So...games I played while growing up :)

As I said before, I'm not much of a game person now, and I wasn't a big game person when I was younger either. At least not traditional board games (I call them "bored games" ).

When I was little I was a pretty decent checkers player, my brother and I would often play with my Dad (who was pretty good, now that I think about it I think he probably let us win a lot of the time ;)) ).

So yeah...I didn't play many games, at least not that I was THRILLED about--we usually only played games when company was over or something.

We did have games though---they just weren't "Games-games" :P I invented a game called "Rabbit, Rabbit, Wolf" which my brother, a friend or two and I would play outside in the summer. The premise of the game was that there was a wolf, and there were rabbits. The wolf was trying to eat the rabbits. The rabbits had a few lives (usually five, I think altho this may have been too high as I hardly remember a rabbit ever turning into a wolf--which is what would happen if they ran out of lives)...for some reason I was ALWAYS the wolf. I can literally never remember a time when I was a rabbit. ;)) The rabbits had a "safe house" which in our yard was a spot inbetween two big fir trees. They would venture out of their house to gather "food" etc and I would try to catch them. We had absolutly LOADS of fun with this, and the nice thing was no matter how many kids there were, I was always the wolf and there were just more kids to try and catch ;))

Another popular game that my brother and my neighborhood friend played one summer was called "The Radio Show". We would all climb up on top of our swingset in our backyard, and we'd start by belting out as loudly as we could-- "HELLOOOO THIS IS THE RADIO SHOW!!" then we'd all sing songs as loudly as we could and tell jokes. While we didn't live in a subdivision, the houses were fairly close together and I'm surprsied the neighbors didn't come over and complain ;)) At the end of the "show" we'd call out "IS THERE ANYBODY LISTENING?? IF SO, SAY HELLO!!" this would be repeated several times, we kept hoping and hoping somebody would respond but sadly (or thankfully :P) no one ever did...

---A game I enjoy now that I forgot to put in my original post is Balderdash. I haven't played that for quite some time but I REALLY enjoy it! :D

I could write a novel on this one. While I wouldn't consider myself an avid gamer (which usually refers to video games), I've still played more than my share so here I go.

Console Video Games:

I'm a play solo type of person, so I never got into the MM (massive multiplayer) games that are often seen in TV ads. My first exposure to video games was Mario on the NES. It was used for a physical thearapy training device for me (I couldn't do two things like sit up and eat as a little kid.). The NES fixed that real quick and I was a pro. I've beaten Mario and Mario 2 for the NES without any warps or without dying. I've almost done it with Mario 3. I've followed Nintendo ever since and currently have a GameCube and Wii. My favorite games however are Zelda and Final Fantasy. There are only three Zelda games I haven't beaten without some degree of challenging myself and those three are for the older GameBoys. I am currently enjoying my fourth run through Final Fantasy XII, which is the longest linear game I have ever played (average play through is 90-120 hours). I am really looking foward to the next Zelda game slated to come out in November for the Wii.

Computer Games:

I had Master of Orion II back in the day. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it ended up being way too easy or way too hard. I would usually custom my races because I loved the creativity of the Psilons but also liked other things that they didn't get. The bulk of my Computer gaming days was when we had an Apple II GS. One of my favorites was a shooter game (like Galaxia) called Journey to Calibus. You played a little spaceship blasting your way through a bunch of enemies, solving puzzles for your next destination, then fighting a boss at the end of each stage. I loved the music for that game.

Outdoor Games:

I haven't played many outdoor games that aren't a sport, but how can you go wrong with Ultimate Frizbee? As a kid, I loved playing 'Capture the Flag' and 'Kick the Can'. Because of my speed, I always made a great decoy, drawing half the other team in attempt to capture me.

Card Games:

On the computer, I play FreeCell and Spider Solitare. My current FreeCell record is winning 44 straight games (not in one sitting), but I remember a while back breaking 50. On Spider Solitare, I always do the difficult setting and I drive people nuts when I can solve it. Growing up, I'd play Slap Jack, Speed, Liar-Liar and several others. But a real fun one that I've done is called Hand and Foot.
In Hand and Foot, you require at least four decks shuffled together. Each person takes two piles of 11 cards each. One is a hand, the other is a foot. The idea is to make 'books' of seven or more of the same cards each. The goal was to make as many books as you could and go 'out' before your opponent. But you need to make at least three 'clean' books without wilds, and at least two 'dirty' books with wilds. 2's and Jokers were wilds and you could make a 'clean' book of 2's. You first had to go out with your 'hand' then go out again with your 'foot'. In each turn, you either draw two or take seven from the discard pile and discard one. 3's were the challenging number as a black 3 is worth 0 points and a red 3 is worth -300. If you want to know more about how to play this game, let me know and I'll go into more details. But my sister and I spent one summer trying to reach 1,000,000 points (10,000 is a typical sum for a game).

