We had a tropical storm form in the Gulf overnight. It was already a low pressure system with some rotation, but it appears to be hitting around Brownsville, but we're getting rain all the way up almost to Louisiana.
Gaston fell apart, but it doesn't mean that it won't reform or something won't form behind it. We've still got another 2 or 3 months in the season.
Cloudy today, first day without rain in a while.
Tomorrow its suppossed to be 85F and sunny.
Wed its gonna drop back down to 67F and rain
today was the first day in three days that I could walk by the lake because its been so windy and wavey recently, On the bright side I've located Glimmerglass Lagoon, which has much shorter waves and lots of interesting (and strange) wildlife.
*Edit just realized she already mentioned finding the lagoon- oops-

We are suppossed to have a 'cold front' come in this week. That translates to it is suppossed to just drop into the upper 80's. We were upper 90's yesterday, just a few degrees off the 101 record. I am so ready for 'summer' to be over. But of course here, summer is 8-9 months out of the year. Not cool (pun intended).

'Tis a bit cooler here, Fencer, should you like to travel north.
Just a few days ago we were experiencing weather much like that sandyentersNarnia summarized on the previous page: humid, with heat indices around 100F/38C, or even more.
This past weekend was gloriously clear, crisp, and even cool; whilst camping at Bear Head Lake State Park in the pines of northeast Minnesota, we had some of the proverbial 'frost on the pumpkin' early Sunday morning (actual lows were around 35F/2C). Now that's more like it! Actually being able to enjoy the evening campfires, and look at a nice dark sky...not to mention a few fall colors already beginning to show near Lake Superior.
I encountered torrential rains upon my travels south last evening; today's high was a blustery 60F/16C...soon our weather people will be talking about the wind chill once again.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.
Going camping there sounds fun, Stargazer.
Here in AK, it has not been very summery at all. The whole year until now, we've only had about a month and a half's worth of summery days. It can be sunny one day, then super rainy the next, like today and yesterday. Yesterday some of my siblings and I were playing dodgeball outside, and I even got a little sunburnt, and today it's like the first day of fall, with rain, wind, and leaves going down left and right. Not to mention there's no sign of yesterday's fun-in-the-sun. I hope winter this year is actually snowy instead of slush. Last winter was OK, but we didn't get all that much snow. Even though I like summer better than winter, I still want winter to be winter-ish.
Wow, this is like the longest post I have ever made. I am in awe of myself. (I know, sad. It's a weather post ).

*squeak squeak* The sound of my shoes on the floor. We didn't get a direct hit from Hermine, but we were on the dirty side of the storm. We got quite a bit of rain. It's moved out, but we'll have weather effects for the rest of the week.
Got to love hurricane season. Things can pop up out of nowhere.
At least we won't be behind in rain for awhile.
Sunny and windy today, keep it up weather! haha. I'm tired of rainy seasons. Last night it just rained, so I hope today it won't.

Hurrah for consistently cooler weather ... finally! I'm leaping for joy. (As one of our kids' teachers used to say for fun "Joy, oh bliss, happy ho-ho". ) After the six or seven-week heat wave (with very few breaks), Autumn-like weather has arrived. I can live again! Having not walked/jogged for nearly all summer because of the stinkin' heat, I now look forward to getting out every evening under the stars for around a half hour with the temperatures then (8:30 or 9 p.m. EDT) around 15C/59F. My 'bestest' temperature for going on a good brisk walk outside, though, is between -5 and 5C/23C and 41F. At 15C, one still tends to get sweaty partway through; not at -5 or 5, though.
Okay, getting caught up here:
@ Jo: hah that's awesome the lake is like right behind my dorm, ... You live on the Canadian side? I'm on the U.S. side. ... But frankly I love wind, so it was worth it in my opinion.
How cool the lake is that close (pun intended)! And yes, I'm on the Canadian side, so in terms of the crow flying, we're probably not that far from each other. I love wind too. Even though I can't abide the humidity, I'd rather have it be a humid day with wind than a still muggy date without. Plus, often wind means a storm is brewing.
On the bright side I've located Glimmerglass Lagoon, which has much shorter waves and lots of interesting (and strange) wildlife.
What a gorgeous name! That's like ... Narnian or something. Or, did you name it that?
Btw, wolf, your avatar is so pretty. The northern lights?
sandy, I really hope you got your ice cream!
starkat, keep up posted on any possible hurricane developments. I'm glad you're receiving some good rainfall! *listens to kat's shoes a-squeakin' across the floor*
stargazer, your camping trip sounds so lovely! 2C/35F? Ahhhhh ....
This morning, for the first time, I saw the barest hints of the leaves beginning to change. I adore this time of year. The anticipation of months of cooler weather ahead, alongside gorgeous scenery and weather patterns makes my little hobbit heart beat faster.
Hello NarnianCricket (cool username), and welcome to the Meteorology thread. I hope you get some snow this year too! *loves a good snowfall* In fact, many good snowfalls. I remember one winter within the past decade, we had a major storm once a week, and usually on a Monday. It was a marvelous winter! I'm hoping this year will be much better than last, wherein we hardly had any snow for the entire season—most unusual for here. It seemed the places that hardly ever receive snow, got it last year, taking it away from us.
Fencer, is it cooling down any bit for you?

