Happy New Year!

I spent Christmas week with family at my brother's home near the North Shore of Lake Superior. Blizzard warnings prompted us to begin our trip early, to make it before the storm hit.

I'd forgotten what a couple of feet of snow looks like when you get it all at once, with it whipped around by 50 mph winds. Then it rained Christmas Eve night (something I don't think I've ever seen!), making a nice crusty layer on top of the snow that you could walk on. Then we got about 8 more inches. Talk about a winter wonderland!

(And they live about 12 miles out of town, on a small country road, so getting snowed in was a very real prospect. But we didn't, and things were cleared out enough for our return yesterday).

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

Haah... It's snowing it's been snowing since yesterday. *Jumps up and down in the air :D * I'm so excited, now if only it won't melt, and I hope noone gets in an accident.

Welcome to the Weather thread, wolfloversk! Do you get much snow where you live?

Here, the new year brought with it the kind of weather than gives our state bragging rights (at least in the Lower 48!)...temperatures close to -40 (with colder windchills), and daytime highs around 0F/-17C. (The TV weather people are making tongue-in-cheek remarks about our current heatwave, as it's now a toasty 4F/-16C). ;))

(Incidentally, the earth was closest to the sun - perihelion - over the weekend, and now we're slowly getting farther away again. Not to worry, though; the variation in distance is only about 3%).

Earlier I mentioned our Christmas storm. Here's a picture I took in the early part of the blizzard:

Wow, that's a nice lot of snow, stargazer. :) And those temperatures, whew, I think even I would have to don a coat. ;))

We are cold here, but not as cold as -40 (C and F). We're hovering right around -20C/-4F with the wind chill. And ... we received our first dump of snow yesterday ... finally! :D/ It isn't much, but it's made everything crisply white and fresh and ... *happy sigh* I love it. Halfway through the downfall last night, what I think of as 'Narnian snow' fell ... big, drifting, magical flakes. (*) The colder temps are to continue all week and into next week, with flurries and some accumulation, 'though not nearly as much as I'd like. This was December last year (2008) and what a difference for us in Dec. 2009: no snow, a few flurries ... maybe ... brown ground, brown grass, brown everything. Quite unpleasant, really. :p

Glimmie, back to the previous page, I'm glad your area received some needed rain.

stargazer, I'm already hoping for a crystal clear night on December 21, 2010, for that lunar eclipse, although our Decembers are known for their cloudiness, so that's high hoping on my part.

14" of snow, Lark! Lovely! :) Stay safe.

-eliza-, I hope you enjoyed your first white Christmas. We, sadly, didn't have one this year. Unusual for our area, it actually even rained a bit on Christmas Day. 8-|

TheGeneral, how's the ice in your area now? Subsided, I hope?

I love the winter, so I'm going to move where ever there is snow once I get out of college.

Ditto! I would love to live where there are good ol'-fashioned, snowy winters. Btw, welcome to NarniaWeb, wolfloversk, and to this Weather thread, in particular. :D And Liberty, I really think you need to move to Florida. ;))

stargazer, the weather and precipitation at your brother's place sounds so adventurous and beautiful (especially the snow part of it). Glad y'all stayed safe.

I don't mind trips to the South as a break from winter. :)

In fact, this year may be shaping up to be an "old-fashioned" kind of winter. We got another 6 inches or so of snow overnight, and here comes some more serious wind and cold:

Snow was piled so high in Iowa that drivers couldn't see across intersections and a North Dakota snowblower repair shop was overwhelmed with business as heavy snow and wind chills as low as 52 below zero [-46C] blasted much of the Midwest on Thursday....
The weather hasn't let up since sweeping into the eastern U.S. earlier this week. Five straight days of double-digit subzero low temperatures, including negative 19 [-28C], were recorded by the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen, Minn., a Twin Cities suburb.

Check out the rest here.

But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

It's pretty harsh here in Chicagoland! Lots of snow and lots of wind.

Welcome to the Weather thread, wolfloversk! Do you get much snow where you live?

First off thankyou for the warm welcome. Secondly we used to get a lot of snow, but the last 4 or 5 years have been pretty warm. We would be lucky to have an inch of snow Christmas. The exception was the ice storm last year. I don't mind snow, but I could do without the ice. Our power was out for almost a week and they closed most of the schools in the area for a while. Ours was the exception the got power back relatively quickly, but my half of the road was one of the last places in the district to get it back on. It was kind of fun because we had to be inivative, we cooked pasta and toast over the wood stove (lucky we have one.) We got water out of the creek so we could flush the toilet (it smelled awful). But it was nice to have a shower when it came back on, my friend who lives a few houses down stayed in a motel just so she could have one.

Generally we do see more snow in January and February, except for the Jan Thaw. Today it has been snowing all day, they're small flakes, but there is a lot of them. But we don't get as much snow as in the Adirondack mountains. My family rents a trailer so we go camping up there, and they get tons of snow, I think its a combonation of the lake-effect and the elevation. My dad says they leave some back roads unplowed for the snowmobiles (big buissiness up there.)

wolfloversk: if you don't mind my asking, where do you live? I live in Nashua, N.H. and we got the ice storm too!

Liberty Hoffman: North of New York City, South of Adirondack State Park, sorry, but I'm not going to get much more specific than that.
