cooked (of the ones that are eaten either way), except broccoli and cauliflower are far better cooked. (as well as onions as I mentioned earlier) I like carrots raw or cooked.