Board Games:

I've played quite a few. Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Cranium, Stratego, Monopoly, Risk, and others I can't think of off the top of my head. I would say one of my favorites was Stratego. In part because I loved the strategy involved.

Well, that's enough for now.

RE: Cribbage: We once got a set, but lost the instruction manual on how to play. Somehow looking up instructions on the computer never came to our minds, but it's given away now. Pity, it sounds fun.

To add a few:
I'd say Chess, but CS and I totally made up our own rules (from hearing the real rules, we adapted our own version that was...more or less different.) We were playing a friend and nearly scared him with our rules, because he thought he had it all wrong. ;)) I still need to learn the right way!

Dodge Ball

Boggle is another fun one.

And then the regular made up games such as "Shark" in the pool, "Don't jump on the lava!" in the living room, various adventure games, and acting games. One in particular was we'd make a chocolate factory with mud as the confectionary. ;))

Also, in acting class we have a game called Monster where one person is chosen to be the Monster (others don't know who it is) and then everyone goes around shaking each others' hands. When the person who is Monster decides that they want to make someone collapse, they shake their hand and then tap it in a non-visible fashion, then the person collapses. It has to be done in a wise way to keep the game going for long.
The only video games I own are the Narnia ones, both of which are fun. But I enjoy playing Mario Kart and such games on Wii.

I know I got 104 seconds once on mindsweeper, but I think I broke 100 once. I will say that I have not beat 91, but I have gotten close.

Anyone play pinball that comes with most computers? I've gotten a few score over 14 million, but I don't play it on a regular basis.

My family has a Monopoly rule that is not in the normal game. If you land on Free Parking, you get the Jackpot. The Jackpot always has a $500 to start and any time you have to pay the bank for anything like taxes or penalties from Chance/Community Chest cards goes into the Jackpot. Buying property, houses, and hotels, obviously goes to the bank. I was completely thrown off the last time I played because I was so used to that.

I saw the title of this thread and was really happy because I love board and card games. Then I started to worry when I read the first post because it started with video games and while I have played video games it has only been at other people's house or at the hospital when my sister was hospitalized for a hip infection (this was right before she started 2nd grade and I started 5th grade), I have never had Nintendo or anything similar (I'm not even sure exactly what all there is ). I too could write a novel on my favorite games. However, that would be way too long for this thread and right now I'm pretty tired (-| so for now I'll just list a few of my favorites. Feel free to ask questions because I know some of them aren't familiar to a lot of people. (I may explain them at a later date but I don't have the energy right now.) All are listed in no particular order. I don't feel like extending the mental energy to rank them)
Card Games:
Authors
Five crowns
Uno
Skipbo
Rummy (regular and gin)

Board Games:
Monopoly (Regular, Narnia, LotR (I especially like the special rules on this version), etc.)
Go for Broke
Clue
Life (especially the version we have from when my mom was a kid)
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe game (I'm not sure if that is what it is called but I don't feel like looking it up)
Narnia Stratego (although I haven't quite figured out how to play it)
Prince Caspian the Quest for the Throne
The Hobbit (not sure on the name again)
Trivial Pursuit (Disney, LotR, additions that I think I'll know enough answers to make it worth my while, (I really want them to come out with a Narnia version)

...to be continued (no that's not a game, it's about my post.) ;) ;))

Ahh minesweeper- Let me see on this computer my stats are:
Beginner- Best time: 31, Win Percentage 69%
Intermediate- Best Time: 335, Win Percentage 100%
Expert- Best time 947, Win Percentage 4%

I'll have to look up my stats on our other computer because I've been playing it longer on there, and the Win percentage will be more accurate since this one has a touch screne and I have a problem with accidentally clicking on a spot I don't want to. I have to say I'm nowhere near as good as FK

Another game on the computer that I like is Mahjong, although I'm also very bad at it

I am probably the only NWebber on these forums willing to put Pokemon on that list. And yet, years after the "fad" died down, it still remains one of my favorite games ever.

Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution also claim spots amongst my favorite games, both for the musical aspects of those games. Rock Band has been instrumental *cough* in expanding my musical horizons, as well as providing a new level of appreciating said music. Both games, especially Dance Dance Revolution, also have a great physical element that I highly enjoy.

As far as card games go, Uno is a classic. Another favorite of mine is Mao. It is basically Crazy Eights (on which Uno is based), but with the ability to make up rules as the game goes on. Without telling other people those rules. It gets crazy. Apples to Apples is another great game for instant hilarity.

Past that, I also enjoy playing along to games of Wheel of Fortune. ;)
