It was really cold today over in NY (the state) too. Although it wasn't snowing or ice raining or anything like that. Fairly calm weather, not too much wind, just cold. The snow is still on the groung, which is making me ecceedingly happy. There is also tracks every where, cat, squirrel, bird, deer, you name it. Another good thing about the winter, it is easier to track stuff and see what has been in the area.
Tonight I think it's cloudy out cause you really can't see any stars and the ground is much darker than usual for the winter. I don't think its windy, and its not percipitating.
*edit* PS sorry I don't know the exact temperature, but believe me its cold.

This cold snap continues over much of the eastern two-thirds of the US; a number of below-freezing nights threaten the Florida citrus crop.
Our weather people are talking about a "January thaw" this week - it may actually get up to freezing one of these days! And it's nice to have a few nights where it doesn't go below 0F/-17C.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
a January thaw would be nice.....
it's supposed to get in the 40's here soon! yay!

It was freezing out today, it even snowed a littlebit. It wasn't as bad yesterday. Aye... another cloudy night, I dn't mind clouds but I haven't really looked at the stars recently.

No stargazing, wolfloversk? Sorry to hear that! The evenings have been hazy and even foggy here because of the warm weather. It's 30F/-1C right now; the melting snow is adding moisture to the atmosphere.
People in Africa, India, and China enjoyed an annular solar eclipse today (one that would be total, but the moon is just a little too far away to cover the sun, so it makes a ring in the sky instead). Check out a brief video here, as well as the Spaceweather photo gallery beginning here.

Well, it's still cloudy, but it's not too cold out. Ooo... Lucky people who got to see the eclipse, good for them.
There are rabbit and cat tracks in the snow, and it's still daylight out.

We're going through a Jan thaw session too, I'm kind of sad about it though since winter came late this year, again. If you listen you can hear the water falling off our roof. Still cloudy, this is starting to bug me, lots of clouds, but no percipitation, very strange.

It snowed today. YAHOO!!!!
As you guys can see I'm happy about that. The snowflakes looked just like the ones in LWW, especially the ones that were falling in front of the pine trees.

We got some freezing rain today, so it got slippery. I was studying by the window this afternoon when I saw one of my poor neighbors slip and fall on her butt while getting her mail! She was ok so I didn't feel too bad for laughing.
It was my turn to wake up to freezing rain this morning, with quite a crust of it on my car. However, since it's all nice and toasty here now (35F/2C), most of it has melted.
During the first half of January, the night skies were often clear here. Now we're balancing those scales, with a week or so of cloudy skies in the forecast.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
We have a chilly drizzle going on here in El Paso. It's not doing much, but wind and the rain make me not want to be outside.
Be watching for the release of my spiritual warfare novel under a new title: "Call to Arms" by OakTara Publishing. A sequel (title TBD) will shortly follow.
For us, January 2010 has been a most unusual month: mostly grey, brown, no snow (the little we had on the ground melted awhile ago)—not even flurries lately. *weeps* It has fluctuated between quite cold -20C/-4F (with the wind chill) to a few degrees above freezing ... almost unheard of for the typically coldest and snowiest month in a southern Ontario winter. And we usually get a February thaw, not a January thaw.
wolfloversk, wow! Quite the time you had during the ice storm last year but, like you say, it must have been kind of fun and exciting at the same time, even with the inconveniences. Glad you all stayed safe. Also, you are fortunate to be able to see so many animal tracks where you live. Are you on a few acres? I'm presuming if this is the case, there isn't much light pollution where you are (lucky duck!), which makes night-sky gazing all the more spectacular.

That sounds just about perfect. Which reminds me, on the day that LWW opened in December/05, it was snowing like that: Narnian snow. I was thrilled this happened on opening day of the film.

Freezing rain in a few areas, hmm? We haven't had that type of precipitation this year yet. For us it usually comes in either November or March.
There haven't been many star-gazing nights for us lately, sadly. But when there is one, I revel in it, and am known to bundle up in my winter coat (which I seldom wear otherwise) and sit in the backyard on a patio chair looking up once again in awe of the sight of the winter constellations. One night coming back from my walk I saw a beautiful sight: far to my right (in the west) bright Jupiter was setting; far to my left (in the east) red-tinged Mars was rising, and then the giant Hunter poised in the sky between them in the south. So beautiful! Then the other night we had another rare clear-ish sky and I was able to view an ISS pass, which skirted Cassiopeia on its way south to meet Orion. It was a bright one, too, at -3.5 magnitude.
People are saying we will be paying for this lack of snow well into the spring. Fine by me. The first forecast of a storm is for later next week. Whether that will actually materialize remains to be seen, but I keep hoping.
EDIT: It looks to be a relatively clear night tonight, yay, so Jo heads over to heavens-above to check for passes. Ah good, there is another bright ISS pass in about an hour (-3.5 again).