Yes come to think of it it does sound Narnian. I don't know if that's technically its name, but I'm not the one who named it. Everyone calls it that, and that's what it says on the campus map, so I figure that must be its name.
And thanks indeed it is the northern lights.
NarnianCricket, Welcome to the weather thread! Wow, sounds like you're last winter has been similar to the recent winters in my hometown, not much snow, at least not like it used to be. But now that I'm at college here by lake Ontario I hope I get some snow. You live in Alaska? That's such a beautiful state, I would like to live there myself someday
The weather here has gotten significantly cooler Its been in the low 60's F and we've been having rain on and of all week, including the occasional thunderstorm. I admit I mis the sun's warmth, but I'd take this over the 80's F or 90's F any day. Its really windy today and looks like we may have rain again. I's supposed to be 60 F here and in my hometown its 66 F
My freind who lives about 30 minutes from my hometown (which I'm currently about 3 and a hlf hours from) says that they've been having a dry spell. And their well is going dry I hope she gets rain soon. There's a chance she'll get showers today ( ) and the temp is 61 F there.

Well, we got a little rain last night, but all that did was make it sticky. Humidity in El Paso does not mean wet like you think of humidity. It means sticky and very uncomfortable. I'd rather have full humidity than partial humidity. Same thing with being wet. I hate being partial wet. If I'm going to be wet, I want to be thoroughly wet. But it is still hot here. I'm still staying inside as long as I can until the temps at least drop into the lower 80's.

Johobbit: LOL. I didn't get my ice cream, but I just ate ice instead. Haha.
Weather today is fine, nothing weird happened and I hope it stays like this.

Ah, the Northern Lights...with this extended solar minimum, and living in the city, it's been too long since I've seen a good display.
The seasons are definitely marching on ("meteorological autumn" here begins September 1, as opposed to astronomical autumn, which begins in about 2 weeks with the equinox).
It was a pleasant 60F/16C this morning, so I took a walk in a nearby city park which has a couple miles of hiking trails. Thanks to all the rain this summer, I was surrounded by thick, lush, verdant green foliage. But upon closer inspection, the approach of fall could be seen: the deep green of some of the trees (especially birch and poplar) is beginning to fade to yellow; some of the ground plants (like milkweed and poison ivy) are likewise taking on their fall hues, and autumn wildflowers (like purple asters) were everywhere.
But all night, Aslan and the Moon gazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

That's just waaaay too hot and humid (for me anyway!).
Here it's cooling off nicely, and the lengthening nights (here in mid-northern latitudes) allow me to look to the night skies at a much more convenient time than just a few months ago.
Venus is hugging the southwest horizon after sunset right now, though I understand our Southern Hemisphere members have a much better view of it. The other major planets are all near the sun right now, with one notable exception: mighty Jupiter, which stands at opposition to the sun September 20. This is when it's at its best, rising at sunset, dominating the sky all night, and setting at sunrise. It's a bright light that is hard to miss once it gets very high.
And if you have binoculars or a small telescope, try looking for its 4 large moons. They will be little dots strung out, roughly in a line, near the planet. They may not all be visible when you look; try this handy Java utility from skyandtelescope.com to see what they look like at the time you're observing.
