It has been 115 degrees here for the past two days!
The day before those it was 114.
Needless to say I can't wait for the end of September to mid October when it finally starts to cool down a little bit.
The Value of myth is that it takes all the things you know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by the veil of familiarity. C.S. Lewis
It's been very hot here. Like Summer. The weather seems to do that a lot here: cold in the Summer, hot in Fall. It's like our seasons are switched.

We haven't been that hot fortunately. But our 100+ degree trend is still going. The night before last our 'low' temperature was a balmy 80 degrees. That's the overnight low which actually occurs moments before sun-rise. It will still be another month before things start cooling down.

115°, 7chronicles! That's just . I can hardly fathom that, although we did have one day this summer that hit 122°, including the heat index, but our top in July is usually 104° ... and that's more rare than not, thankfully.
at Fencer's temps, as well.
Well, I could hardly wait to get on here today, because we had the most adventurous weather last night after a very humid afternoon. A huge storm system burst through our area, giving us torrential rain, some hail in spots, relentless and continuous lightning (at the peak of the storm, the strikes were 1000 times every 2 minutes!), and glorious thunder—some tremendous blasts; others, very long, low rolls. There were funnel clouds spotted, but no touchdowns reported. It was awesome! When the "severe weather meteorologist" came on the radio, I thought "now that's the job I should have pursued".
Apparently, out of all the GTA (Greater Toronto Area, which is (2700+ square miles and 6 million people), our small city (around 175,000) was hit the worst. Thankfully there were no deaths, but lots of fallen branches—some quite large—and even some trees uprooted.
Today is much more comfortable, and very boring compared to last night. The temperatures are becoming much more pleasant over the next few days, and the lows at night in the mid-50s ... simply lovely for sleeping. And in the past week or so, I've seen more blushes of colour on the tips of leaves—a small taste of the glorious autumn season to come.

LOTS had a storm ride and 7chronicles the big heat.
Got home tonight at 7:00pm and it was exactly 100F/37.8C still after a high of 105.3F/40.7C. Hottest day of the year here. The low was a high 78.1F/25.6C.
Fortunately, the humidity is at 16% which makes the heat more tolerable.
Tomorrow is more of the same and is to continue through Monday. That would make 6-7 days straight of 100F+ highs.

We had an earthquake a few days ago, and I've lived in this state for over a decade and I've never heard of an earthquake here before. And we are preparing for Hurricane Irene. Should hit sometime today/tomorrow. I'm a bit worried- hurricanes never happen here so I don't know what to do exactly. Strange weather. The sky was bruise-colored during a storm last week and there was constant thunder and lightning. Does anyone know what that's called, when there's so much thunder and lightning?
How far away from the storm are you? I know the Carolinas are about to get hit in about an hour or so. I've lived deep inland (Colorado, now the western tip of Texas) so the only 'hurricane' experience I have when the remnants travel across Texas and give us our 'annual' rainfall in one dumping.
Not far from where I grew up, a 5.3 quake hit near Trinidad, Colorado (southern border of Colorado along I-25). They say people as far north as Colorado Springs (150 miles away) felt it. It was the largest Colorado quake in over 40 years. And here in west-Texas, about 80 miles from where I live, we had a pair of 4.3 quakes hit a few months ago. To us in our mobile home, it felt nothing more than a passing train so we didn't even notice it.

I am also preparing for Hurricane Irene here in NH. we're meant to get high velocity wind and heavy rain at the least. it's going to be crazy...I am praying that it won't cause too much damage!
stay safe, Lily!

Praying for everyone within range of the Hurricane!!!
But today was the loveliest day. It felt like San Diego. A lovely breeze, sunshine, big puffy white clouds. I love summer. Just imagining maybe living in San Diego for a month . .

We survived the hurricane! Thanks for the warm wishes, Libby! and congrats on becoming a NW master btw. We didn't lose power, thank God. Our basement probably would have flooded if we had lost power during the night. No trees fell over or anything, but we lost power at my church. My dad is a pastor and he wants to go check on everything, but the trees are blocking some important roads. Prayerfully everyone will be safe.
I survived Hurricane Irene! thank God! only downed tree limbs in my yeard and we had lots of wind and rain...and its still raining, though not as hard. we're meant to get one more burst of fierce wind, and then it should be all gone.
thanks for your prayers ela!

It's awesome to hear that the hurricane was not nearly as bad as feared. Though 11 deaths have been reported, most of those I've heard have come from fallen trees onto houses. Sad, but a storm like this could easily have been much worse.
Here in El Paso, we are still bone dry. Some parts of the city have been hammered, but where I live 30 miles outside the city, we could estimate between 2 and 2 1/2 inches of rain...since October last year. It's good in that the weeds are not returning as the Revenge of the Dark Side of Fangorn part II. I still remember about 6 or 7 years ago we had so much rain on our 18-acre campus that would could do nothing but watch the ragweed grow as tall as our homes. It was a real jungle then. Glad we don't have to do that now.
Supossedly we are expecting rain in the middle of the week. We'll see if it actually happens. But for perspective, the drought here in Texas, New Mexico and Southern Colorado is so bad that the Rio Grande's two reservoirs are almost dry. Most farming in the counties around us are already cut off form irrigation and next year, there will be only two irrigations for the entire year. That mean few if any pecan crops (which is a big crop here) and little of anything else like cotton, chilies or other stuff. It's that bad.

Here the weather has been nice. Still hot, but not as hot. It makes for a nice summer day.

Everything near my hometown is flooded. And the powers out. Nothing to major at college though Just some wind- the rain stopped. But Irene definitely took its toll near my house

Yes! And now we have some end-of-the-summer heat. This week the humidex is building up until Friday, when it's supposed to reach 100F. Not huge compared to some places, but really warm for us. Then Saturday a storm blows in and much more comfy temperatures envelop us, hurrah! If I can survive the next few days, we'll be sailing into fall after that. Sure, we could have a few toasty days sprinkled throughout September, but at least we're at the right end of summer now (for my preferences). Looking forward to scenes such as this in another month.
I'll be glad to get out on my regular morning walks again. Right now they're very sporadic because of the off-and-on heat, and I really miss them. Ah well, they'll be back on a regular basis soon enough.

Ditto! Thankfully it was somewhat dispelled before it reached NYC. Still, so very sad about those 11 deaths. Nature is truly awful/awe-ful (as in, it makes one full of awe). EDIT: Saw more photos today: whoa, there was so much damage! How scary for those many folk.
